This is our first choice name for our baby boy, but we’re a little stuck on the spelling. DH is worried that no one will know how to pronounce it. I just can’t stand when people misspell a name.
Traditional Spelling: [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m]
Mom’s Preference: [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (a slightly difference name, but sounds the same in the USA)
Husband’s Suggestion: Locklin
Definitely go with [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] or [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]! The pronunciation is pretty straight forward so I don’t think the spelling needs to be altered. Locklin looks too made up and almost feminine to me.
I’d spell it [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], which I love! The pronunciation seems pretty straight forward, and I don’t think is too difficult to correct anyway. I thought [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] was the traditional spelling, which is why I prefer it, but I’m not completely sure.
I have seen both [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m], but I’d avoid Locklin. I don’t think you need to worry about pronunciation because this name is being used more and more. Looks like the O-spelling is used slightly more in the US at #938 vs #991 for the A-spelling.
As far as I know the traditional spellings are [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] (in [name_f]Scotland[/name_f] where the name originates) and [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] (in [name_f]Ireland[/name_f]) and both are pronounced ‘[name_m]LOCK[/name_m]-l’n’. Either of these is fine but keep away from that third option, lol.
EDIT:: Upon further Googling, some Scots actually pronounce the ‘a’ in Lachlan, so there it would be more like ‘LACK-l’n’. You probably know all this already, lol.
I’d say [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], because that’s how I would instinctively write it, and I know [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is more popular, however, I think [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] has the sound you want. As PPs have said, Locklin is not a good idea haha.
I would use [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] or [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] but no other spelling. I think most people will be able to pronounce [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] just fine. Handsome name.
I would use [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m], personally, although [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] is nice, as well. I was under the impression that [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] was the traditional spelling. I think [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is great!
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] is fine. It’s not THAT uncommon in the US, most people will have come across it at some point, and the pronunciation itself isn’t all that difficult or counterintuitive.
I much, much prefer the [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] or [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] spellings, personally preferring [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. I would personally avoid Locklin. Honestly it looks like a misspelling to me and a bit feminine.
I prefer [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. I pronounce both [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] and [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] the same, but I guess it depends on where you live. Locklin looks feminine to me, and made up. I go with either [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] or [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. I love the name [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. If it worked in my language, I’d have it on my own list. It is my ultimate GP name for a boy so I’m glad to see it getting some love.
This is my brother’s name- spelled a more traditional Scottish way: Laughlan. In scottish, I believe the ch/ck sound is replaced with a courser, guttural sound, but here in Aussie-land, we pronounce it the same as [name_m]Lachlan[/name_m]. Alternate spelling could be [name_m]Laughlin[/name_m]. I like both of these, the ‘gh’ is a lovely celtic look/sound.
[name_m]Lachlan[/name_m] of [name_m]Lochlan[/name_m] for sure but there will undoubtedly be pronunciation issues [name_f]Do[/name_f] not “make up” a spelling!
