[name]Just[/name] curious if any of you would let hubbys love of sports play a role in the name? Using some type of sport name or something to do with sports as a name. I personally know one boy named Heisman. I actually think it’s pretty cool. If you did or would what would some of the names be?
Heisman–football award
[name]Wilson[/name]–brand of sports equip.
I’m sure guys here try and get their kids named after their favourite footballers. Pretty sure any [name]Chelsea[/name] FC fan would want to call their little girl [name]Chelsea[/name].
I’m fairly certain my husband has proposed every European soccer player name to me over the course of our marriage. I have vetoed [name]Ronaldo[/name], [name]Christiano[/name], Nuno, [name]Luis[/name], [name]Ricardo[/name], etc, etc, etc,
My friend named her son [name]Madden[/name], which was as far as she was willing to go to give a nod to her husband’s sports fanaticism.
If I loved the name on its own merits, I’d be more than happy to allow my husband to believe we used it because of his favourite athlete/equipment manufacturer/franchise/sports announcer. Sure.
I love horseback riding and watching tennis so I would definitely consider using some of my favourite athletes’ names! So I would definitely let my husband do so. But the name of a franchise or equipment manufacturer… I don’t think so. It’d be like naming your child after an object or brand! Mostly because the majority just don’t sound like names. And perhaps a bit like an advertisement.
My husband has mentioned so many on behalf of sports or players. We chose [name]Tate[/name] as a middle name after a college football player but like snacktress said I only used it because I liked it but let hubby believe it was after the player lol!!
My friend’s older sister gave birth to a boy on the day of the Super Bowl this year, and because the Giants won (woo!), she and her husband gave their son the mn [name]Eli[/name] (after [name]Eli[/name] [name]Manning[/name]).
I wouldn’t deliberately name my kid after an athlete (sorry, they’re often cool people but still not the ultimate role models to me), but i can imagine getting turned onto a name that i became aware of through sports.
Hahahahahahaha, I can see my SO doing the same thing once we start talking about considering children. (I don’t get to have a TV on Sundays/ I don’t think I can even walk in front of the TV on Sundays…lol).
I wouldn’t name our child after an athlete in case that athlete turns out to be a pedophile or a dog fighter or something horrible. Naming the child after something associated with the sport seems ok. I live in [name]Canada[/name] and could just a imagine a little boy running around named [name]Stanley[/name] after the [name]Stanley[/name] Cup.
If I were to choose a sports related name it might be after [name]Zinedine[/name] Zidane mainly because I like his name, I’ve mentioned on here my husband likes Ardenne after tte Ardennes Classics because he loves cycling.
My thoughts turn to names like Wrigley or [name]Shea[/name] and I could understand children named after fields/stadiums because in a lot of cases the place is named after a person in the first place. Though this would not by my style and I probably wouldn’t allow it, haha. =]

Though I am definitely not into sports so this would not by my style and I probably wouldn’t allow it unless it was a name I liked to begin with, haha. =]

I know a sibset named [name]Joshua[/name] “[name]Josh[/name]”, [name]Dallas[/name] (g) and [name]Jeter[/name] (b). [name]Jeter[/name] after the ball player and I think [name]Dallas[/name] was after the sports team the DH liked. [name]Josh[/name] got the normal one!
I wouldn’t use a name just for the sports connection, but I’m with others in that if I liked a name and it just happened to connect with a team/etc. a future husband liked I’d go ahead and let him think that’s why we chose it!
A friend recently named her baby girl Mattingly “Mattie” for short…I think it’s unique, pretty, and accessible. I’ve also known a Jacoby which was loosely inspired by the red sox player…I think it’s a great alternative to Jacob.
I don’t really see it as naming the child “after” the person just kind of inspired by. I think a lot of people get some inspiration from someone or something whether it be sports, a family member or anything really. It doesn’t necessarily mean the child was named after the someone or something just that their name was possibly inspired by them…if that makes sense.
A girl in my class is called [name]Marion[/name] [name]Jones[/name].
[name]Don[/name]'t know whether that was deliberate or not but that’s a bad association.
