[name_m]How[/name_m] would you spell it [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f], or [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f]? What’s the most common spelling you’ve seen? I like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f], but think people will constantly spell it [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f].
I would spell it [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f]. The most common spelling I’ve seen is [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f].
I think in the U.S. most people would guess [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] first; I am personally inclined toward [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] as seeming more authentic, but [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] might be easier, at least in the U.S.
[name_m]Hi[/name_m] there.
I personally think that [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] looks the best. It just seems sleeker than the others. I’ve never seen Gwedoline before, & I think that may get pronounced as [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]-do-line instead of [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]-do-lin. I do agree that [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is for sure the most common. That being said, [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]/[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] isn’t that popular of a name anyway. So, normal people (e.g. not name nerds) may not even realize that [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is more common.
By the way, it’s a beautiful name!
[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps.
Definitely [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]. I don´t like it with a y for some reason, and the -line spelling I would pronounce differently. [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is a great name!
[name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is my favourite, but [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is also familiar to me, and I think people would end up spelling it correctly. The only one I wouldn’t use is [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f], as I’m very inclined to pronounce it differently (gwen-doh-line, instead of gwen-doh-lin).
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]: it’s got the traditional Welsh -len ending over the -lyn, which feels trendy and overexposed to me.
Go with the spelling you like.
It is true that here in the U.S. [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] is a more popular spelling. That being said, it is not a very popular name anyways, and from your profile information you are in Australia. I don’t know how popular each spelling is in Australia, but I did look up [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] and [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] on behind the name and neither turned up with a popularity chart with Australia which indicates to me that it is barely used there. If that is the case, it doesn’t matter which spelling you use because that will be the norm to anyone she is introduced to.
I would pronounce [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f] with the -line ending rather than -lyn.
The others are both nice and look great, however here in [name_m]Wales[/name_m] the -yn ending is traditionally used for male names, whereas -en names are feminine. It won’t make a different outside of [name_m]Wales[/name_m] but, may be of some interest for you
I think [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] is the best spelling and feels the most authentic even if not the most popular. lyn endings are particularly popular in the US, so do have an American (and modern) feel about them if you are outside [name_u]America[/name_u].
I agree with what people have said above. I like [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f] best but you might end up with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] default spelling quite a bit. I think the y is still pretty authentic and also looks nice written out. It’s a unique and beautiful name.
[name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f]! I love it. Feels more classic and authentic to me. The last time the name was in the top 100 in Australia was about 60-70 years ago, I think, and the spelling was [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f]. These days I don’t think anyone would favour one spelling over another. The only [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] I know of was spelled [name_f]Gwendolen[/name_f].
Go with the spelling you like. I would go with [name_f]Gwendolyn[/name_f] because I like the “[name_f]Dolly[/name_f]” part of the name.
My mother’s name is [name_f]Gwendolene[/name_f] on her birth certificate. She spelt it [name_f]Gwendoline[/name_f] on official documents.
Mum was always called [name_f]Gwen[/name_f] or [name_f]Gwennie[/name_f]. We are Australians. Most [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]'s I know are about her age (90). Sadly due to dementia, Mum does not respond to any version of her name.
For personal reasons, I totally dislike the name [name_f]Gwendolene[/name_f], and would not recommend it. However, other people might love the name. We are a weird mob when it comes to names.
