👑 stephanie nicknames

Hi berries,

I keep musing on alternative/stretchy nns for Stephanie and posting little polls in the poll thread but decided to make her her own post here and gather all my/your thoughts.

I know she’s not terribly trendy right now and might even be permanently stuck in the 80s/90s, but bear with me. You don’t have to like the full name or even any of the nicknames to help me out with this.

It’s also important to note that I love stretchy nicknames. I am not asking ‘are these intuitive’ because obviously Steph is the most intuitive and it’s right there. I am trying to :sparkles: expand the nickname horizons :sparkles: and find something with a little more vintagey pizzazz (think Betty for Elizabeth or Fizz for Felicity).

In that spirit, let’s get into it!

Question 1: which stretchy nicknames make (even a little bit of) sense?
I want to know whether, if you met someone called [nickname] and then found out their full name was Stephanie, you’d think ‘oh that’s cool/interesting/clever’ or ‘ah yes I can see how you got there’.

(intentionally ignoring boring Steph, Stephie/Stephy, retro Stevie, and unattractive Fanny for now)

Choose all that apply:

  • Ess/Essie
  • Effie
  • Fifi
  • Ness/Nessie
  • Tess/Tessie
  • Stess
  • Annie
  • Nina
  • Stella
  • Etta/Ettie
  • Nettie

Question 2: if you had to pick just 1 nickname from this list that you like best or think is cleverest, what would it be? (If those are two different answers please give more detail below)

  • Ess/Essie
  • Effie
  • Fifi
  • Ness/Nessie
  • Tess/Tessie
  • Stess
  • Annie
  • Nina
  • Stella
  • Etta/Ettie
  • Nettie

Question 3: if you DO like Stephanie, what do you like about it? And if you DON’T like it, what don’t you like?

I love the meaning (‘crowned’) and that she has historically been used for royalty and aristocracy going back hundreds of years. It feels like she should sit with the Louisas, Josephines, and Eleanors of the world but somehow she has not made it into those classic echelons but instead landed as a 90s cheerleader/dated millennial. I sometimes think if only Jane Austen had named a character Stephanie she would have had more staying power! Do you agree/disagree? Do you have different associations?

Question 4: do any of these nicknames change your view on Stephanie as a name? If you didn’t like it, do you like it better now? Do fun nickname options help to bring her into the 21st century?

This is my name and whilst I like it in full I don’t think ‘Steph’ suits me at allll and just want to make it more my own :two_hearts:

Bonus poll: Ness was the frontrunner when I made a poll recently and I really like her, but I also have a close friend named Ess (not short for Stephanie)! Does that make it unusable?

  • it’s fine
  • it’s unusable
  • I have more to say (please comment below)

Thanks in advance, all :heart_hands:t2::crown:

I like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] because of the meaning, but also it looks really pretty written down and the sound is nice as well! I agree with you that it’s stylistically similar to names like [name_f]Louisa[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] and [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f], even though it’s seen as far more dated than those.

[name_f][/name_f]

I think the fun nicknames make it seem less dated! [name_f]My[/name_f] favorites were the ones I voted for, I think [name_f]Annie[/name_f] is the most intuitive but [name_f]Tess[/name_f] is perhaps my favorite.

I feel fairly neutral about [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], so to answer q3:

[name_f][/name_f]

What i like about [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  • melodic sound (like [name_f]Melanie[/name_f], [name_f]Melody[/name_f], [name_f]Elodie[/name_f], Amelie)
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • but it equally has strength and solidity
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • that eff sound appeals in thag way [name_f][/name_f]- gentle but study
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • nice meaning
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • nn [name_f]Stephie[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Sephy[/name_f]
  • [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

What i dislike about it:

[name_f][/name_f]
    [name_f][/name_f]
  • slightly dated, but not in a “thats unexpected now” way like [name_f]Beverly[/name_f], [name_m]Whitney[/name_m] or [name_f]Jocelyn[/name_f], more like [name_f]Samantha[/name_f], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], and [name_f]Ashley[/name_f] but also [name_f]Tracey[/name_f], [name_f]Deborah[/name_f], Kelly

  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • I dislike [name_m]Stephen[/name_m] and [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] wouldnt be my choice either
  • [name_f][/name_f]
  • there’s a way of saying it that makes it feel harsh
  • [name_f][/name_f]
[name_f][/name_f]

I like [name_f]Effie[/name_f], [name_f]Stella[/name_f], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Nessie[/name_f], [name_f]Nina[/name_f] and [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] (i knew an elizabeth called [name_f]Nettie[/name_f] so why not)

[name_f][/name_f]

I dont know if I could say the nicknames change my view on the name, but they would still please me if i encountered them [name_f][/name_f]- i guess it could make me reconsider the name but ultimately, i would be excited by the nickname usage as a concept
[name_f][/name_f][name_m]Not[/name_m] sure if that makes sense, but i met an [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] “Bea” and [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “May” and while i dont [name_f][/name_f] feel super differently about the longer names, i love the stretch of it??

[name_f][/name_f]

Well that’s deeply exciting! [name_f]Love[/name_f] it!

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

Yeah, I guess this is the feeling I’m circling around, that if it has to be in the same camp as [name_f]Jessica[/name_f] and [name_f]Ashley[/name_f] :smiling_face_with_tear:[name_f][/name_f] maybe I can at least have a bit of fun with the nn? the stretch of it all?!

This is my name and I’ve wondered the same things.

I think Essie, Effie, Tess, Annie, or Nina work best. My favorites are Tess, Effie, and Nina.

