Star Names?

I’m thinking names that more just remind one of the night sky/stars in general, rather than specific stars. I had a very special tie to the stars when I was younger, and I still get nostalgic looking up at them. I still love the stars, and would love to point out constellations to my children in the future, etc. I thought it might be fun to include at least one name on my list that sort of embodies the stars, how they twinkle in the night sky and shine. Plus, it might be fun to do a [name_f]Starry[/name_f] [name_m]Night[/name_m]-type nursery? I’m a bit cheesy that way.

I have been thinking about [name_f]Cosima[/name_f], which just sort of reminds me of the cosmos in general, but is there anything else I’m missing? As fun as single star names, like [name_f]Bellatrix[/name_f], are, I was sort of hoping to avoid those and go for something more focused on the night sky/stars in general.

Thanks, ladies!

Here are a few ideas that have star-related meanings.

[name_f]Astra[/name_f]
[name_f]Astrid[/name_f] (doesn’t actually mean “star”, but it’s similar enough to names that do, so it makes me think of stars!)
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]
[name_f]Danica[/name_f]
[name_f]Estella[/name_f]
[name_f]Estelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Esther[/name_f]
[name_f]Hester[/name_f]
Maristela
[name_f]Sidra[/name_f]
[name_f]Stella[/name_f]
[name_f]Zona[/name_f]

Beautiful backstory, [name_u]Ash[/name_u]!.

Izarra - Basque for star
[name_f]Esther[/name_f] - Persian for star. And all the [name_f]Esther[/name_f] variants therefore, including [name_f]Hester[/name_f], Estée, [name_f]Eszter[/name_f], [name_f]Esti[/name_f], etc.
[name_f]Twila[/name_f] (and [name_f]Twyla[/name_f]) - Thought to be derived from étoile, [name_m]French[/name_m] for star.
Wynstelle - I’ve seen this listed as a name derived from the Welsh fair/pure “wyn” and the Latin [name_f]Stella[/name_f], meaning star.

[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] and [name_f]Danica[/name_f] both refer to specifically the morning star, which is maybe not what you’re looking for? And [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] to the evening star, but also to evening prayer, creating an interesting double meaning for your situation perhaps?

I hope this wasn’t too annoying a post.

Wow, I had the same kind of nostalgia the other night when I was out with my dog before bed, in the silent chill of the autumn night watching the stars twinkle and planes fly over. I, too, tried to translate that feeling into a name, and thought about [name_f]Nova[/name_f], or [name_m]Midnight[/name_m] as a middle name. I hadn’t even thought of [name_f]Cosima[/name_f]. The only other name I can think of is [name_u]Vega[/name_u], which is a star. Oh, and [name_u]Seren[/name_u] is welsh for star.

Oh, [name_f]Roxana[/name_f] is also sometimes said to mean “little star” though it’s other meaning is “dawn.” I really love [name_f]Roxana[/name_f]/Ruxandra/Roxelana but I know it’s not everyone’s taste.

I am fan of stars as well, I’ve be obsessed for some time now
Other names that give of this sort of image in my mind are:
[name_f]Diana[/name_f]
[name_f]Selena[/name_f]/[name_f]Selene[/name_f]
[name_f]Celine[/name_f]/[name_f]Celina[/name_f]
[name_f]Celeste[/name_f]/[name_f]Celestia[/name_f]
[name_f]Angeline[/name_f]/[name_f]Evangeline[/name_f] - [name_m]Just[/name_m] because they kind of remind of the [name_u]Blue[/name_u] [name_f]Fairy[/name_f] from Pinocchio, like an angel coming down to earth via a star.
[name_f]Elena[/name_f] - Kind of reminds of that moment when you look at the night sky and you see this beautiful star winking at you. [name_m]Just[/name_m] so bright and you feel as though you can reach out and touch it!
[name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] - I once read this passage in a novel called Tinkers, ‘Next fell the stars, tinkling about him like ornaments of heaven shaken loose. Finally, the black vastation itself came untacked…’ I thought it was beautiful imagery and I feel like [name_f]Mazarine[/name_f] kind of fits that.

[name_f]Cosima[/name_f] is so ravishing, I have such a deep and profound love for it.

[name_f]Asta[/name_f] (“star-like”)
[name_f]Astraea[/name_f]/Astraia (“star-maiden”)
[name_f]Citlali[/name_f] (“star”)
Hesper (“evening star”)
[name_f]Hester[/name_f] (“star”)
[name_f]Nova[/name_f] (a star that suddenly becomes extraordinarily bright following an explosion at its surface)
[name_u]Seren[/name_u] (“star”)
Seshat/Sesheta (Egyptian goddess of astronomy and astrology among other things)
[name_f]Vespera[/name_f] (“evening star”)

[name_f]Larissa[/name_f] - [name_u]Seren[/name_u]! Oh, goodness, I don’t know how I missed that. I really like it, but I’m not sure how I would fit it on my list. I’m not sure I can see me easily fitting it into any of my combos. Hmm.

@stripedsocks - I actually sort of like Roxelana. I had planned on using it in a story, when I was really crushing on [name_f]Lana[/name_f]/[name_f]Lanna/name_f. I’m not sure I would use it anymore, though. I do love the suggestions of [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] and [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], though. I’ve always really liked both. What’s the story behind [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]? I feel like I’ve heard that there’s a story behind the Hebrew [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f], and I even think someone’s told me before, but I’ve forgotten what it is. I even rather like the idea of [name_f]Etoile[/name_f]. And annoying? What about your post could have possibly been annoying? I liked like… three of your ideas, haha.

[name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] (eye-yell-it) literally means “gazelle” (sometimes translated as “deer”) but is taken from the Hebrew expression [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] HaShahar which means “gazelle of dawn” and is a reference to the morning star.

