Hey folks, new member here struggling with a name for our firstborn.
We just found out on Friday that we will be having a boy, my wife is 5 months along now, and while we are delighted, we had so many girls names and nothing on our boys names list.
What makes things difficult for us is that we are currently living in [name_u]Brazil[/name_u] and my wife is Brazilian. I am from Northern [name_f]Ireland[/name_f].
We have ruled out so many names so far because of spelling and pronunciation (which has caused a lot of issues so far), as we need something that works in both cultures.
We don’t want anything too Brazilian, as a [name_m]Fernando[/name_m] in little N.I wouldn’t be ideal, so maybe leaning more towards a British sounding name, but would also accept double names with a name from each culture in it. (ie [name_m]David[/name_m] [name_m]Luiz[/name_m], although not a big [name_m]David[/name_m] fan)
The child’s second name will be [name_m]Rodrigues[/name_m] [name_m]Craig[/name_m] (pronounced like HODigues), so we are stuck, so you may very well have an opportunity to name a child here. Would appreciate any feedback or ideas, we are open to anything at all that is not too different!
[name_m]Oliver[/name_m] sounds like it would fit (though I’m not sure how the “v” sound will carry over in the Brazilian accent)
[name_m]Orlando[/name_m] is really good as well
[name_m]Manny[/name_m]
[name_m]Monty[/name_m]
[name_m]Diego[/name_m]
[name_m]Dante[/name_m]
[name_m]Damian[/name_m]
[name_m]Rafael[/name_m] ([name_f]Rafa[/name_f] as a nickname)
That’s what I got after a few minutes of thinking. I may add more later.
Thanks for the response guys, appreciate it. Nice to hear some differenr perspectives
kisa - like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] and [name_m]Rafael[/name_m], although don’t love either…would like to hear more of your ideas!
charlieandperry - like quite a few on that list. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is cool and fist both cultures, some are too common though here in [name_u]Brazil[/name_u], like [name_m]Lucas[/name_m] and [name_m]Samuel[/name_m], interesting that you went with [name_m]Oliver[/name_m] too!
Would love to hear from others on this too, just to get a list going…
[name_f]Love[/name_f] a lot of the above suggestions like:
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m]
[name_m]Felix[/name_m]
[name_m]Lucas[/name_m]
[name_m]Hugo[/name_m]
[name_m]Tomas[/name_m]
[name_m]Marco[/name_m]
[name_m]Martin[/name_m] (was first one to pop in my mind when I read your post)
[name_u]Max[/name_u]
[name_m]Victor[/name_m]
[name_m]Arthur[/name_m]
[name_m]Gabriel[/name_m]
Some other suggestions for you:
Filipe
[name_u]Nico[/name_u]
[name_m]Raymond[/name_m]/[name_m]Raimundo[/name_m]
[name_m]Aaron[/name_m]
[name_m]Cedric[/name_m]
[name_m]Cesar[/name_m]
Oh I have similar “must sound good and similar in English, Spanish and [name_m]German[/name_m]” issues.
(I don’t know exactly how close Brazilian Portuguese is to Argentine Spanish but these were given a stamp of approval on the pronunciation from my SO).
Thanks guys, really helping us put a little list together, keep them coming if you can!!
Like [name_m]Oliver[/name_m], [name_m]Oscar[/name_m], [name_m]Thomas[/name_m], [name_m]Thiago[/name_m], [name_m]William[/name_m], [name_m]Gabriel[/name_m], [name_u]Luca[/name_u], [name_m]Ezra[/name_m], [name_u]Ryan[/name_u] so far, but I think we are still searching for that name we love. [name_m]Oscar[/name_m] is very cute though and one we hadn’t even thought of…
Hopefully you can come up with a few more so we can get a good list going…
first thoughts were [name_m]Lucius[/name_m], [name_m]Lucian[/name_m], [name_m]Lucas[/name_m].
i guess one starting point for you could be to take a look at the Brazilian and the Northern Irish babyname rankings of the last years and see which names work in both cultures.
aside from the cultural criterion, what else is important for you about the name? do you like classic names, uncommon names, family names?
kalaway - very creative options, liked the [name_m]French[/name_m] type ones but I think I need something a bit more neutral, [name_m]Jonas[/name_m] is really nice, but quite popular where we live!
vc2013 - We are a religious couple, [name_m]Christian[/name_m], so we like Bible names, but we have been through them all and they don’t wrk for us for a whole host of reasons. We really are open to anything although it needs to have a history of being used as a first name (not necessarily classic, but heard of), and we have ruled out family names on the basis of their being too much repetition in the family already. Honestly though, nothing is a deal breaker apart from pronunciation/spelling issues. The only thing we are clear on is avoiding anything too common, more unique, but not strange (I know that is a tough line to find)
vegas - [name_m]Ezra[/name_m] is quite nice!
If you can folks, keep them coming, really enjoying the creativity and you are really helping us come up with a more creative and fuller list. Thanks to everyone who has responded so far!!
I’ve been really into [name_m]Gustavo[/name_m] lately (been watching Breaking Bad) and it seems like that would fit the bill here perfectly. Part of the reason I love it is because it shortens to [name_u]Gus[/name_u], which would be perfect in NI or anywhere else, for that matter.
Agreed jenna, but unfortunately, we know a coupld only two months further on than us, and they have claimed [name_m]Gustavo[/name_m] as their own, haha, so it is off the table!
hmm, the first “biblical” name that popped up in my head was [name_u]Elias[/name_u] ([name_m]Elijah[/name_m]). i think [name_u]Elias[/name_u] would work in both cultures / languages.
if you happen to have maybe a list of biblical or otherwise religious names you like, you could always look up different versions of the same name… to find a more “international” form.
Yeah, we have been working away at this, but unfortunately most names change dramatically between the two languages and we would prefer to avoid that. We want a name my parents at home can pronounce and live with while at the same time not losing his Brazilian roots.
Thinks we have decided on a name that does not change spelling independent of the country, but a nice Brazilian name as his middle name. So at least we have a framework now…
Something like…
[name_m]Daniel[/name_m] [name_m]Luiz[/name_m]
[name_m]Oscar[/name_m] [name_m]Felipe[/name_m]
[name_u]Ryan[/name_u] [name_m]Jonas[/name_m]
[name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_m]Thiago[/name_m] (prob the frontrunner right now)
[name_m]Just[/name_m] ideas, but something like that anyway…if anybody had any more combinations of English-Brazilian…think we are getting closer!!
