Hey Berries! So my husband and I are expecting our first baby in [name_u]March[/name_u]. We’re locked on a boys name and seem to almost have a girls name! I wanted to get a little feedback on if you preferred [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] or [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f]? Both have special meaning and sound similar so it’s been hard for me to decide!
[name_f]Sue[/name_f]: My mom’s middle name that she went by (she passed in [name_u]March[/name_u] of this year)
[name_u]Blue[/name_u]: My mom’s maiden name and my brothers middle name (who passed in 2013)
I don’t want any alternate middles or first but would love to hear what feeling or vibe each combo gives you, what you’d imagine the child to act/look like, why you like one over the other, anything like that. Thank you in advance for any feedback!
I love [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u]; the flow and aesthetic is incredibly beautiful to me. It’s modern and the other option makes me think of my friend’s nana’s name scrambled ([name_f]Sue[/name_f] [name_f]Ellen[/name_f]), and my aunt’s middle name is [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. It just seems very dated in comparison to the first name as well.
I also love that [name_u]Blue[/name_u] not only honors your mother but your brother as well. I’m a huge fan of color names; they’re expressive and just make me think of very free-spirited, intuitive children.
[name_f]Sue[/name_f] gives me the impression of a good sweet girl, there are lots of names/songs with [name_f]Sue[/name_f] in it [name_f]Mary[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] etc.
While [name_u]Blue[/name_u] seems a strong spunky girl. Yes, there is [name_f]Queen[/name_f] B’s girl’s existence and I think that would be a reason why some might prefer [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. But I think the reason and meaning behind your [name_u]Blue[/name_u] is very meaningful and beautiful.
Soundwise, I find it easier to say [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] and this combination flows well. So my choice would be [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u].
I didn’t even think of Beyoncé’s child, we’re not really celebrity followers in our family.
I’m definitely leaning more towards [name_u]Blue[/name_u] as it honors my mom and brother, is my husband’s favorite colour and also has a fun family history behind it (essentially great grandparents were orphans and got to pick their own surname). My only hangup is I really wanted to use [name_u]Linden[/name_u] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] for a boy in the future if we have 2 boys. Then again I may not have 2 boys so I’d hate to not use it at all.
[name_u]Blue[/name_u], It has double meaning and is meaningful to you! I would use it right now, just in case! There are probably other family for a future baby boy… if you have one!
I think [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] is a bit sweeter, gentler; it still feels like a modern name but [name_f]Sue[/name_f] has gravitas which adds a lot to the combination, it makes it more mature.
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] feels very modern, it makes me think of those “instagram toddlers” that have stylish rooms, trendy clothes, and very big personalities (according to their parents, anyway).
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f] feels more grounded, she’s a little girl that enjoys nature, books and music, has her own opinions and many ideas, she loves to play dress-up and can be both, very sweet and incredibly stubborn.
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u], without the connection you have to [name_u]Blue[/name_u] personally, it just adds nothing for me, it makes the name sound very current but it only sways how I view [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] (trendy) rather than contriubte her own imagery as [name_f]Sue[/name_f] does (adding a certain vintage vibe to the combo which makes it a lot more timeless and adding variety when it comes to who [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] could be).
[name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] is gorgeous! I think [name_u]Blue[/name_u] adds a cool, feisty, storybook feel to the more elegant [name_f]Elowen[/name_f]. I love the idea of [name_u]Blue[/name_u] as a middle, it clearly has loads of meaning for you, and it sounds so good with [name_f]Elowen[/name_f].
I usually don’t like word names, but I think you should use [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] since it honors both your mother and brother.
It’s perfectly fine to use the same middle name for two children if you really want to, even if they are opposite genders. And [name_u]Blue[/name_u] is a family name, so you have an excuse! My stepfather (whose middle name is [name_u]Lee[/name_u]) has 5 children and the oldest daughter and his second son both have the middle name [name_u]Lee[/name_u]. It’s perfectly acceptable.
Thank you for the feedback! DH said he’d be find with using [name_u]Blue[/name_u] as a middle for both when/if the time came. We also have a few honor names for boys we could use in the middle (I don’t love as much as [name_u]Blue[/name_u] but I’d be fine with them).
Thank you everyone else for the feedback on which name you prefer and why! I love seeing other people’s insight and you guys had wonderful points on both sides
Between the two, I’d use [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]Blue[/name_u] before [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_f]Sue[/name_f]. It honors your entire family, and what a cool family name to have!
Besides that, if you do want to use [name_u]Blue[/name_u] on other children, why not consider a second middle? I think [name_u]Blue[/name_u] would be such a great name for all of your children to share, and this way there’s no worry of no one getting an honor name (plus, you can use more of your favorites/guilty pleasures as middles).