I’m not sure which whole story you’re remembering, it’s got a fairly lush/multi-faceted amount of story and weight to it, spiritually, but I found this passage and I thought it was kinda neat:

The ayelet – the female gazelle or deer, whose name is also given to the morning star, ayelet ha-shachar (“gazelle of the dawn”) – is the subject of several biblical verses and midrashic legends. Some of them are so strange in their imagery that they seem to have come from much more ancient myths. The authors of the Zohar, immersed in the words of the Torah and Midrash, weave together strands from these earlier texts and accentuate their strangeness and their mythic dimension. In the Zohar the gazelle who is described in such emotional and human-like terms is Malkhut. She is also called the Glory (Kavod) of God, and to Her are applied verses from “Eshet Chayil”, a passage from Proverbs in praise of a capable woman, which is traditionally sung at the table on Friday night in praise of both the woman of the house and the Shekhinah.

[…]
As the verse from Psalm 42 suggests – “like a gazelle, as she moans for streams of water, so my soul moans for you, G-d” – this is also a story about the soul, about each one of us. It is a story that lends itself to visualization or guided meditation. The meanings of the story – for example, where the gazelle’s journey takes her and what the powers are that she encounters – are not clear, and the commentators disagree. But her strength, compassion and courage shine through very clearly.

It makes, I think, an interesting choice for a girl. However, the pronunciation confuses people and I’ve occasionally seen suggestions to spell it Iyelet? I don’t know if that actually clears anything up though, lol.

My first thought, even though it doesn’t have a star based meaning, was [name_f]Luna[/name_f] (meaning moon.) It reminds me of the song [name_u]Clair[/name_u] de [name_f]Lune[/name_f] and I love it. I will search for some others tonight.

[name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps a little!

I looked up constellations, and found the following names.

[name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f]
[name_f]Ursula[/name_f] ([name_f]Ursa[/name_f] major)
[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]
[name_f]Aquila[/name_f]
[name_f]Leontine[/name_f], [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] ([name_m]Leo[/name_m])
Auriga

Evren, unisex meaning cosmos in Turkish.
[name_f]Nyx[/name_f] is night in Greek.
[name_m]Izar[/name_m] is star in basque

All the others I thought of have been mentioned already.

What a beautiful idea, having little star-babies, sleeping in a constellation-covered room. It sounds like something that they could pass on to their babies too.

When I was younger, I saw an art exhibition called “A Girl Called [name_f]Novella[/name_f]” and it was about a girl who was constantly dreaming of the stars, and space and far away galaxies, so I always associated “[name_f]Novella[/name_f]” with space, instead of it’s “book, literary work” meaning

Other than that… Maybe something like:
-"[name_f]Yvaine[/name_f]"- the name of the fallen star from [name_u]Neil[/name_u] Gaimon’s “Stardust”,
-"[name_f]Nebula[/name_f]"- a bit out-there, it’s the name of a character from the DC comic “Guardians of the [name_f]Galaxy[/name_f]”
-"[name_f]Lyra[/name_f]"- the name of a star, also the name of the main character from the [name_u]Golden[/name_u] Compass series which has all sorts of plot-points involving stars/stardust
-"[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]" or “[name_f]Summer[/name_f]”- after our own beautiful star!
-"[name_f]Aster[/name_f]" or “Astor” - a star-shaped flower
-"[name_f]Callista[/name_f]"-one of jupiters moons (There are actually lots of pretty moon names- [name_f]Elara[/name_f], Helike, Cyllene, [name_f]Rhea[/name_f], [name_u]Dione[/name_u], [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f], [name_f]Helene[/name_f], [name_f]Pandora[/name_f], [name_u]Calypso[/name_u], Pallene, [name_f]Io[/name_f], [name_u]Ariel[/name_u], [name_f]Miranda[/name_f]… Etc)

Then, there are all of the names that mean “[name_u]Bright[/name_u]”- [name_f]Claire[/name_f] ([name_f]Claire[/name_f] [name_f]Luna[/name_f] would be cute! Hehe), [name_f]Electra[/name_f], [name_f]Kallie[/name_f], [name_f]Lainey[/name_f], [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]…

Then there are names from the various space/SciFi shows and movies- [name_f]Leia[/name_f], [name_f]Kaylee[/name_f], [name_f]Serenity[/name_f], Nyota, [name_f]Zoe[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f] etc…

I think that basic “[name_f]Star[/name_f]” works as a name too, though that might be too straight forward for what you mean.

So many other people had lovely suggestions

@cimorhinelea - I quite love [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] and [name_f]Clara[/name_f], but they don’t really hold any ties to stars for me. Something like [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Esther[/name_f] “bright star” could be lovely, but I don’t really have a “star” feel to them for me. I quite love [name_f]Calista[/name_f] and [name_f]Io[/name_f], but I don’t think I’d go for them–I think of [name_m]Jupiter[/name_m] and planets and moons above the stars. I find astronomy to be a terribly intriguing field, but the stars are my true interest and love.

I’ve started playing around with some combos–thoughts on these?

[name_f]Eleni[/name_f] [name_f]Cosima[/name_f] [third middle]
[name_f]Lilia[/name_f] [name_u]Seren[/name_u]
[name_f]Tess[/name_f] [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]
[name_f]Hannah[/name_f] [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]
[name_f]Eva[/name_f] [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f]

I’ve also been thinking about my old [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] combo, [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Ayelet[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f], but I don’t think I could give it up for [name_f]Isabelle[/name_f] [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]. I always seem to go back and forth between the two, but I’ve been pretty set on [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] for a while now…

One of my favorite star names is [name_u]Hoku[/name_u], a Hawaiian name meaning “star”.

We are naming our daughter [name_f]Nova[/name_f], I don’t think I saw this one listed yet…
