Stereotypical??

Hello!
I’m writing a book, and I’m slightly worried as [name_m]Tim[/name_m] whether the names I’ve chosen are stereotyped?
It’s set in a modern, Slavic-speaking country (I’ve made up the country and language), and I’ve chosen some Russian/Slavic names for my characters and sometimes changed the traditional nicknames, but I’m worried that they are too stereotypical?
The names I have are:

[name_f]Anna[/name_f]. There’s no nickname of [name_f]Anya[/name_f] or Annoushka here, but I did give her the affectionate term of Annechka?

[name_m]Nikolai[/name_m]. This is an as-common-as-possible name picked by himself. He doesn’t go by [name_m]Kolya[/name_m], but occasionally Nikolasha?

Mikail. I changed the spelling from Mikhaïl because of the way the language is pronounced, and he has the nickname [name_u]Mika[/name_u] instead of [name_u]Misha[/name_u], but is sometimes referred to as Mishka, which I gather is also Russian for teddy?

[name_f]Natalia[/name_f]. She goes by [name_u]Nat[/name_u] or [name_f]Natasha[/name_f], with the diminutive of Natalka instead of [name_f]Natashenka[/name_f], Natyula, etc.

So what I am asking is… are these names stereotypical/offensive? If they are, are there any similar-sounding alternatives I could use?

Thanks very much!!

Hey, Slavic gal here! C: (Note that I only speak for myself, not for every Slavic person on the planet.) And I am also not from Russia directly, but the names you listed work in my country too.

I don’t personally think of them as offensive or stereotypical - they’re just very common. It’s like naming your main characters Sophia and Aiden. But a lot of people have these names, so I don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing.
After all, in Slavic languages, naming is much more “strict” than in English - we can’t name our child surname name, like Sokolov or Kovařík, diminutives are forbidden to put on birth certificates, and making up names is almost impossible. So it’s much more possible that your characters have names that are viewed as “stereotypical”.
To the names specifically:

Anna - This name is popular all over the world, good choice. I think Annechka means Agnes in Russian (at least it does in my language). But hey, nicknames are weird, like many people call Margaret Peggy, so if you want to, I’d say go with it.

Nikolai - This one is the name that isn’t used that much in my country, so I feel like I am not worthy of answering it. Nikolasha is cute though. C:

Mikail - Mishka is “sweeter” nickname than Misha, often used by close people; Misha is more “friend” kind of nickname. (I just thought I’d let you know. c: ) Mishka doesn’t mean teddy bear, but it is connected to teddies. But as I noticed, the connection is fading over time and my brother, who also goes by Misha, stopped getting stupid comments on it when he was about eight.

Natalia - I actually never heard someone of that name going by Natasha, though Natasha is not a very popular choice here. Natalka is a good pick, almost every girl who is named Natalia goes by this nick name! One of my classmates, also Natalia, prefers Natka, which doesn’t have the child-ish feel of Natalka. (-ka endings for nns are considered pet names, but Natka is somewhat “stronger” because of how hard it sounds.)

I am sorry I didn’t offer you any alternative names, I am kinda tired now. I’m sure other users will help. If you’d want to discuss Slavic language(s) and names further, I’d be glad. c: It is heartwarming that people are writing fictions that are not completely USA/UK based.

Good luck with your story! C:

I dont think theyre too stereotypical
I went to school with a bunch of Russian and Ukrainian kids at some point (there was a [name_u]Misha[/name_u] by the way) and heres some of their names: Katyusha, [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f], [name_f]Zina[/name_f], [name_f]Angelica[/name_f] (an-ge-[name_u]LEE[/name_u]-ka), [name_m]Sergey[/name_m], [name_f]Dina[/name_f] (probably a nickname for smth), [name_f]Hera[/name_f]

You’re names are fine. Common? Yes? Stereotypical and offensive? No

I agree! Go for it!

I’m probably not being helpful here, but just randomly, I’m anya and I have a friend named [name_f]Natalia[/name_f], so we’re both on your cast
