Tell me about your obscure, subtle, off-beat or stretchy honours

Hi everyone!

While I personally wouldn’t want to use a direct honour (whether that’s a family or friend’s actual name or a variant of it), I do enjoy the idea of subtle, obscure and stretched honours.

I’m thinking of honour names that maybe other people wouldn’t guess right away, names based on anecdotes and memories, names based on the things someone enjoys or that you’ve experienced together, names that just remind you of them or their qualities, maybe matching initials, a twist on their name or a family surname.

So, what are your obscure/subtle honours? Of course, only share what you want to and only explain your honours as much or as little as you wish - a list is great too and I can just wonder!

Alternatively/bonus: Do you like this way of honouring? Do you think a direct honour works better or holds more value? Does it matter if no one else knows it’s an honour

A few of mine, if you're interested...

Charlotte - okay, this is convoluted, but Charlotte Bronte’s most famous novel is Jane Eyre. Jane is a family middle name. Hence, Charlotte - plus a Bronte honour

Seamus - there’s this show called Monkey Life about a monkey sanctuary and one of the monkeys featured is called Seamus. Me and my mum have watched his show together over the years and one distinctive memory is this particular episode where Seamus is particularly naughty that we watched and so it’s a subtle nod to time spent with my mum - plus a cool name

Caedmon - this is one that’s kind of a nod to my grandparents. We used to go on holiday with them and the Isle of Wight is an important place to all of them and one of the ferries used to be called Caedmon - and for some reason, that was our favourite one and the one we always hoped to go on :woman_shrugging:

Bee and Bennett - my mum loves bees - so not as subtle but it’s not direct!

Sailor - an indirect nod to a family surname that is not so usable but has a similar meaning!

Thank you so much for anything you choose to share and for reading these ramblings!

We used direct family honor names for our kids’ middles, but if we have another boy, the plan is to use something more indirect. The name is [name_u]George[/name_u], and it’s a subtle honor for my husband’s four brothers (and my husband) because my father-in-law nicknamed all the boys “George”. None of their names are even remotely close to that, but when you have five boys, it helps to just call them all the same thing sometimes!

We have two names on our list that have the same meanings as the people we are honoring.
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] for [name_f]Patricia[/name_f]
[name_u]Lux[/name_u] for [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]

I love the subtle honoring too. It feels like a personalized way to honor someone without making it a big spectacle if that makes sense. I think honoring is so sweet but in some families I’m sure it causes friction or hurt feelings if some people are chosen over others. I think a subtle way of doing it can make it easier to tell the honorees, have it be unique to the child, and avoid confrontation if that was a concern.

You probably already know these stories @Greyblue

Zakynthos - we used this as a middle name for our [name_m]Endymion[/name_m] and it honors my twin brother. When we were at university, we had a bit of a difficult time (both of us, but especially my brother) and it was the only time in our lives we drifted apart a bit. We went on holiday to Zakynthos together, which is a very beautiful place, and we had the best time there. We talked a lot, and we found each other and ourselves again.

[name_f]Vienna[/name_f] - honoring my father, the Ultravox song was his favorite song, it meant a lot to him. I remember hearing Ultravox a lot when we were growing up  I also went with my father to one of their reunion concerts in 2009. Other names that could work as an honor for my dad and that are related to Ultravox are: [name_f]Serenade[/name_f], [name_u]Cross[/name_u], [name_f]Brilliance[/name_f].

[name_f]Goldie[/name_f] - honoring my husband’s grandmother, who used to call my husband “my golden one”. [name_f]Golda[/name_f] is also his great-grandmother’s name.

[name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] - maybe not really honoring, but I met my husband at a bookstore and our first ever topic of conversation was [name_m]Ulysses[/name_m] by [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_u]Joyce[/name_u], so it’s a nice nod to our relationship

I love this way of honoring! Personally, I think it’s more special than using a person’s first or middle name! It just adds a little bit of sparkle :sparkles:

[name_f]Wrenley[/name_f] 🕊

Honors my grandmother! She loved the name “Wren” for me, and her name ends with -ley! It also honors a family friend called [name_f]Mavis[/name_f], for the “Songbird” meaning.

[name_f]Bee[/name_f] 🍯

Honors my other grandmother and a person who is like a second mother to me. Both of their names mean “Honeybee”.

[name_f]Marigold[/name_f] 💐

Honors my dad and my two best friends, whose birthdays are in [name_u]October[/name_u]! I also love the subtle honor to a family name, [name_f]Mary[/name_f].

