[name_m]Hi[/name_m] Berries!
I’ve been kind of crushing on [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] lately. [name_f]My[/name_f] question is: is [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] dated or cool/hip/fresh? I really dislike [name_f]Susan[/name_f], so I’m trying to figure out if [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] belongs with the likes of [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], [name_f]Susan[/name_f], and [name_f]Deborah[/name_f] or with [name_f]Miriam[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], and [name_f]Iris[/name_f]. I don’t mind the nn [name_f]Susie[/name_f], but I think I prefer [name_u]Sunny[/name_u]. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think people will think “[name_f]Susan[/name_f]” when they hear [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]? Tell me what you think.
Thanks!
HTB
I absolutely love this name. It’s a fresher, more modern take on [name_f]Susan[/name_f] and I prefer this spelling to [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Susanna[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzanne[/name_f]. Its meaning, lily, is another gorgeous thing about it. I don’t think many people would think [name_f]Susan[/name_f], because when I see it I think of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] or [name_f]Hannah[/name_f].
I think of [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] as a more fresh sounding name than [name_f]Susan[/name_f], [name_f]Deborah[/name_f] etc. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] seems more in line with currently in vogue vintage names like [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Iris[/name_f] than with more dated sounding names like [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] and [name_f]Deborah[/name_f]. I agree with samtay that it reminds me more of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] and [name_f]Hannah[/name_f] than [name_f]Susan[/name_f]. Plus, [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] offers cute nicknames like [name_f]Zanna[/name_f], [name_f]Susie[/name_f]/[name_f]Suzy[/name_f] and [name_u]Sunny[/name_u].
I’m from [name_f]Louisiana[/name_f]. Here, [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is dated and usually pairs up with an overweight, white trash lady that lives in an old trailer home. I don’t like this name much, and consider it dated, but it does fit in with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Iris[/name_f], etc. But don’t let my opinion deter you.
FRESH! It’s gorgeous. [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is right at the top of my list and it’s not even in the top 1000 in [name_u]America[/name_u]!
Fresh AND vintage. I know only one person with this name (this spelling) and she is in 30’s.
I think it is only the Z spellings that appear a little dated and connected to the 70’s/80’s.
I think this name is perfect. I love both the [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] spelling; I go back and forth. (I do think the [name_f]Suzanna[/name_f] spelling makes it look a little dated, due to [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f].)
I don’t think it’s dated. It’s a classic and it was never really that popular. Also, it’s one of those holy grail names: Everybody knows it, everybody likes it, nobody uses it.
I’m honestly not sure. I’ve wavered about this name for years. I also dislike [name_f]Susan[/name_f]. I think what appealed to me more were the cool nicknames for [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]: [name_f]Zanna[/name_f], [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] or [name_f]Sookie[/name_f]. I think they are what make it fresh, but whether you use a nickname or not, the real name is [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and I just couldn’t, without a doubt, say I loved it because the “dated” feel was a great concern.
I think it’s fresh rather than dated - I don’t associate it with [name_f]Barbara[/name_f] and [name_f]Linda[/name_f] but with [name_f]Hazel[/name_f] and [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]. I don’t think of [name_f]Susan[/name_f] when I hear it; it makes me think of [name_f]Anna[/name_f] before [name_f]Susan[/name_f].
I only went to school with one [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], so it doesn’t feel that dated to me. I think [name_f]Suzy[/name_f] fits right in with the other slightly vintage names ([name_f]Sally[/name_f], [name_f]Sadie[/name_f], [name_u]Penny[/name_u]) but not really with the lovely grandma names ([name_f]Minnie[/name_f], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]).
I think it’s a name on the very edge. Using it now, you’ll inspire others to see it in a new light. A few years from now, I think it will enter the mainstream again, though not anywhere near the top.
But there will be people, like one poster above, who just can’t move beyond certain associations. The modern name lovers will snub it for a few more years until it becomes hipster.
I personally love it, but like you, it’s a recent appreciation. There are a lot of ‘old-lady’ names I wouldn’t have considered before actually naming a child, but then you take your child to activities where there are so many name duplicates, and you see the value in digging a bit deeper.
I think it’s great!
It’s a lot better than [name_f]Susan[/name_f], I agree.
[name_f]Susana[/name_f] is my mom’s name, and while she is a very strong and young woman, I do think it sounds dated. [name_f]My[/name_f] mom said she had a lot of problems with teasing when she was growing up. She said she heard a lot of Oh [name_f]Susana[/name_f]!'s. She is sometimes call Sus (first syllable of her name). I do like the [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] spelling, if any, and the nickname [name_u]Sunny[/name_u] is a lot better than [name_f]Susie[/name_f].
I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] this name! [name_f]My[/name_f] daughter is actually [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] [name_f]Susannah[/name_f].
I think [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] has a vintage homespun charm to it and is very beautiful. I don’t think of [name_f]Susan[/name_f] when I hear it, which I agree is dated.
[name_f]Susannah[/name_f] is a delightfully fresh classic! It is sweet, feminine, and fits any age. It is such a sunny name. [name_f]Suzanne[/name_f] might be a tad dated, but never [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]. Can you tell I like it?
I say cute, spunky, fresh! Def not with the likes of [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], [name_f]Susan[/name_f], and [name_f]Deborah[/name_f].
I did know 2 in the 90’s, but I don’t think I’ve met one since.
I love this name! [name_f]My[/name_f] sister is [name_f]Susanna[/name_f] and I have always thought that is was a strong, feminine name. Her nickname is [name_f]Susy[/name_f] ([name_f]Susie[/name_f]) but you could do [name_f]Anna[/name_f], [name_f]Zanna[/name_f], and so many others. It is much fresher and cooler than [name_f]Susan[/name_f].
I fell for this name recently after my two year old out of blue said “baby sister! [name_f]Susie[/name_f]!” I looked up [name_f]Susannah[/name_f] and couldn’t believe it wasn’t more popular! I love this spelling and hadn’t considered “[name_u]Sunny[/name_u]” as a nickname but that’s really cute.
Hey, I love the names [name_f]Barbara[/name_f], [name_f]Deborah[/name_f], and [name_f]Susan[/name_f]! Why are they any fustier than [name_f]Miriam[/name_f]? I also like [name_f]Susannah[/name_f], although the “Oh [name_f]Susannah[/name_f]” song does leap immediately to mind.
