I really dislike my surname, let’s just get that out of the way.
It’s very similar to a common surname (in the US) with only one letter difference, so it’s always misread, misheard and misspelled to the more common version. That one letter makes it awkward and heavy sounding even though it’s only 6 letters. It doesn’t flow well with a lot of first names (including my own) and its frustrating because so many of the favorites don’t sound great with it. I mean its not a great name to begin with, but I’m struggling because I feel like the first name/surname combo should sound decent together, but to do so it might mean not getting to use my favorite names.
Current top girl choices, [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f] and [name_f]Daphne[/name_f], sound okay, but the -ie ending sound does not flow well with the -er of the surname especially with both being two syllables. [name_m]Other[/name_m] top choices [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] and [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f] are better, but still suffer a sort of clunky flow.
Boys are worse, my absolute favorite is [name_m]Xavier[/name_m], but surname also ends with -er which makes this one feel unusable. [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] and [name_m]Wilder[/name_m] are two other top choices but again, suffer that same issue with the repeating ending sound. [name_m]Lucian[/name_m] is my final top choice and it’s better but still not a great flow.
I’m curious about others opinions on this. How much did the first name/surname flow factor into your name choices. Did anyway pass on their top choices because they sounded bad together or because the first name had the same ending sound as the surname?
To be honest, I never felt like my surname was that nice either. I’m pretty eager to marry out of it, but I never wished my parents had chosen a different name because of it. Go with the names you love unless it just sounds ridiculous like [name_m]John[/name_m] [name_m]Johnson[/name_m], or forms an unsavoury phrase.
I personally would be happier to know that my parents chose a name they really loved, than to know that they picked the name with the nicest flow. So I say, go with the names you love, even if they don’t flow the best.

I understand your desire to use name to flow well with surname, but its not end of the world if it doesnt flow the best. Sometimes rhyming names sound melodic and nice, are you sure these names 100% dont flow well?

I think it depends on how much it bothers you and whether you’d want to give up on your favourite name because the flow isnt perfect?
I know people with er names and surnames (like [name_m]Alexander[/name_m] [name_m]Renner[/name_m] or [name_f]Amber[/name_f] [name_m]Cooper[/name_m]) whove made it work.
I do think the brain can just get used to something and its sounds after a while

My first name and surname dont flow to well together (imo) as there’s a similar sound and the end of my first and start of my last. But I’m only ever using both names together for medical, legal or academic things. It doesnt come up often enough to be anyghing more than the ocassional annoyance when I have to makde sure to say it all slowly.
I wouldn’t worry about it to much. How many times a week do you introduce yourself with first and surnames? Its probably less often than you realise.
