Thinking of this for a girl. Some people have told me it reminds them of a name that was popular in the nineties. Thoughts…[name_u]Sydney[/name_u] a classic name or a nineties dated name?
Well, I put it more in the early 2000’s, but I don’t find it dated. I really like [name_u]Sydney[/name_u]. I was a big Alias fan back in the day.
I like the name [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] but it was huge in the late 90s/early 2000s. I know at least six teenage Sydneys.
I find it very very masculine sounding and incredibly dated on a girl. I pretty much put it in the same vault as [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_f]Jessica[/name_f], and more recently, names like [name_u]Jayden[/name_u].
I think of the city with this spelling. As a name it seems very dated especially on a girl ([name_u]Sidney[/name_u] is quite sweet for a boy, however, just because it’s so old-man rather than 20-something)
My sister’s name is [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], born in the early 2000s (we are very, very far apart in age), but I’ve never thought of the name as “dated” until this thread! It probably will date her though, now that I think about it. That being said, she has yet to meet another person male or female that shares her name.
Personally, I love her name and the nickname “[name_u]Syd[/name_u]” really suits her. I’m also a huge Alias fan, and [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] [name_m]Bristow[/name_m] was my hero growing up so between her and my sister I will never not like this name.
I like [name_u]Sydney[/name_u]. It’s not overly popular but it is definitely not dated.
I’ve never understood the appeal of this as a name to be honest, but as an Aussie that’s likely because my first association is the city…and if you’ve ever been there you’d know why! Sure, it’s got a lovely harbour and the opera house etc etc but the city itself is very dirty and depressing. We have relatives there, which is the only reason we go there ever! So, for me that’s an association I can’t shake. It taints an otherwise lovely sounding word/name to me. I also see it as more masculine sounding to be honest.
As someone who lives in [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] the city, I don’t quite get the appeal just because … you know, I live here and if I did named my kid [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], it would probably feel a little tacky to me. I do like [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] though.
I 'm from [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], Australia but I can honestly say I have never met a girl named [name_u]Sydney[/name_u]. [name_u]Ever[/name_u] since I was a child it’s always been a name for middle aged men. I think of [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] [name_u]James[/name_u] the actor.
The 2 [name_u]Sydney[/name_u]'s I know were born in the mid 80s. [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] was actually most popular in 2002, but it never went higher than #23. I think of it as a classic name and really like it.
I’m from [name_f]Canada[/name_f], and I don’t think of [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] ever having been wildly popular, so it doesn’t feel dated to me. I can think of a couple of Sydneys that I met circa high school, and there’s [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] [name_m]Crosby[/name_m], and all of these people were born in the '80s, so I don’t think of it as a '90s name particularly, and although I don’t have children or spend much time with children currently, I don’t recall ever detecting a major uptick in Sydneys. For whatever reason I’ve always liked it a lot despite generally not being a fan of unisex names (though I’d use the [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] spelling for a girl and the [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] spelling for a boy).
This name has recently made my current favorites list. I never thought much about it before but I really like it now and it is one, of few, names my DH and I agree on.
I like that it isn’t used as much anymore, its a strong girls name but stull soft and pretty… it also has some family ties for me.
I know a [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] who’s about 12 and it actually fits her quite nicely.
It’s not a name I really like, but it’s okay.
I don’t feel that it’s particularly dated, just not everyone’s cup of tea. I don’t think it was ever super popular.
I think it’s a name for people who like the sound of [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] but feel that’s too dated. Personally I like [name_f]Cindy[/name_f] better because it’s uncommon but attractive.
I would be so excited to meet a [name_u]Sydney[/name_u]…though I prefer the [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] spelling or even [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f]. The repeated Y is too much for me
I could see how [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] would seem a bit dated but I think it’s still recent enough to work. Kind of like [name_u]Ashley[/name_u]'s that are middle school/high school aged. It’s not as “strange” as meeting a baby named [name_u]Ashley[/name_u].
I like [name_u]Sidney[/name_u] on a boy, and I also like it on a girl… but I love [name_f]Sidonie[/name_f] on a girl. You can pronounce it the same was as [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], unless you have a real [name_m]French[/name_m] accent. I’ve only met one [name_u]Sidney[/name_u], and she is 14.
[name_u]Sydney[/name_u] is one of the few androgynous names I really like. I find [name_u]Ashley[/name_u], [name_u]Courtney[/name_u], and [name_u]Whitney[/name_u] very dated, but still like [name_u]Sydney[/name_u], especially with a feminine middle name like [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] [name_f]Rebecca[/name_f] or [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f].
[name_u]Love[/name_u] [name_u]Sydney[/name_u] on a girl. I’ve only ever met one, aged two and she was precious. I don’t know many people born in the 90s but I don’t find this name dated at all.
I do like it, but it was quite popular in the 90s. I wouldn’t be shocked to see it on a baby but then again it’s really about what you are comfortable with that matters. My name is more common for people in my mother’s generation and it never bothered me at all so I feel like it doesn’t really matter as long as you like it. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] this helps