[name_u]Haven[/name_u] 🌊

Because of the sweet meaning of this name, it could be seen as an honor for a lot of the lovely people in my life who have served as a haven for me from time to time. I like to think that it honors my great grandmother though, whose name was [name_f]Helen[/name_f]!

[name_u]Lux[/name_u] 💫

This one is a new crush, that I love for the meaning, “light.” It nods to two of my great grandmothers, and a family surname!

I’ll come back for the boys when I have more time!

We lost a baby several years ago and we named him [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Charles[/name_u]. [name_u]John[/name_u] [name_u]Charles[/name_u] is a direct honor of an [name_f]English[/name_f] pastor (JC Ryle) but on top of that, my grandfather went by JC (James C@ldw3ll) so his initials were a way to honor my grandfather too. :blue_heart:

[name_u]Kelly[/name_u] - my dad’s favorite name and has the same initial as my dad and brother

[name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Thalia[/name_f] - [name_u]June[/name_u] after my favorite book growing up, [name_f]Junie[/name_f] B [name_m]Jones[/name_m], and my sister’s initals, and my other brother’s birth month

[name_f]Mariposa[/name_f] - after my late cousin

[name_f]Jessamy[/name_f] - after my sister and cousin (both have [name_u]Jess[/name_u] as a nn)

I love coming up with these!

[name_f]My[/name_f] big one right now is [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], which is my #1 pick for a daughter. [name_f]My[/name_f] name is [name_f]Talia[/name_f], obviously, and my boyfriend’s middle name is [name_m]Matthias[/name_m]. [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is sort of like a combination of that, but it’s subtle and won’t get confusing with either of our names. Growing up, one of my favorite names was [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], which is a nickname for [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. There is also a [name_f]Pink[/name_f] [name_u]Floyd[/name_u] song called [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] Mother. He got me into [name_f]Pink[/name_f] [name_u]Floyd[/name_u], and the song is off one of my favorite albums of theirs. He also likes the song a lot. I love music, and [name_f]Pink[/name_f] [name_u]Floyd[/name_u] is a band that me and him both love so it makes the name even more perfect.

He also likes the name so, it’s definitely a contender for a future daughter! Who, of course, will (hopefully) not be born for another decade or so.

Another name we both like is [name_f]Linnea[/name_f], and both of my bf’s grandmothers are named [name_f]Linda[/name_f], so I think that works as a good honor name because of similar sounds.

We also both like Lucy/Lucie, which could sort of honor my dad who’s middle name is [name_m]Louis[/name_m] (pronounced Lewis) and also [name_u]Louise[/name_u] is a family name. Me and my bf love watching this channel called Kittisaurus on youtube and one of the cats is named [name_f]Lulu[/name_f] which is similar to [name_f]Lucy[/name_f].

There’s also [name_f]May[/name_f], which is the month we started dating. We both like the name, so you can’t really go wrong there. I think I would go with [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] nicknamed [name_f]May[/name_f] and [name_f]Maisie[/name_f]. [name_f]My[/name_f] only obstacle with the name is that it might be too close to [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]. I just realized all four of these names start with M and L, which I mean, sure why not.

I usually prefer more subtle honors as well! Although, some are more direct than others. And some connect to multiple honors!

Here are some from my list…

[name_f]Alice[/name_f] - my mother’s name (Alisyn), my and my sisters’ love for Wonderland

[name_f]May[/name_f] - [name_u]Alcott[/name_u], my sister’s birth month, name of the beach town in NJ where my father’s family grew up

[name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Emerald[/name_f], [name_m]Cosmo[/name_m], [name_f]Marigold[/name_f], [name_f]Lily[/name_f], [name_f]Amethyst[/name_f], [name_f]Chrysanthemum[/name_f], [name_f]Narcissa[/name_f] - the names I love from my family’s birth stones and birth flowers!

[name_u]Clare[/name_u] - Irish county my family is from, also meaningful from a close family friend

[name_f]Eve[/name_f] - my love of winter/Christmas, name that gets to nn [name_f]Evie[/name_f] (which is special to my friends!)

