At the daycare we have a girl name [name]Talia[/name] but she says it as tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ah. I prefer that pronunciation, but being the name nerd I am, know that [name]Talia[/name] is mostly said [name]Tal[/name]-ya, or [name]TAH[/name]-lee-ah.
[name]Do[/name] you think with [name]Tahlia[/name] I could get away with the tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ah pronunciation instead of the other two standard versions?
I went to school with a girl named [name]Tahlia[/name] pronounced like tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ah. It was ALWAYS said wrong on the first day of school or whenever we had sub teachers. I remember one time when we had a sub she was taking attendence and said “[name]TAH[/name]-lee-ah”, the girl corrected her and the sub gave her this strange look and said “that’s the wrong pronunciation, but whatever.” Obviously the teacher shouldn’t have said that, but things like that happened all the time for this girl.
Though I think I think that pronunciation sounds lovely, I feel like people would think you made up the name just because they’ve never heard it before. I’ve only heard [name]TAH[/name]-lee-ah but maybe I’m in the minority? That is a problem I am running into with my daughter’s name - [name]Beatrix[/name]. I feel so many people think it’s a “yoo-nik” form of [name]Beatrice[/name]…like, [name]Izabel[/name] or [name]Charlee[/name]…and sadly don’t realize that it is a real name with history and meaning.
I have always pronounced it tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ah. I didn’t know that was the wrong way or the least common way. Interesting. I prefer tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ah.
I only like it tal-ya, the Hebrew way. Sorry. I think you could maybe get away with it - I hear lots of 3-syllable Tahlias out here, ([name]Oz[/name]) but more [name]TAH[/name]-lee-ahs than tah-[name]LEE[/name]-ahs.
I don’t begrudge 3 syllable pronunciations to anyone except the people who say “tal-ya” is wrong. lol.
To me it’s [name]Tal[/name]-ya only. But that’s only because I’ve known a half dozen Jewish Talyas. It’s a huge pet peeve of mine when people correct my pronunciation. Look I know how to pronounce stuff, I speak multiple languages. If you want it Tahleah then pls give me a heads up with the spelling (T’leah would be more helpful). [name]Just[/name] don’t get mad when I say it “wrong.” LOL
You could throw an accent over it, that might help? I’ve only known one [name]Thalia[/name] (and that’s how she spelled it), and she pronounced it ta-[name]LEE[/name]-ya. She was Latina, though, and that could make a difference.
There isn’t necessarily [name]ONE[/name] correct pronunciation, as names move about and our subject to regional influences. Maybe like English [name]Genevieve[/name] versus zhan-vi-ev, etc?
I pronounced it varied from [name]TAH[/name]-lee-ah to [name]Tah[/name]-[name]LEE[/name]-ah. [name]Both[/name] are correct and equally pretty to me, though I’m not sure why I pronounced it differently from time to time. I strongly prefer [name]Thalia[/name] spelling, as in the muse’s name.