Eta: I’ve also heard the nns Stesha and Tippi

[name_f]So[/name_f] interesting, this might actually make me like [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] more! Usually, it’s a name I neither love nor dislike and just didn’t give much thought to (just because it tends to sit alongside a style of names that’s not mine).
[name_f][/name_f]I do think a fresh nickname gives it a new dynamic [name_f][/name_f] [name_f][/name_f]- my favourite is probably [name_f]Effie[/name_f] (super intuitive and very vintage-ey).

To answer question 3, [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] is not a name that I have strong feelings about. I wouldn’t use it myself as it feels dated, but I do like the way it looks written down.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_f]Effie[/name_f] and [name_f]Fifi[/name_f] are probably my favourite nicknames for [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] of your options. I also like [name_f]Faye[/name_f], [name_f]Fia[/name_f] and [name_f]Elphie[/name_f] as stretchy nicknames.

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Ness[/name_m] is a nice nickname and I think if you had always gone by the nickname [name_m]Ness[/name_m] then the closeness to Ess wouldn’t matter. But because you’re changing your nickname to feel more you, it might come across as honouring or copying. That being said I think that could be resolved with a conversation just letting them know you’re exploring some nickname options and your favourite is [name_m]Ness[/name_m], just acknowledging it’s closeness to Ess? It all depends on whether you think your friend will be bothered by the closeness to her name or not.

Stess is an amazing nn for [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]

Yeah this is a fear, which is why I’m putting so much preparation into it. If I land on an -ess option, it needs to be something I’m super confident in. We’d definitely need a conversation about it. Luckily we don’t have that many overlapping friends, it’s not like we are part of one big group, so that might help. Thanks!

I’m kind of in the same boat because I want to love [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f], but she just feels so dated to the 80s that I don’t think I can shake the association! I do think the lively nicknames freshen her up a bit. [name_f]My[/name_f] personal favourite is [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] (so cute on a little girl, I think).

:sob:[name_f][/name_f] I know, she really got stuck!!

[name_f][/name_f]

I do love [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] in theory [name_f][/name_f]- I’m a huuuge [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] Nicks fan [name_f][/name_f]- but can’t see it on me. I knew a [name_f]Stevie[/name_f] who rocked it though.

I have found I’m more partial to Stephanie when it’s StĂ©phanie? Feels more French and timeless and saintly and fresh and less dated. I couldn’t say why it’s less timeless than Louisa et al, other than how popular it got in the 80s, etc.? Maybe in a similar way to Cassandra, which was Austen’s sister’s name and still feels most tied to the 80s and 90s to me. I voted for Essie as the most unexpected and “oh that’s cool!” Though I thought of Annie on my own merit :woman_tipping_hand:t3::joy::joy:.

If I had my own Stephanie, I’d probably lean toward the nicknames Annie, Anya, Sisi, Tansy, Sanne, Fia, Sissy, etc.? I will pull Annie or Anya out of just about anything I can, though, and Fia too :joy::joy:. All the best on your Stephanie nn hunt!

ETA: sympathize on Stevie not feeling super usable
but Eve/Eva/Evie? Also would use Eva for just about anything I could :joy::joy:

lol I’m also a [name_m]Fleetwood[/name_m] [name_m]Mac[/name_m] fan, which I think is why it’s appealing to me. I also knew a little [name_f]Stevie[/name_f]! But yes, I get that it’s not a name to see on everyone!

Agree! Maybe I’ll just insist on the accent :joy:

[name_f][/name_f]

I suspect the dated feel with both [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] and [name_f]Cassandra[/name_f] is that they dipped out of popularity for the first half of the 20th century, then spiked up, unlike Louisa/Eleanor/Josephine which have been around a bit more consistently? [name_m]Just[/name_m] looking at the top 100 data for [name_m]England[/name_m], [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] leaps up by about 30 places per decade from the 60s-90s then disappears. I wish I knew why she stopped appealing after the [name_f]Victorian[/name_f] era only to roar back again. Must be partly the 100 year name cycle, it felt fresh after a fallow period, but I wonder why it died off to start with when so many other ‘European royalty’ type names didn’t

[name_f][/name_f]

[name_m]Loving[/name_m] [name_f]Sisi[/name_f], and Tansy!! I love [name_f]Tansy[/name_f] anyway, so to think I could maybe get away with that is quite fun. Thanks for your input :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

i like stephanie! she’s sweet with that royal edge, though she’s a little bit dated she’s still stunnning!

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

in theroy yes[name_f][/name_f] but she does really float with the brittany’s and michelle’s,

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

yes!!! she would have definitely gotten that vintage feel!! though my main association is stephanie tanner from full(er) house

[name_f][/name_f][name_f][/name_f]

if it wasn’t a close friend i would think it be okay, but in your case it seems unusable :face_exhaling:

[name_f][/name_f]

hope this helps!! :white_heart:

I’m not sure what I like about [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f] but I do really like it. For the pick one poll I voted for [name_f]Annie[/name_f] because I have that on my own list but I also like [name_f]Effie[/name_f] and [name_f]Nina[/name_f] and would never have thought of [name_f]Tess[/name_f] on my own but love it and think its particularly inspired so that almost got my vote.

I really like the name [name_f]Stephanie[/name_f]! I agree she sounds like she fits in with the Louisa’s and Josephine’s and it’s a shame she isn’t as classic.

[name_f][/name_f]

It’s my MIL name and it’s so funny she was actually a cheerleader in the 80s/90s so that association is so on the nose, at least for me. I think because of that trendiness that’s relatively recent it will probably be a while for her to feel fresh again. I still wouldn’t discourage people from using her because to the next generation, she could be fresh next to the 6 Olivia’s & 4 Ava’s in the classroom! [name_f]So[/name_f] I think the “freshness” of a name is very personal dependent on what area you are and who you know, and not so black and white.