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] - a little baby doll my mother gave me when I was small (I love thinking of honoring my childhood with a name!), a family tree name

[name_f]Louisa[/name_f] - [name_u]Alcott[/name_u], variant of family name [name_u]Louise[/name_u]

I love honoring this way! :heartpulse: It makes the name still feel like “your own”

[name_f]Lilia[/name_f]- honors my mom who’s favorite flower is a lily, but I prefer lilia to lily as a name

[name_f]Soraya[/name_f]- honors my dad because he absolutely loves the night sky. [name_f]Soraya[/name_f] comes from the Arabic word for the constellation Pleiades which I remember him pointing out to me more times than I can count :sparkles:

[name_u]Cassidy[/name_u]- honors my mom and one of her favorite songs. I grew up listening to this song and it’s meaningful to my whole family

[name_u]Brooks[/name_u]- is a play off of someone in my life’s last name

All of my ocean related names also honor my mom (Wave, [name_u]Coast[/name_u], [name_m]Tide[/name_m] etc, I have alot) and her immense love for the ocean :ocean:

and [name_u]October[/name_u] as a name has been growing on me, which would honor someone important in my life who was born in [name_u]October[/name_u] :jack_o_lantern:

I like/do it both ways, so yes, yes, and yes!

Lucy Mae, Mae, and Lucy itself has to be my main one!

Lucy Mae comes from Louisa May Alcott. I love the nickname Lucy for Louisa, and I prefer the spelling Mae, so I decided if I should ever want to honor my favorite author, it would be in the combo Lucy Mae!

Mae comes from, again, Alcott, as well as the birth month of many people in my family. It’s also a form of Margaret, as is Maggie, which is what we call my nana (she has an unrelated name from Maggie, I will say that ) so that’s as stretchy as it gets!

Lucy itself is from the lovely Lucy Pevensie in Narnia, as well as Lucille Ball. I adore the meaning of light, and all three of the people mentioned above seemed to have brought a unique light into the world.

I do have a few others, however, and they are…

Isabella, Beatrix, & Indigo— Isabella was the name of my favorite doll on planet Earth when I was younger. I called her Bella and named her sister Indigo Enda, whom I called Enda (I thought I made that up until I joined NB and found it as a boys name :joy:). I also called her best friend Beatrice, so I like Beatrix as an honor for that. Then I ultimately got bored with dressing them up, so I gave them magical powers, so they have a cooler vibe in my mind, now! :hugs:

Jack—- from Jack in the Beanstalk, and a 100% better version of him in a book series, as well as some other unrelated characters named Jack I just adore! It’s also the nickname CS Lewis’ family and friends gave him, and he’s right up there on my favorites list with Alcott!!

I much prefer this kind of honoring if I’m honest! I used to think I would never consider using an honor name mostly because I like the idea of having a variety of names in my family tree rather than reusing the same few every generation - but to each their own of course!! It can be very meaningful to directly reuse old names.

I tend to like honors that have a close tie to the original name without being identical. Some of these include:

  • [name_u]Rosamel[/name_u] for [name_f]Pamela[/name_f] – shared meaning of “honey”
  • [name_f]Antonine[/name_f] / [name_m]Antonius[/name_m] for [name_m]Anthony[/name_m] – variant
  • [name_f]Reine[/name_f] for [name_u]Wren[/name_u] – sounds alike; a bit of a stretch since it honors me  but I like the subtle connection
  • [name_f]Juin[/name_f] / [name_u]Juno[/name_u] for [name_u]June[/name_u] – variant
  • [name_f]Lune[/name_f] – honors the surname [name_f]Moon[/name_f]

Not quite an honor - but something that I’m also considering is using a cohesive theme for my future kids’ middles, like my parents did with me and my brother (we both have bird middles). I think it would be cool to continue that or choose a different nature theme like botanicals or animals to tie their names to the family!

[name_f]Emerald[/name_f]! Its relations to me are quite personal so I won’t be mentioning those.

Some others:

  • [name_f]Marigold[/name_f] - Marigolds are the birth flower of [name_u]October[/name_u], honouring many of my loved ones born in [name_u]October[/name_u].
  • [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] - It means ‘dawn’ similar to my own name’s meaning. It subtly honours [name_u]Taylor[/name_u] [name_m]Swift[/name_m] (“I want auroras and sad prose”)
  • [name_u]River[/name_u] (b) - [name_f]My[/name_f] name has an alternative meaning that is similar to [name_u]River[/name_u].
  • [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - A little nod to my partial [name_f]Indian[/name_f] ancestry.
  • [name_f]Clover[/name_f] - Another nod to my partial Irish ancestry.
  • [name_f]Irene[/name_f] - Character in [name_m]Sherlock[/name_m] [name_m]Holmes[/name_m]
  • [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] - [name_m]Apollo[/name_m] is a sun god. That relates to my own name’s meaning.
  • [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] - Arthurian Legends and [name_u]Arthur[/name_u] [name_m]Conan[/name_m] [name_m]Doyle[/name_m].

