I have friends with an adorable toddler [name]Portia[/name]. They are by no means hipsters nor pretentious, just loved the [name]Shakespeare[/name] character and the vibe (her middle name is something very unpretentious, like [name]Mae[/name]).
I think people fear it will be confused with [name]Porsche[/name] and therefore be lumped in with the [name]Chanel[/name] & Hennessy set, but they’re so obviously different on paper I think it would take only one correction before that was cleared up. Others fear it sounds porcine, but it’s not related.
I think it’s a great name, with a great namesake, and would like to meet yet another small [name]Portia[/name].
Thanks I guess I can see your point about the car. It’s unfortunate when brands or cars use pretty names lol. I liked the name [name]Allegra[/name] for so long and it really stinks that their is medication called that. [name]Portia[/name] sounds very beautiful to me but I know some people think names like [name]Lexus[/name], [name]Bentley[/name], [name]Mercedes[/name] and the ones you mentioned seem sort of trashy.
As you can see from my signature, [name]Portia[/name] is one of my favourite names ever! It has such an elegant sound, strong but feminine. The The Merchant of [name]Venice[/name] is my favourite [name]Shakespeare[/name] play and [name]Portia[/name] is my favourite character from it, so that’s a great association to me. At least here in [name]Canada[/name], we pronounce [name]Portia[/name] as por-shah and [name]Porsche[/name] is pohr-shuh (not sure how to phonetically write out that [name]German[/name] R)- different enough no one ever gets confused.
I would love to meet a [name]Portia[/name], maybe even name my own daughter that in the future.
I’m another one who loves the name [name]Portia[/name].
I’ve only met one and that was a tiny feisty girl in [name]Africa[/name], who made me fall completely in love with the name.
I [name]LOVE[/name] the name [name]Portia[/name]! It’s gorgeous.
Very unfortunate association with [name]Porsche[/name] (pronounced exactly the same) but still usable!
I really like the name [name]Portia[/name], but I have a big problem when “celebrities” co-opt a name. Unfortunately, I will from now on always associate [name]Portia[/name] with one of the Real Housewives of [name]Beverly[/name] Hills. It ruined the name for me.
I voted [name]Love[/name] but I would never use it.
I love it for the literary reference . [name]Portia[/name] is a strong female character ( well, for [name]Shakespeare[/name] - although she has to dress like a man to achieve what she wants , but I won’t get into that now )
however , I think in a world where [name]Shakespeare[/name] is not well read, [name]Portia[/name] would often get mistaken for the car ‘[name]Porsche[/name]’ .
In addition, the meaning ‘Pig’ or ‘door’ has always put me off too.
Sorry xx
I like it a lot! There used to be a little girl named [name]Portia[/name] who attended my church years ago–she was very sweet and I’ve loved the name ever since! Plus, the [name]Shakespeare[/name] connection doesn’t hurt! It always seems to get negative feedback and references toward teasing, but I don’t really understand why. It’s a lovely name. It may sound like “[name]Porsche[/name]”, but it doesn’t look like it at all. Besides, no one seems to worry about [name]Alexis[/name]/[name]Lexus[/name]/[name]Lexis[/name], [name]Mercedes[/name], and [name]Bentley[/name] being teased–so why worry about [name]Portia[/name]? Which is completely unrelated and so much classier, imo.
[name]Portia[/name] is a lovely name. It hasn’t hurt [name]Portia[/name] de [name]Rossi[/name] at all either. I think it’s fresh and sweet.
I voted “hate” accidentally. I meant to check “dislike.” The only reason for this is that it sounds like [name]Porsche[/name] and I don’t think that the vast majority of Americans will know the difference, unfortunately. However, I don’t think that it’s a name that will be teased. It’s a great name but, for me at least, it’s not usable- sort of along the lines [name]Lux[/name] or [name]Mercedes[/name].
I think [name]Portia[/name] is beautiful. The only thing stopping me from considering it is I hate the initial P…haha but I love the way it rolls off the tongue
Once people meet a little girl names [name]Portia[/name] I think the little girl is what you would think of and the car associations would be gone
