Tell me what you think of the French name Brune

Hello Berries,

We are having a crush for the French name Brune (it sounds like June or Prune). I find the sibset Liv & Brune absolutely adorable. We also have Alma, Billie, Colette and Romée on our top list.

What do you think about Brune? Would it be wearable in an English speaking country?

Thank you!

I’m personally not a great fan, but that might be because I haven’t heard it before as I imagine it growing on me quite quickly.

I really do not like it! Describing it as being similar to [name_f]Prune[/name_f] and [name_f]Brunette[/name_f] did not help :joy: It also sounds like broom oh dear.

I do think it’s better with the French pronunciation than as in Bruno but both feel very heavy to me (literally the opposite of liv, which feels light and airy) and only make me think of the colour brown.

A prune is a fruit (french for Plum) and brunette just means dark-haired woman. Nothing wrong with it
[name_f]Prune[/name_f] is actually a name we see in [name_f]France[/name_f].

I usually like unusual names and although I do think it has a cool, edgy vibe - I’m just not sure it feels complete enough…

I agree above that now you’ve put prune I can’t unsee it!

Everything sounds lovely in a french accent too, may not have the same appeal everywhere

But I think once a child is named it, they’ll own it

Yes, I know what these things are. Interesting [name_f]Prune[/name_f] is a name in [name_f]France[/name_f]! [name_f]Prune[/name_f] would definitely be an iffy name in the US. Here its associated with prune juice and pooping! :joy:

I first came across Brune in one of your posts last year and it’s grown on me a lot since. I definitely see the appeal now. The variation Bruna has since made it onto my own list so I appreciate you introducing me to the name.

Liv and Brune is a compelling sibling set. The more I say it, the more I enjoy it. I also like the way Brune expands the potential directions for future siblings. I think Liv and Brune is one of my favourite pairings from your list along with Liv and Colette.

In the context of living in an English speaking country that is also very multicultural, I don’t think Brune would face any significant challenges. I would anticipate that many would be unfamiliar with the name and would therefore proceed cautiously at first with pronunciation and spelling. As a one syllable name which can be explained with a simple reference to the rhyming name June, I don’t see why it wouldn’t be wearable.

[name_f]Brune[/name_f] has quite an appealing sound to me. I quite like it

I like it! It makes me think of a sun-kissed little girl playing on the beach or in the sunflower fields :sunflower:

I think it’s a perfect fit for your other names, especially in a French-speaking context. It’s sleek, simple, characterful and has a bit of a retro-meets-bohemian charm.

In English, Brune is far less familiar and could sound a bit heavier than the likes of Liv, Alma, Billie and Romée to the English ear, because it’s similar to the rather clunky (but I think very cool!) Bruno. But I totally agree with this:
