Looking for feedback on the name “Sunset” for a baby girl. My husband and I want something unique and really like this one. We would discourage her being called “[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]”. Thanks for your thoughts!
I love sunny on a little girl! But actually prefer just sunny or [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]<–it means sun in french (so-lay) NN:sunny
But if you love Sunset go for it!
It’s certainly interesting, and could grow on me as a unique nature-inspired option.
My first reaction, though, is that it is very “wordy”, rather than “namey”. Some unusual word-names work seamlessly as names, despite being very rare, usually because they look or sound like established names — think [name_f]Aster[/name_f], [name_u]Yarrow[/name_u], Betony, [name_u]Oak[/name_u]. Sunset doesn’t, and I actually think the “[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]” nickname you’re trying to avoid could help with that.
I also can’t help but feel that “sunset” as a word/concept is a little loaded: ending, darkness, (metaphorically) death. Perhaps I’m just being overly analytical. But most names with a “sunny” meaning mean sunrise/dawn/light/day, and that seems a little more fitting to me…
Sunset is a big guilty pleasure of mine, but I don’t think it’s really that useable except as a middle name. Sorry!
I agree with @katinka that [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] would make the name more wearable, which is unfortunate since you are trying to avoid it! I also think [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] would be quite difficult to avoid.
I think [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f] is more usable and might work for you guys?
I think it could work, definitely, though - like the others have said - I think [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] would make the name more usable. I too think it would be difficult to avoid.
I agree with the concerns of previous posters. Sunset may be best as a middle name. I think [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] is super cute, and could make it more usable! I also love the suggestion of [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f].
Other suggestions ~
[name_f]Solstice[/name_f]
Skylark
[name_f]Solana[/name_f]
[name_f]Starling[/name_f]
Stellanor
Solandis
Sonali
[name_f]Seraphina[/name_f]
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f]
[name_f]Snow[/name_f]
[name_u]Story[/name_u]
Agree with previous posters, I’d like to add that maybe the nickname [name_f]Ettie[/name_f] or [name_f]Etta[/name_f] might work as well.
It’s like [name_f]Rainbow[/name_f] to me, I love the imagery, the actual thing is gorgeous but I find it rather silly on a person, if I heard of somebody named Sunset I’d certainly wonder what their parents were smoking.
Personally, I’d never ever use my full name on anything if I were named Sunset.
I think it will make a good middle name but is risky as a first name and [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] is not avoidable as a nn - I love the suggestions of [name_f]Sonnet[/name_f], Solandis and [name_f]Solstice[/name_f] - I will suggest
Sunrose - a wildflower from Turkey – I also tried translating Sunset into various languages to see if one of them will make a good name alternative but was empty handed
Better as a middle.
I love it. I think it’s gorgeous. However, I really do think people would call her [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]. Maybe if you find a different nickname for her you could prevent the [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] nickname from happening.
I know a little girl who’s middle name is [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f]. [name_f]Dawn[/name_f] is also beautiful. I’d echo the sentiment of the poster who suggested that Sunset sounds a bit dark in concept…
I don’t find Sunset to have negative connotations, as while it is the end of the day it is frequently very beautiful (and night is not intrinsically bad anyway).
I do think it reads quite hippie, probably more so than [name_f]Summer[/name_f].
I guess “[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]” isn’t so bad…
Appreciate all the thoughtful comments. [name_f]Happy[/name_f] to hear more!
I like [name_f]Sunday[/name_f] and [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] and yet I can’t make myself like Sunset and [name_f]Sunshine[/name_f].
I wouldn’t want it as my name which is my “test” but you may like [name_f]Soleil[/name_f] (so-[name_m]LAY[/name_m]) which I think is beautiful, meaning sun.
Sunset is a huge guilty pleasure for me but I think it’d be hard to pull off as a name.
I just don’t care for it. I really like [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] though.
