Stripper names

What makes a name a “stripper name?”

I’d like to start out by acknowledging that, of course, just being named something like “[name]Cinnamon[/name]” doesn’t automatically make someone a stripper. I’m not interested in condemning anybody’s name choices (or career choices!) or calling anybody trashy.

However, it does seem like some names are more likely to be perceived as “stripper names.” I think it would be interesting to get everybody’s thoughts about what those names are, and what gives them a potential stripper vibe.

Maybe we could also discuss anti-stripper names – names that you can’t imagine on a stripper ([name]Mildred[/name]? [name]Ruth[/name]?).

Let the discussions and inevitable hurt feelings begin…

These are names I think many people perceive as stripper (or low-class) names (I don’t necessarily see them that way).
[name]Bambi[/name]
[name]Crystal[/name] or [name]Krystle[/name]
[name]Amber[/name] (I like this name, so I wish it were not perceived as a stripper name).
[name]Tawny[/name]
[name]Misty[/name]

[name]Tiffany[/name]
[name]Brittany[/name] (I really don’t think these names are so bad).

[name]Destiny[/name]
[name]Nevaeh[/name]

Most names are not considered stripper names, especially those that have the reputation for being ugly old fashioned names ([name]Mildred[/name]), sweet and pretty old-fashioned names ([name]Adeline[/name]), and classic names ([name]Katherine[/name], [name]Margaret[/name]).

That’s all I can think of for now.

I think the stripper names are names that we perceive as being used by lower class people (ie) their daughters will grow up to be strippers) or names that seem to be popular as stage names for women in the sex industry.

Mostly no one feels that say about classic names like [name]Elizabeth[/name] or [name]Rebecca[/name] even though I’m sure there are strippers out there named [name]Elizabeth[/name]. Of course their stage names would be something more like [name]Charisma[/name] Diamonique…

Personally, I get the ‘stripper’ vibe less from certain names than the way a name is spelled. Anything yooneek or kreatif generally makes me think it sounds like a name for an exotic dancer. But on names that are actually spelled properly, there are certainly some I wouldn’t be surprised to learn were the names of a stripper but unless its [name]Bambi[/name] or [name]Candy[/name], I’d probably not immediately think stripper.

Then again, I think that might have something to do with having a group of New [name]England[/name] friends who give their children family names like Brownrigg or [name]Montgomery[/name] and then they have the traditional preppy nns like [name]Bunny[/name], [name]Kiki[/name] and [name]Tiffy[/name].

What do I consider stripper names? Well, for a start, [name]Crystal[/name]… and just about everything else which screams ‘I was born to a lower class family in the 70s’. [name]Tiffany[/name], [name]Brittney[/name], [name]Lacey[/name], [name]Macy[/name] etc. That and just tacky names in general - [name]Misty[/name], [name]Tiara[/name], [name]Angel[/name], [name]Destiny[/name], [name]Nevaeh[/name] and what have you.

[name]Ramona[/name], [name]April[/name] and [name]Roxanne[/name] are all on my list, and they have all been labeled ‘stripper’ names, even though I don’t agree in the slightest (although they do have that ‘dated’ feel, [name]Roxanne[/name] in particular)

Oh, and I know the sweetest little girl named [name]Cinnamon[/name]. She’s 5, with blonde curls and blue eyes. This name certainly doesn’t sound stripper-ish to me!

Nope. Not going here. heh

I think the “spiritual” names come off as stripper names to most. Things like [name]Genesis[/name], [name]Heaven[/name], Blessing, [name]Harmony[/name], [name]Bliss[/name], [name]Destiny[/name], [name]Angel[/name], [name]Nevaeh[/name], [name]Epiphany[/name], [name]Trinity[/name], etc.

Although it never occurred to me, I agree with pp that the spiritual names do seem to come across as stripper names, which is so strange and unfortunate because it’s the complete opposite of what the parents clearly intend.

Although stripper names are commonly discussed in the female variety, I’d like to throw the question out there about male names – are there any male names that you hear and automatically think “stripper” or “adult film star”? They seem much fewer and farther between with boys, but they must be out there. [name]Lex[/name]? [name]Xander[/name]? Any name with an “x”? What do you think?

I get the male stripper vibe from ancient [name]Roman[/name] names like [name]Maximus[/name] and [name]Lucius[/name].

catecate, that’s an interesting idea about male stripper names. The names that immediately leapt to my mind were “[name]Rock[/name]” and “[name]Stone[/name].”

Good point about spiritual names, agirlinred. I guess anything that refers to bliss or heaven does lend itself to being used as a stripper name. One of the reasons I started this thread is a discussion about the name [name]Eden[/name] on a different thread - some people thought it was beautiful while others found it trashy.

ksheja, I agree - [name]Amber[/name] has come to be perceived as a low-class name, and it’s too bad. I remember reading a quote from [name]Ty[/name] Pennington where he said that, if he were stranded on a desert island, he would want “three girls named [name]Amber[/name]” with him.

I would add red/hot/spicy names to the list of stripper names: [name]Cinnamon[/name], [name]Ginger[/name], [name]Scarlett[/name].

I always hate that people think my name is a stripper name. And yes, I was born from a working class household in the early 80s. Then I realize I have a PhD from an [name]Ivy[/name] League school. So all of the naysayers can suck it.

I just want to say that I have known some VERY smart strippers, who could hold their own in debates on everything from philosophy to politics. Most of them I met through a discussion forum for strippers, where I had an anagram topic going for stage names. I’m not saying that all strippers are business-savvy, highly intelligent women, but I am saying that there are a lot who are.

Stripping as a form of adult entertainment may be distasteful to some people here, but I by no means would call people in this line of work “low class.” The only people I call “low class” are people who intentionally hurt others.

For those who want some “stripper names,” I’ve included below a list of all the names beginning with the letter “A” from a much longer list that used to appear on the website of Alysabeth [name]Clements[/name] [name]Mosley[/name], a former professional stripper, author, and now happily married wife of a serviceman in our U.S. armed forces.

To answer the OP’s question: “What makes a name a ‘stripper name’?” – just about any name can be a “stripper name.” But some names are clearly more evocative (or provocative). Here are Alysabeth’s own words:

There are color names like Rose, Emerald, Raven and Blanca, animal names like Panther and Bunny, ‘good girl’ names like Jenny, Emily, Sarah or Kathleen, ‘bad girl’ names like Poison and Sin. You can describe your personality with a name like Temper, Passion, Serenity or Joy, or go with a city, state or country, like Houston, Dallas, Georgia, Madison or Paris. There are names that make your mouth water, like Brandy and Champagne, Candy, Peaches or Toffee. Call yourself Bobby, Stevie or Frankie, and you can be sure nobody will mistake you for one of the guys. You can give yourself the name you always wanted or the one you plan to name your daughter, like Vivienne, Alyssa or Soleil, or pick a fun name like Sassy, Scandal or Bailey.

A stripper’s name, contrary to popular belief, isn’t always or even usually a way to hide their identity. It means that they’re a member of the sorority. It is the name they have given the embodiment of their glamorous and sensual selves.

This is hilariously ironic and totally true. Those names do tend to give off, or give people an impression of, a stripper vibe.

Also, my mom and I joke around about stripper names a lot (yes, that probably worries some of you, but it’s all in good fun). For example, I think of [name]Cinnamon[/name] as a stripper name because once my mom and I were looking at hair colors and one was called “[name]Cinnamon[/name] Stick,” to which my mom remarked, “Sounds like a stripper name.”
Also, names with an X in them tend to sound stripper-esque to me (other than [name]Beatrix[/name], [name]Bellatrix[/name], or [name]Alex[/name], etc.). [name]Trixie[/name] is one of them, but that may be because that’s my cat’s name and “to find” your stripper name, you use your pet’s name and street name. So, [name]Trixie[/name] has become a stripper name to me.
Other examples: [name]Jynx[/name], [name]Lux[/name], [name]Nyx[/name], [name]Roxy[/name] (although I do like the name), [name]Moxie[/name], etc.

Also, names like [name]Bambi[/name] and Kiffany (I’ve heard this somewhere) sound kind of stripper-esque to me.

Olivesareyum has me curious – would you mind sharing your name with us? Is it [name]Olive[/name] (which I would actually argue is a beautiful and unique name, not a “stripper” name)?

I don’t mind at all. It is [name]Crystal[/name]. When I was a child I liked my name until I grew up and found out about the stripper association. I actually think it is a fine name, although my personality is such that I think other names suit me better. But I like [name]Nephele[/name]'s way of looking at stripper names–the real low class people are those that put judgements on people based on their SES status or profession.

The first name I thought of was [name]Tiffany[/name] – and to any offended by that choice or the thread in general, I know and love a [name]Tiffany[/name] I consider well-named, and no she is not a stripper. (She usually goes by [name]Tiffy[/name].) So you never know. Certain names may seem stripperish – but that doesn’t mean they won’t work on the right child.

I love the observation above that the spiritual names often, ironically, come off as stripper. Very true. Except [name]Prudence[/name]! I think it’s wonderful [name]Nevaeh[/name] pops up on people’s list.

There are some new names I love, but I think they do belong on the potentially stripper list – [name]Ember[/name], [name]Crimson[/name], [name]Blaze[/name] and [name]Saffron[/name]. There are certain popular name that if you scrunch up you eyes can appear stripper – [name]Lily[/name], [name]Pearl[/name] and [name]Ruby[/name] come to mind.

Thank you, olivesareyum! I like the name “[name]Crystal[/name],” but I especially like your attitude. You made me laugh when I read what you said the naysayers about your name can just go do.

Ha ha, thanks! I think a little spunkiness goes a long way in dealing with certain people

Good points, nephele and olivesareyum. I was careless with my wording, but I don’t want to conflate “stripper” with “low-class” or “trashy.” And I definitely wouldn’t make the generalization that strippers are unintelligent.

My favorite name from Alysabeth’s list is “Scandal.” It was funny to see [name]Blanca[/name] there, since my primary association with that name is the green monster from [name]Street[/name] Fighter.

I do think one very interesting thing about “stripper names” is how often the popular conception of them seems to differ from reality. [name]Stevie[/name] and [name]Kathleen[/name] are probably not the first things that come to most people’s minds if you say “stripper name.”
