Syver

Thoughts on Syver (see-ver)? Is it too weird? It’s an older Norwegian name that is on both my and DH’s family trees. We were set on using it but my 8 year old son hates it so much that we’ve had second thoughts. We’re a bit fearful now that perhaps he’d be teased.

PS we are team green and have no idea on a girls name either!! [name_u]Baby[/name_u] due 1/9.

I strongly dislike it. It looks like a created variant of Sverre. In English it would probably be pronounce [name_m]SY[/name_m]-ver so that would be an issue for a bearer. I’d explore my options for another, similar name like Sieger or [name_m]Seger[/name_m].

At first glance I wasn’t sure how to pronounce it. Maybe spelling it Siever would make it a little easier to pronounce without having to really think about it. Anyway, I think it’s cute!

I thought it was pronounced as [name_m]SY[/name_m]-ver, as otri suggested might happen. Then again, I’m not familiar with Norwegian names. I like it though! If it weren’t for the pronunciation thing, I think it could totally work. I wouldn’t be discouraged by your son’s reaction though…my older brother wanted me to be named Snowball and hated my given name

[name_m]How[/name_m] about [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m]? It’s relatively close.

I think it can work. When you explained how it’s pronounced my first mental connection was the Seaver family on Growing Pains. [name_m]RIP[/name_m] [name_m]Alan[/name_m] Thicke.

I think it’s great! What’s your 8 yr old’s name, if you don’t mind? [name_m]Just[/name_m] remember, he’s 8!

At first glance it looked made-up and purposefully trendy, as a lot of surnames and names-that-look-like-surnames are. I like that Syver is meaningful to your family, but not sure how wearable it is in an English-speaking country. I think it would be a name that would have to be explained a lot. My first instinct was to pronounce it [name_m]SY[/name_m]-ver too.

I like it and the fact that it has meaning to you…

I don’t think anyone will understand how Syver is pronounced “See-ver” in [name_u]America[/name_u] I’m afraid…

My thoughts, too!

Definitely not a fan.

I think it would often be mispronounced in an English-speaking country. However, I like that it is meaningful for your family.

I like it, but agree that a lot of people might get the pronunciation wrong. It could be a pretty cool middle name though.

I, too, thought it was a trendy name and pronounced it SIGH-ver.

I like cocobean1234’s suggestion of using the spelling Siever. But if it means too much to you to change the spelling, then I guess the original spelling would be fine—as long as you’re ready to do some correcting.
