SSA day thoughts!

[name_m]Just[/name_m] for fun!

The US SSA is releasing the 2023 name data tomorrow at 9 am EST, so make sure to tune in! I’d love to hear any and all of your predictions:

[name_m]New[/name_m] names to the top 10? [name_m]New[/name_m] names to the top 1000? What names will have the biggest jumps? Any pop culture references you think will be especially influential?

And just out of curiosity, what feelings do you have surrounding Name [name_f]Day[/name_f]? Excitement? Nervousness? Dread?

I’m hoping Luna won’t rise, so i guess I’m dreading it. This is actually my first Name Day, so lets see how that goes lol.

Predictions:
I think Audrey might make it in the top 10. It seems like every little girl I see is Audrey these days! Of course I’m not an expert, so that’s just my two cents.

Edit: About pop culture, I think maybe Taylor might get some attention

I’m incredibly excited, but I’ll also be a bit sad if several of my favorites rise significantly.

For boys, I think Levi is going to rise – maybe even top ten? Michael and Alexander will continue to fall. Lucas might fall. “Nick Cannon” boy names will also make a leap. Particularly Chosen, Golden and Zen. Brayden, Aiden, Jayden, Caden and their ilk will also lower. Truett, Rhodes, and Wilder will rise.

For girls, Luna will move higher into the Top Ten. Eleanor and Mila will also rise. Ava will fall one place. Harper will fall. Wrenley/Wrenly will breach the Top 500. Elowen and Maeve will rise. The “-Addison” names will fall. 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s darlings will fall, especially Lauren, Jennifer, and Megan.

As a wildcard guess, I think we will also see an increase in the names of Chiefs players’ baby names, especially Patrick Mahomes and Jason Kelce (Bronze, Wyatt for a girl, etc.).

I’m sure that I am dead wrong about most or all of these, but it was fun to guess!

I love Ava and Isla for girls. Henry for a boy . Curious about Isla :eyes: Ava and Henry should stay about the same.

Looking to see how Flora, Wren, Ophelia names like that fare along with meadow , juniper and Opal

For boys I’m looking at Otis, Cyrus, wilder, indigo names like that.

I’m very excited :purple_heart::tulip::blossom:

Will be fun to see :beetle:

I think juniper, Elowen for girls will rise a lot

For boys wilder, Cash , Hayes :tulip:🪼 :beetle:

I’m excited!

Assorted predictions:

[name_m]New[/name_m] to the top 10: maybe [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], but I’m not sure what it will replace? I also think [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] might kick [name_f]Emma[/name_f] out of #2.

Predicting rises for Luca/Luka, [name_m]Leo[/name_m], Miles/Myles, [name_m]Beau[/name_m], [name_f]Mila[/name_f], [name_f]Ivy[/name_f], and [name_f]Athena[/name_f].

[name_m]New[/name_m] to the top 100: [name_m]August[/name_m], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Juniper[/name_f], maybe [name_m]Enzo[/name_m]

Out of the top 100: [name_f]Everleigh[/name_f], [name_f]Serenity[/name_f], [name_m]Jordan[/name_m], maybe [name_m]Nicholas[/name_m] but I feel like it could go either way

[name_m]New[/name_m] to the top 1000: [name_f]Tallulah[/name_f], [name_f]Wren[/name_f] (b)

Influential pop culture references: [name_f]Esti[/name_f], [name_m]Bennett[/name_m] (g), [name_m]Rome[/name_m] (g), [name_m]Leodis[/name_m], [name_f]Louetta[/name_f], [name_f]Barbie[/name_f], [name_m]Kelce[/name_m], Cillian/Killian/Kylian, [name_f]Morgan[/name_f] (b), [name_f]Carmy[/name_f] (b)

I can see [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Willow[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Luna[/name_f], [name_f]Juniper[/name_f] and [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] moving up the charts - and maybe some more of the vintage but contemporary nickname style names - [name_f]Sunny[/name_f], [name_f]Indie[/name_f], [name_m]Charlie[/name_m], [name_m]Archie[/name_m], [name_m]Albie[/name_m], [name_f]Stevie[/name_f], [name_f]Frankie[/name_f], [name_m]Tommy[/name_m] etc.

I wonder if the Oppenheimer + [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] weekend will have influenced anyone - maybe actors/creator names along with the characters - Cillian/Killian/Murphy, [name_f]Margot[/name_f], [name_m]Ken[/name_m], [name_f]Greta[/name_f], [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_f]Sasha[/name_f], [name_f]Barbie[/name_f] (for the brave )

My predictions:

Names that will have gone up: (based on pop culture and people’s name choices on Nameberry)
Margot
Elowen
Juliet
Hugo
Barbie
Oliver
Indigo
Lyra
Pippa
Esti
Maxine

Names that will have gone down, or continued to fall:
Liam
all Ken names
Cove
Karen
Jackson and variants
Kayden and variants
Brandon
Donald
Joseph

It would be cool if Cassiopeia, Paloma, and Lunette went up because I would like those to be seen as more usable.

I hope that Leona, Estelle, Leo, Damian, Julian, Aria, Cleo, June, and Valeria did not go up very much because those are some of my more familiar favorite names, I don’t want them to become really common.

[name_f]Susanna[/name_f] is currently not in the top 1,000. I suspect that by tomorrow that will have changed. I’m a little sad about it, but it is also a gorgeous name that I think deserves more love. It’s that weird dichotomy between feeling protective of a name while also wishing more people appreciated it.

Other than that, I am very excited! I love comparing the new list to the previous year!

Are you able to link it? I’ve tried searching and all I can find is their list from last year!

I don’t think it comes out until tomorrow!

As far as the top names, I think [name_m]Mateo[/name_m] might replace [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] in the top 10 this year for boys. For girls, I think [name_f]Ava[/name_f] is going to keep falling and [name_f]Luna[/name_f] will keep rising.

For overarching trends, I think -ley and -lyn names for girls will continue to get less popular, as will -er names for boys. On the other hand, I think -s and -o ending names for boys will continue to rise.

I also think we’ll see a number of vintage names re-enter the top 1000. Obviously not all of these, but my guesses are some combination of [name_f]Agnes[/name_f], [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f], [name_f]Betty[/name_f], [name_m]Casper[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_f]Ines[/name_f], [name_f]Enid[/name_f], [name_f]Etta[/name_f], [name_m]Freddie[/name_m], and [name_m]Percy[/name_m] for a mix of having vintage vibes, trendy sounds, already being popular in the UK, and/or having pop culture references from the past few years.

I also agree with the many mentions of [name_f]Margot[/name_f] growing in popularity.

[name_f]My[/name_f] guess is that [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] will have jumped even higher! (Sorry to all those who love it).

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] in the top ten.

I picked through data from previous years and am predicting…

[name_f]Emma[/name_f] (2nd) & [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] (3rd) could switch. [name_f]Evelyn[/name_f] will fall out of top 10. [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] and [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] will rise. [name_f]Olivia[/name_f] will stay #1.

I think [name_m]Noah[/name_m] has a good shot of usurping [name_m]Liam[/name_m] for #1. [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] will both climb 1-2 places. [name_m]Leo[/name_m] will break the top 20.

For girls -
[name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Violet[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Lila[/name_f], [name_f]Freya[/name_f], [name_f]Margo[/name_f], [name_f]Wren[/name_f], [name_f]Athena[/name_f], [name_f]Maeve[/name_f], [name_f]Sienna[/name_f], [name_f]Emily[/name_f], [name_f]Hallie[/name_f], [name_m]Oakley[/name_m], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] and [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] will move up. [name_f]Chloe[/name_f], [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], and [name_f]Mia[/name_f] will hold their places give or take one position.

Big winners for girls will be [name_f]Mila[/name_f] & [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f].

falling will be: [name_f]Abigail[/name_f], [name_f]Piper[/name_f], [name_f]Aubrey[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], [name_f]Ella[/name_f], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f], [name_f]Adalynn[/name_f], [name_f]Arianna[/name_f], [name_f]Peyton[/name_f], [name_f]Savannah[/name_f], [name_f]Everly[/name_f], [name_f]Madeline[/name_f], [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Avery[/name_f], [name_f]Layla[/name_f], [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]

For boys -
[name_m]Tate[/name_m], [name_m]Arlo[/name_m], [name_m]Walker[/name_m], [name_m]Mateo[/name_m], [name_m]Theo[/name_m], [name_m]Sebastian[/name_m], [name_m]Knox[/name_m], [name_m]Zaire[/name_m], [name_m]Emmanuel[/name_m], [name_m]Dawson[/name_m], [name_m]Leon[/name_m], [name_m]Micah[/name_m], [name_m]Wesley[/name_m], [name_m]Cooper[/name_m], [name_m]Archer[/name_m], [name_m]Luca[/name_m], [name_m]Kai[/name_m], [name_m]Rowan[/name_m], [name_m]Roman[/name_m] will rise. [name_m]Henry[/name_m], [name_m]Elijah[/name_m] and [name_m]James[/name_m] will hold steady in the middle top 10.

Big winners for boys will be [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] and [name_m]Leo[/name_m].

[name_m]Mason[/name_m], [name_m]Jayden[/name_m], [name_m]Carter[/name_m], [name_m]Jacob[/name_m], [name_m]Wyatt[/name_m], Jackson/Jaxon, [name_m]Grayson[/name_m], [name_m]Logan[/name_m], [name_m]Landon[/name_m], [name_m]Hunter[/name_m], [name_m]Austin[/name_m], [name_m]Colton[/name_m] will fall.

[name_f]Penelope[/name_f] will definitely go up but probably not enough to hit top 10 yet. [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] might also get close. [name_f]Lucy[/name_f] [name_m]Grey[/name_m] from Songbirds and Snakes might give [name_f]Lucy[/name_f], [name_m]Grey[/name_m], or double barrel names a boost.

I just have to second this because I really want to consider this name in the future but it’s starting to feel so trendy to me!! [name_m]Even[/name_m] though I haven’t met or heard through social circles any little girls called [name_f]Luna[/name_f]. I still think it will continue to rise :frowning:

well without knowing what is actually trending and declining at the moment, these are my guesses just from the current top 20’s:

trending/rising girls:

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Amelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Mia[/name_f]
[name_f]Evelyn[/name_f]
[name_f]Luna[/name_f]
[name_f]Harper[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlett[/name_f]
[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f]

I’m predicting [name_f]Isabella[/name_f], [name_f]Ava[/name_f], and [name_f]Sophia[/name_f] may decline possibly because they’ve reached their peak and have been heard so often for awhile now

trending boys:

[name_m]Noah[/name_m] (I think this will rise to #1 for boys and that Noah/Noa for girls will rise also)
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m]
[name_m]James[/name_m]
[name_m]Elijah[/name_m]
[name_m]Henry[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m] (and Luca)
[name_m]Theodore[/name_m]
[name_m]Mateo[/name_m]
[name_m]Levi[/name_m]
[name_m]Sebastian[/name_m]
[name_m]Leo[/name_m] (#22 but I think this will continue to rise quickly, much to my dismay!)

I feel the names [name_m]Daniel[/name_m], [name_m]Michael[/name_m], [name_m]Jack[/name_m], [name_m]Owen[/name_m] and [name_m]Asher[/name_m] are sort of past their peaks now and may start to decline

Yeah… I don’t even know any Leos, but somehow this name is becoming super popular now… at this rate it’ll be overused and falling by the time I can have a son :sob:

I know! this is why I’ve turned to [name_m]Leonardo[/name_m] and also why I am considering [name_m]Gio[/name_m] and [name_m]Rio[/name_m] as less popular alternatives - but still really want to use [name_m]Leo[/name_m] :frowning:
