I’ve been a Trekkie ever since I was seven or eight. I’ve watched each series (except for [name]Enterprise[/name], the last one) multiple times, and it’s by far my favorite fictional universe. With the movie Into Darkness hitting theaters this weekend (I saw it- loved it), it has got me thinking about [name]Star[/name] Trek character names on real kids.
I actually knew a kid named Spock (No joke). He loathed his name, and went by his middle [name]Alexander[/name] upon transferring schools. I don’t want something that obvious. (It’s totally going to be used for a pet, though. It sounds silly [name]IRL[/name].)
[name]Kathryn[/name], [name]William[/name] and [name]James[/name] are probably most usable ([name]Kathryn[/name] Janeway, [name]William[/name] T. [name]Ryker[/name] and [name]James[/name] [name]Tiberius[/name] [name]Kirk[/name], respectively), and I can definitely see myself using [name]Kira[/name] ([name]Major[/name] [name]Kira[/name] [name]Neryss[/name] of DS9), but here are some of the more ‘out there’ ones.
Opinions?
Boys:
[name]Kirk[/name]- Too much? I love the sound, the meaning, and the connection, but it’s almost as bad as Spock.
[name]Dax[/name] (From Deep Space Nine- not my favorite series by far but great names)
[name]Tiberius[/name]- Nickname Rius.
[name]Remus[/name]
[name]Gordan[/name] nickname [name]Gordi[/name] (said Jor-dee)
[name]McCoy[/name]- nickname [name]Mick[/name]
[name]Troi[/name]/[name]Troy[/name]
Girls:
Jadzia- (23 girls were named this last year… Guess I’m not the only fan- or maybe some people thought they made it up?)
[name]Ezri[/name]- (39 girls were named [name]Ezri[/name].)
[name]Annika[/name]- [name]Seven[/name] of Nine’s human name. Another useable possibility.
[name]Kess[/name]- [name]One[/name] of my favorite names. Possibly a nickname for [name]Kathryn[/name]?
As a fellow Trekkie, I can tell you that this has been a passing thought as well. [name]Star[/name] Trek Into Darkness was great, love it as well!
Oh dear, a boy named Spock??? Poor boy!
Girls:
Jadzia- It sounds cool, it might makes a cool middle name.
[name]Ezri[/name]- Same as Jadzia.
[name]Annika[/name]- Very usable; I know two Annikas.
[name]Kess[/name]- I love [name]Kess[/name], especially as a nickname for Kestrel, but [name]Kathryn[/name] isn’t too far off as well.
[name]Kirk[/name]- I remember one of my very first early combos has [name]Kirk[/name] in the middle slot just because of [name]Kirk[/name] himself I think it’s great for a middle name, but as a first, not too bad; I know a [name]Kirk[/name] and he doesn’t get made fun of or anything.
[name]Dax[/name] - Cool name, but I rather it be a nickname for a longer name.
[name]Tiberius[/name]- Middle name! [name]Tiberius[/name] is one heck of a name for a little boy to carry!
[name]Remus[/name] - Cute, cute! I like this!
[name]Gordan[/name] nickname [name]Gordi[/name] (said Jor-dee) - I like the character, but to me, the name is forever tied to the character.
[name]McCoy[/name]- nickname [name]Mick[/name] - I like this for a middle name; I also find his first name, [name]Leonard[/name], quite refreshing as well.
[name]Troi[/name]/[name]Troy[/name] - I know a girl named [name]Troy[/name], and since the character herself is female, I feel like this would be better for a girl.
Another boy name I think is very usable is [name]Montgomery[/name], as in [name]Scotty[/name] from the Original Series.
I adore [name]Kirk[/name] for a boy. [name]Kirk[/name] was always my favorite captain, but I think it’s a great name on its own, even for a non-Trekkie. But I think I’d only use it as a middle name; I wouldn’t want my son to deal with [name]Star[/name] Trek jokes for the rest of his life!
My sister has [name]Tiberius[/name] earmarked for a boy’s MN partly because of [name]Kirk[/name].
I like [name]Benjamin[/name] (Sisko being my favourite captain) but I can’t use it. [name]Love[/name] the name though.
Jadzia is a real name, in Polish, (or another Eastern European language, sorry!) I think. Probably there are 20-some-odd people a year who would use it despite the Trek connotations? And I think its said differently if its Polish.
Girls
[name]Kira[/name] - I like its Russian meaning anyway but it’s also a favourite character of mine.
Nyota - Not brave enough to use but like the name. This was Lt. Uhura’s little-used first name.
[name]Ro[/name] - I loved [name]Ro[/name], but [name]Ro[/name] is more nickname-y sounding to me. Would need to be short for something in real life, I think.
[name]Minuet[/name] - Riker’s perfect woman, a hologram. I liked the name. Weird episode though.
Boys
[name]Miles[/name] - I loved Chief O’[name]Brien[/name] and it’s a highly usable name.
[name]Julian[/name]
Garak - Not very usable. But a character I liked.
[name]Malcolm[/name] - From [name]Enterprise[/name], a show I didn’t like much, but liked the name. I like the Firefly association as much as the [name]Enterprise[/name] one though.
[name]Jean[/name]-[name]Luc[/name] - wouldn’t really use but a cool name.
[name]Lafayette[/name] - Sisko’s middle name. Probably best kept as a middle name.
I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Star[/name] Trek, but I’m really only a TOS fan {I’ve only seen TOS, and about five episodes of TNG and I tried to watch Voyager/[name]Enterprise[/name] but I just really didn’t like them much}.
I think [name]Kirk[/name] works! I don’t think it’s too attached to [name]Star[/name] Trek, unlike Spock. [name]Just[/name] as long as you don’t name him [name]James[/name] [name]Tiberius[/name] [name]Kirk[/name]
I love [name]Montgomery[/name] with the nickname [name]Monty[/name] {a la [name]Montgomery[/name] [name]Scott[/name]} and also [name]Leonard[/name] {Bones}, which could be updated with [name]Leonardo[/name] or just [name]Leo[/name].
For girls, I like [name]Ilia[/name] {from The Motion Picture} pron. eye-[name]LEE[/name]-uh, and I think Nyota is really pretty although I’m not sure if it’s usable or not…
I actually know a boy named [name]Kirk[/name], although I’m pretty sure he was named in honor of his mother’s maiden name. It works, but I do agree it works better as a middle name. (Fellow Trekkie here. Been watching my whole life!)
[name]Dax[/name] - This is a legit name, I believe. I wouldn’t bat an eye if I met a [name]Dax[/name].
[name]Tiberius[/name] - [name]LOVE[/name]! Might add it to my own list.
[name]Remus[/name] - A little out there. Not my fave.
[name]Gordan[/name] nickname [name]Gordi[/name] - The nickname is a bit of stretch here. With so many other great ST names to choose from, this one is at the bottom of the list.
[name]McCoy[/name]- nickname [name]Mick[/name] - LOVING it! Goes right along with surname-name trend. I think this would be a fabulous choice!
[name]Troi[/name]/[name]Troy[/name] - Also a legit name. I know a few guys named [name]Troy[/name]. (But I would use the [name]Troy[/name] spelling.)
The only girls names I really like are [name]Annika[/name] (fabulous) and [name]Kess[/name]. Does she spell it [name]Kess[/name] or Kes?
Kes I think it was. I’m a Voyager and DS9 girl. Grew up watching both of them I actually met [name]Jennifer[/name] Lien (who played Kes) a few years ago
I saw Into Darkness the other day. I was a little disappointed. The script didn’t feel as snappy as the first one
I am a huge [name]Star[/name] Trek fan. That said, I don’t think I would go w/ any of the really obvious [name]Star[/name] Trek names. There are names like [name]Jake[/name], [name]Julian[/name], [name]Alexander[/name], [name]Miles[/name], [name]Kira[/name], and even Kes that you could use and nobody would automatically think “[name]Star[/name] Trek!” So not like naming your baby Spock. Though I do really like the name Sarek… I also like the names of characters that happen to be actual human names or that sound close enough that you could use them. For instance, I don’t know that I would use Jadzia or [name]Ezri[/name], but they are both legitimate names. Nobody would necessarily know that you meant Trill [name]Ezri[/name] vs. Hebrew [name]Ezri[/name], or Trill Jadzia vs Polish Jadzia.
I also like:
Finna (this is a very minor character who appears in one episode of DS9, love interest of Sisko)
Nadele (I think this was possibly the other name of the same character, who was actually two people or something.)
Ziyal (maybe too associated w. the character, but it is a legitimate human person name- a male Hebrew name, I think.)
Out of all of these, I am most likely to use Finna. I love it and I don’t think it’s that odd due to the popularity of [name]Finn[/name]/[name]Finnegan[/name]/et al. Also, my parents got my name off of a Creature Feature and it hasn’t done me any lasting harm.
Ooh, I am currently watching Voyager (boyfriend´s attempt to make me a Trekkie) and it´s made me really like Janeway as a name (I know it´s her surname, but I really like the sound of it for a first) but that´s definitely unusable though! [name]Katherine[/name] nn Kes could be two awesome Voyager females in one though
I only am a fan of the original series, so I’m not familiar with some of the character names listed above. My daughter came home from college years ago and, in passing, mentioned something about a girl named T’Pring. I said, stop right there. There is a girl at your school with T’Pring for a name? OMG…right out of [name]Star[/name] Trek I said. My daughter had no idea what I was talking about, so I dug out an old video tape I had of the episode where Spock goes crazy and has to go back to [name]Vulcan[/name] to be married to…T’Pring. I think it’s a great name for a Siamese cat, but not a real person. Her parents must have been serious Trekies or just hippies.