Ooo this is really cool!!
For me these names would be some of my top and favorite names of all time that I would use on a kid one day.

For boys;
Zlatan :star2:; (Slavic, meaning “golden”); I’d love to use this name as it reminds me of my grandma ; growing up she’d always call me Zlata or Babino zlato (meaning grandmas gold/ golden child roughly as a translation :PP) and this name always reminds me of her. I also like this name because I’d want my child to know they’re golden to me no matter what they do or who they are, just like my grandma always made me feel growing up  I really love this name and the vibrant and wonderful meaning, it’s really dear to me. I’d also use the girl version of this name, Zlata, for the same reason

Oliver :evergreen_tree:; this is a bit of a stretch, but this name was one of my mamas favorite names growing up and it really grew on me over the years because of her, the way she’d describe the name Oliver. And also because of an older musician I’d listen to in the car with my mama over the years named Oliver, who was once popular in Serbia in the 80’s/90’s era; this name reminds me of the singer and the good times with my mama. It’s sorta of an honor to her and all the times we shared.

Adrian :ocean:; this is also another one of my mamas favorite names that I love now, and because we both love the ocean a lot; it reminds me of our bond and memories growing up. We would go to the water a lot and it really calmed me growing up and soothed me in a way; so this name is a nod to her and our memories tied to the water.

Bogdan :mantelpiece_clock:; This was also another one of my mamas favorite names that I love now as well. She liked it a lot because of the religious context and the ties to our culture; and I love it for the same reason. It’s also grown on me a lot this year and I love so much, especially since I’ve become more religious in recent years; and this name reminds me of my mama, my upbringing and the traditions woven together that Shes taught me over the years.

Boris :crossed_swords:; It’s also another one of my mamas favorites (lots of boy names that are her favorites are also mine; we have a similar taste in boy names somewhat:joy:) and I like the history, ties to my culture, and how strong this name feels to me. It’s grown on me a lot this year, and I really love it because it reminds me of my mama in a way, our memories together, and my culture.

Igor :open_book:; Another name my mama and I both love, it’s one of those names that really reminds me of the memories me and my mama have shared when I was growing up; and fond memories of my time visiting my family and just the ties to my culture. I feel like it’d be a nice nod to my mama and memories of our time together.

Njegoš :european_castle:; “to nurture” (This name is also a nod to my mama, Nada. I love the meaning and history of this name, it isn’t too common but it’s heard of in my home country. It also reminds me of how supportive my mama was growing up of me as well)

Mateja :love_letter:; Another name I love thanks to my mama, it reminds me of my religion, traditions, and the upbringing I had growing up. This name means “gift of god”, and because ive grown more religious over the years, this name brings an honor to my mama and religion in a way.

𝐙𝐝𝐫𝐚𝐯𝐤𝐨 :rose:; “𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡𝐲”. (This is another name I really grew to love thanks to my mama, and a singer I’d listen to a lot growing up named Zdravko. I have fond memories of me and my mama listening to his music and singing loudly to it; and it also symbolizes the strength and resilience I’ve seen my mama have ever since Shes had some health issues, so this name is in honor of her as well.

𝐌𝐢𝐥𝐣𝐚𝐧 :love_letter: ; “𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐭, 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫” (Another name I grew to love this year, it’s a bit of a nod to both my parents, and it reminds me of both of them and the fond memories I’ve had growing up. It’s tied to my culture as well, and I love the meaning.)

𝐉𝐨𝐯𝐚𝐧 :maple_leaf:; “𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞, 𝐆𝐨𝐝 𝐈𝐬 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬” (One of my favorite names of all time, this name has especially grown on me this year and I love it a lot. It honors my saint, Jovan, as well as the day of my Slava for my culture. It’s really important to me and ties well into my culture, and I love the meaning and how simple and sweet it is.)

𝐕𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐣𝐞 :crown:; “𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐥𝐲, 𝐒𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐥 (Another nod to my parents, as I went to a monastery with the same name in Montenegro this summer, the same one my parents went to right before they had me and left for America )

Ilija :candle:; “god is my light, form of Elijah” (another nod to my parents, and my dad in a way. Reminds me of the light they gave me and the hope to keep going).

Lazar :anchor:; “form of Lazarus, god has helped” (another nod to my parents for the same reasons as Ilija ^_^)

Girl names;
𝐌𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐚 :honey_pot: (“𝐡𝐨𝐧𝐞𝐲”) To me, this name honors my great grandma who recently passed away, whose nickname was Medo (meaning honey); and who used to be a beekeeper. He was a really great guy with a gentle soul, and I’d love to honor him by using this name one day for a girl. It reminds me of his gentle soul, and someone who is fearless as well.

Nevena :tulip:( “marigold flower”) ; even though this name is super popular in my parents home country, I do love it a lot for its meaning and everything. It’s also a subtle nod to my mama, whose name is Nada, and reminds me of her :))) id use the less common boy version, Neven, for the same reasons :)))

I prefer this method of honoring! I like that the connections are more personal and intentional. Honoring based solely on variants of the same name can be constricting in my opinion.

Though I haven’t and will not be naming any kids, I went through the process of naming myself and wanted to honor a teacher who made a big impact on me during my high school years that I still remain in touch with.

She happened to host our National [name_m]History[/name_m] [name_u]Day[/name_u] Competition, and I chose [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] van Gogh as my subject when I competed. He was a significant historical figure to both of us and when the time came to choose a middle I knew [name_m]Vincent[/name_m] was the perfect way to honor both her and my love of history all at once (:

[name_f]My[/name_f] granda passed recently, and his name was [name_m]Patrick[/name_m]. [name_f]Lot[/name_f] of Patricks in [name_u]Ireland[/name_u], all named after the [name_u]Saint[/name_u], of course. I thought a cool way to honour him would be to use St. Patrick’s real name: [name_m]Maewyn[/name_m]. I think a boy named [name_m]Maewyn[/name_m] would be sweet.

They’re not all crazy stretchy but stretchy enough for me

[name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] and [name_f]Adele[/name_f]

So [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] and [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is after my great grandma [name_f]Delia[/name_f] (DEHL-yah) who passed last year. [name_f]Adele[/name_f] is a bit obvious, Adele, [name_u]Del[/name_u]ia. I started liking [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] before she passed but one of the last conversations I had with her I was researching [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] and she was asking me about what I was doing so talked to her about it. It’s a conversation that will always be with me. Because of that I use [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] as an honor for her. There’s other ways that it connects to her, my grandma full name was [name_u]Carmen[/name_u] [name_f]Delia[/name_f] so sound wise it’s somewhat similar to [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u]. Another thing is that in there’s always a lot of flowers and plants in [name_f]Frida[/name_f] [name_u]Kahlo[/name_u] paintings, my grandma loved flowers and my entire life always had a big flower garden

[name_m]Neizan[/name_m]

After one of my best friends [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]. [name_m]Neizan[/name_m] is the Spanish version of [name_m]Nathan[/name_m]

[name_f]Amada[/name_f], [name_f]Amparo[/name_f], [name_u]Amal[/name_u], [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Hestia[/name_f], [name_m]Helios[/name_m]

All honors for my mother! Her name is [name_f]Aime[/name_f]. [name_f]Amada[/name_f] is the Spanish version of [name_f]Aime[/name_f], and [name_f]Amparo[/name_f] and [name_u]Amal[/name_u] are because of the A and M. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is because my mother is a redhead and it’s also her favorite flower. [name_f]Hestia[/name_f] and [name_m]Helios[/name_m] is a nod to her personality

[name_f]Amapola[/name_f]

[name_f]Amapola[/name_f] is an honor to both my parents! A and M is in my mothers name. [name_f]Amapola[/name_f] is Spanish for the word [name_f]Poppy[/name_f], and what I’ve called my father my entire life is Papi!

[name_f]Glory[/name_f], [name_f]Salomé[/name_f], [name_u]Honor[/name_u], [name_f]Aintza[/name_f], [name_f]Ursa[/name_f], [name_f]Opal[/name_f], [name_f]Emerald[/name_f]

All honors for my grandma [name_f]Gloria[/name_f]! [name_f]Glory[/name_f] is obvious but the others need explanations. [name_f]Aintza[/name_f] and [name_u]Honor[/name_u] both have meanings related to [name_f]Glory[/name_f]. [name_f]Salomé[/name_f] was a name my grandma considered when she was pregnant with my mom. [name_f]Ursa[/name_f] is a name that means ‘female bear’, bears are my grandmas favorite animal. [name_f]Opal[/name_f] is her favorite stone. [name_f]Emerald[/name_f] is a not to her favorite color green :green_heart:
