On a boy, [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] seems really dorky and old-man like. I couldn’t see myself using it at all. On a girl, it feels like a rich girls name. I am aware of the Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars association and maybe that’s where the image stems from.
I do really like it and since hearing it and seeing it on another little girl, (at the grocery store) I really feel like it has potential. I have never struck up a relationship with a name so fast. It must mean something.
My question is, is it usable for someone who doesn’t spend their weekends at the country tennis club, and would it sound “we really wanted a boy but got a girl” on a middle class family.
I’m not bothered at all by unisex names, I have sisters [name_m]Archer[/name_m] and [name_u]Phoenix[/name_u]. (younger by 18 years) It wouldn’t stand out or be odd in my family at all.
I hate to say it but I immediately think working class when I picture Spencer on a girl. The only time I’ve met any woman of wealth with a unisex name was if it were her (grand)mother’s maiden name and even then it was usually tucked in the middle.
That being said I am not a fan of Spencer, and especially dislike it on a girl.
I am not usually a huge fan of unisex names on girls, but I am not particularly bothered by them either. I think they can be cute sometimes. While I probably wouldn’t use [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] on a girl, Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars has really warmed me up to the idea of seeing it on a girl. I wouldn’t think twice about meeting a little girl named [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], no matter her socioeconomic background.
I really don’t like it on a girl. I’m not a huge fan of names hoping the gender pond…in this case, [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] is not a unisex name (neither is [name_m]Archer[/name_m], from your example). People just slap it on a child of the opposite gender and call it unisex. Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars has definitely made me warm up to certain names, but I still prefer [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] on a boy. It does scream, to me, “well…wanted a boy, but we aren’t having anymore kids, so we are using it anyway” (which I get from the PLL example too, for some reason).
Thanks for the replies, i’m still really unsure about it. It strays very far from my usual taste in names. Perhaps paired with a really feminine middle. Definitely something to think about.
I actually dislike [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] for a boy – a lot. But I don’t mind it for a girl. I have known a couple girls with the name [name_u]Spencer[/name_u], so I wouldn’t automatically think of Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars. I think it’s a pretty cool name for a girl.
I’m the odd one out here. I really like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] for a boy…not so much for a girl. I actually am a fan of “unisex” names…all three of my girls have them but I can’t seem to get on board with this one. That being said, I’ve never watched Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars so I don’t have the character association with it (I do watch Criminal Minds though…so maybe that’s why I like it for a boy;-))
[name_u]Kelsey[/name_u] Grammar ([name_m]Frasier[/name_m] actor) has a daughter called [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] so I think it works
People could make assumptions about your family based on any name, so if you like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and it wouldnt stick out in your family I say go for it
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] on a girl! I had it in my signature until very recently but I can’t come up with the perfect middle. I am a huge fan of unisex names, so that might be part of it. I adore the name
Well, people have done it. I personally can’t stand the name on a boy or a girl. [name_f]Every[/name_f] [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] I’ve known has not been a very good person, but I disliked the name before I met any of them. Ironically, if I had been a boy my name would have been [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]! So my answer is yes, if you really love it go for it. Again though, I’m not a fan of it as a boys name or a girls name.
I love this name!!! Very cute. I don’t really see either of the scenarios/references that you mentioned. Also don’t pair it with a really feminine middle if you don’t want to.
It seems like I’m one of the few who have this opinion but I think it is really cute for a girl! I know one girl named [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and she is super sweet so maybe I like it because of her. Idk but I actually really like it. [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] doesn’t make me think that you wanted a boy and got a girl. It seems like middle/upper class to me.
I don’t care for it at all. That said, I don’t think rich girl in any way and think it could work on anyone. To me it’s similar to [name_u]Harper[/name_u] and [name_u]Parker[/name_u] which work on anyone from poor to rich. So if you like it go for it! [name_m]Just[/name_m] because it’s not my style or other people’s style doesn’t mean it’s not right for you. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
The problem I have with it, is that its so unexpected of me. My usual taste tends to be more feminine and I suppose “Greek”? [name_f]Lyra[/name_f], [name_f]Olive[/name_f], [name_f]Juno[/name_f], [name_f]Octavia[/name_f], [name_f]Clio[/name_f], [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f]… and then [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]?? Its just really stumped me what makes it so attractive to me. And i’ve got no chance of finding a middle name to go with it.
Any suggestions?
I named my baby girl [name_u]Spencer[/name_u]. It was the only name my husband and I agreed on. It was always [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] for a girl. She’s fits the name perfectly. Her middle name is [name_f]Kayle[/name_f]. Sounds strange but her grandmothers names are [name_f]Gayle[/name_f] and [name_u]Kay[/name_u] and we wanted her to always have a piece of both. We couldn’t be happier with her name.
I knew a little boy named [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] and of course [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] [name_u]Reid[/name_u]!
Original [name_u]Charlie[/name_u]'s [name_u]Angel[/name_u] [name_f]Jaclyn[/name_f] [name_m]Smith[/name_m] named her daughter [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] ( and that was back in the 80’s!)
So I it’s one of the unisex names I do think works for both.
Before I watched Pretty [name_m]Little[/name_m] Liars, someone mentioned it to me and I was like…what? But now I’m watching it, and I love the character and actress, I really like [name_u]Spencer[/name_u] on a girl. You could also use [name_u]Penny[/name_u] as a nickname
