Tempest

Thoughts on [name]Tempest[/name]? Is it even usable? Nicknames?

Considering that it means “turbulent, stormy”, I’d never use it. I believe that the meaning of the name is what you’re essentially calling your child. I’ve seen far too many meanings come to pass through in personalities of children to take it lightly, or deem it coincidence.

It is usable, there’s the actress from The Cosby Show, [name]Tempestt[/name] Bledsoe who played his daughter [name]Vanessa[/name]. I don’t see any nicknames beyond T, Tem, [name]Em[/name], [name]Essie[/name]. There’s of course [name]Temp[/name] (as in Temporary) and Pest, which are undesirable.

Teasing potential of Temptress too…

I’m not personally big on meanings, but I’m also not big on word names, so this one is not at all my style. It does seem a little too over the top to me, but kids are named [name]Storm[/name] and [name]Stone[/name], so why not? I’d prefer [name]Temperance[/name], though, which has the same sound but is an actual name, and a unique one at that. As for nicknames, I’ve heard the nn Tempy for [name]Temperance[/name]. I suppose it could work for [name]Tempest[/name] as well.

I second the preferring [name]Temperance[/name]. [name]Tempest[/name] just invokes visions of children throwing fits - tempest is a pretty strong word association to get past.

For what it is worth, I know a [name]Tempest[/name] who is the most darling person and a very successful doctor.

I like [name]Tempest[/name]. For a nickname I like [name]Tess[/name] or [name]Tessa[/name].

I like it. My love for [name]Shakespeare[/name]'s The [name]Tempest[/name] knows no bounds. I love everything about it. It is far and away my favorite of his works and one of my favorite pieces of literature in general. It is, however, a bit of a cumbersome name. I think it’s a word people would know, so you won’t get too many misunderstandings, but it’s just a lot of name. And a lot of word name. I might name a child [name]Ariel[/name] or [name]Miranda[/name] before [name]Tempest[/name] if I wanted to channel the play.

Ever since an acquaintance of mine used it as a stage name, I can’t go there. It’s cute but… if you knew this person you would understand my aversion.

[name]Tempest[/name]: it’s just not a positive image for me.

I prefer [name]Temperance[/name] as well but I think that the nn Tempe would work for [name]Tempest[/name] as well. I do like [name]Tess[/name] as well.

I know a girl named [name]Tempest[/name] [name]June[/name], she is the sweetest, most well behaved child I know. I think its how you raise a child is how they turn out, I love the name despite its not so desirable meaning. Go for it
