I love the name [name_f]Sunny[/name_f], and I also love [name_f]Honey[/name_f] and similarly cutesy names. I haven’t put any of them on my list, though, because they didn’t feel like “real” names. But now I’m wondering if they are actually usable?
What is your favorite list of cutesy names? [name_f]Do[/name_f] you find them usable?
Also, what are your thoughts on [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] particularly?
They feel different to me (though I’m a bit biased)!
[name_f]Sunny[/name_f] feels usable and bright. I actually had an employer who was a doctor named [name_f]Sunny[/name_f], she wore it very well.
[name_f]Honey[/name_f], I see as a term of endearment. It’s a bit too personal for me. I think that I would feel a bit uncomfortable to hear a stranger or my boss call a young woman “Honey” but I don’t have the same connotations with “Sunny” which feels more like a name (or at minimum a positive descriptor).
Definitely usable imo! I know a few girls named [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] who wear it well. Definitely feels like a real name to me!
[name_f]Honey[/name_f] is a bit trickier, but it’s not that out-there – in terms of popularity, it’s just outside the top 300 in [name_f]England[/name_f]. I personally would only use [name_f]Honey[/name_f] as a middle name, but not because it’s too cutesy, because of it being a term of endearment. I think [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] can definitely work as a first or middle name!
[name_f]Miel[/name_f] is a great alt for [name_f]Honey[/name_f] as that’s what it means! But a bit less gag namey than the [name_f]English[/name_f] “honey”
I like some cutesy names, but I like them better as nicknames than as given names.
The most cutesy nicknames on my list would probably be
[name_f]Junie[/name_f]
[name_f]Millie[/name_f]
[name_f]Posie[/name_f]
[name_f]Sunny[/name_f]
[name_f]Vivi[/name_f]
Usable depends on a few other factors. In my opinion, [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] is usable, [name_f]Honey[/name_f] is not, because [name_f]Honey[/name_f] is used as a term of endearment and that makes it kind of awkward.
As for my thoughts on [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] - I like it! It’s very cute and cheerful. I would use this as a nickname. I am probably not bold enough to use it as a full first name, but if I met a [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] whose actual name was [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] I would like it.
I would say [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] is usable as is or as a nickname for [name_f]Summer[/name_f] & [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. And I’ve known several Sunnys throughout my life.
[name_f]Honey[/name_f] I personally wouldnt use as is, and would only use it as nickname for [name_f]Hana[/name_f], [name_f]Hannah[/name_f], [name_f]Honora[/name_f], Hanorah, [name_f]Hannelore[/name_f], [name_m]Perhonen[/name_m] etc. (I actually really like it and find it verys sweet as a nickname)
[name_f]My[/name_f] ‘cutesy’ list is pretty short but is most names ending in ‘bee’ like, there’s more but I can’t remember right now!
[name_f]Elsabe[/name_f]
Eulabee
Ellaby
I think Sunny is usable - it has an artsy, boho, intellectual feel. Honey is artsy & boho too but I can only imagine wealthy / celeb people using it, the same for Bunny, though Bunny feels so-called old money (meanwhile names like Bambi and Dolly seem to be more widely used). Then there’s the more literary and established, Bonnie.
I really like Sunny but I’d used for Sunday (or Aurelia or Soleil or Solenne), probably.
I almost prefer Honey these days but am not a celeb (lol). Not sure I could go through with it - might instead be a middle that I then use. I’d feel more confident with Sunny as a first.
Finally I’ve had Poesie on list for a long time but as a nn to Josephine.
I love the cutesy names as well and I know several people who could pull off “Honey” as their given name and have it add to their charm. I will say the thing I love about these names is how easily they function as surprising nicknames or middle names, though. A “Honey” whose given name is “Honora” can also go by [name_f]Nora[/name_f] or her full name or use her full name as a fun party fact. To me, that kind of flexibility is really tempting. Why use one name when you can get three?
If you love [name_f]Honey[/name_f] and [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] only on their own, though, I do think they’re useable.
I know a [name_f]Sunny[/name_f], if that helps at all. Not well enough to know what it has been like for her to be named [name_f]Sunny[/name_f], but I think it is fine as a name.
[name_f]Honey[/name_f] I don’t view as a very usable name because it is too much like a term of endearment and I don’t like that in a name. Like I would feel weird with being called “honey” or “sweetie” by a professor or boss, so I wouldn’t want to use them as given names.
I am not huge on cutesy names generally but when they aren’t common terms of endearment they are fine for other people. [name_m]Just[/name_m] not my style.
I’ve known multiple Honeys (as a full name) and two people with [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] as a nickname - one being [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f] ‘Sunny’! Since [name_f]Summer[/name_f] and [name_m]Sonny[/name_m] are popular, I don’t think [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] feels too cutesy or unusable! It’s sweet but sparky - and well, sunny!
[name_f]Honey[/name_f] is lovely too - I guess it just depends how often its used as a general term of endearment where you are (it isn’t where I am, but might be elsewhere)
I think I’m in the minority where I think both names are completely usable.
I prefer Sunny personally, but I actually used to know a Honey (she was a child then, she’d be around 15 now) and, as I was a child myself, the name was normalised for me. I didn’t know her very well but I can’t imagine she ran into too many issues. I think the point about a boss calling a Honey ‘Honey’ is strange - yes, it’s a term of endearment, but in that context it would just be her name and normal for her and the people that know her.
Sunny is so bright and lovely. It’s on my long list and I would absolutely use it as a full first name - but I’m a moderate believer in naming children what you’re going to call them.
Similar names I like off the top of my head (a lot are GP):
.
Rue
Fergie
Tink
Frankie
Lulu
Coco
Bunny
Evie
Pip/Pippa
Polly
I know a 10 year old girl [name_f]Sunny[/name_f]. It is short for [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] but almost exclusively goes by [name_f]Sunny[/name_f]. She seems to wear it well
I think [name_f]Honey[/name_f] is cute and would be fine on a child but I wouldn’t want to be called that by men in a professional career
Prefer the [name_f]Sunni[/name_f] spelling for it personally but I know people who are [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] and [name_f]Honey[/name_f] so I think they can be real names.
I also think the term of endearment thing makes [name_f]Honey[/name_f] middle name only material. I love [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. As a full name by itself, its not really my thing but I do think it works for other people.
I think the only one on my list that fits this category is [name_f]Birdie[/name_f], maybe [name_f]Clover[/name_f], [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] too. I also have [name_f]Posie[/name_f] and [name_m]Lucky[/name_m] on my list but only as nicknames. If we expand outside cute word names to just cute nickname-y names then I like quite a few. [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_f]Josie[/name_f], [name_f]Lizzie[/name_f], [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], [name_f]Elsie[/name_f], [name_m]Freddie[/name_m], [name_f]Evie[/name_f], and [name_f]Sadie[/name_f] are the first to come to mind but there’s definitely more.
I think [name_f]Sunny[/name_f] is usable as a nickname for another name. [name_f]Honey[/name_f] seems more like a pet name or a term of endearment. Other cutesy names I like are [name_f]Bunny[/name_f], [name_f]Dove[/name_f] & [name_f]Birdie[/name_f].
I love …
[name_f]Bitsy[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f]
[name_f]Sukie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]
[name_f]Dodie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Dorothy[/name_f]
[name_f]Lollie[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
Sunny is cutesy but works well as a nature name, and Honey is gorgeous in sound and looks but I’d probably only use it as a middle (and even then…like “Olivia Honey (surname)” still sounds like it could be turned into a joke). Somebody pointed out they’d be uncomfortable to hear their boss call a young woman Honey and I second that. There’s a name I used to go to school with a lot and I think it’s a variant of Hannah — Hani. It’s pronounced almost the same. It doesn’t look as pretty to me, but if it’s sound you like it could do. And if it’s meaning you might like Mel, it means “honey” in Portuguese, and also works as a nickname for Melanie or Melissa and so on. In fact, Nameberry has a list of names that mean honey: 15 Names That Mean Honey | Nameberry
Some cutesy names your style I think work well:
Lily
Rosy
Lacy
Daisy
Peony (wouldn’t be surprised to meet one)
Posy
Maisie/Maisy
If your native tongue isn’t English, maybe names ending in -ita, -inha, -ina and -ette (etc) could work? They’re all diminutives if I’m not mistaken (not all would work but the inas and ettes would, though I’m not sure how cutesy they’re considered anymore). The ie ending also makes pretty much any name sound cutesy in English.
Edit: Someone said Poppy and I second that! My favorite cutesy name ever.
