I’m tired of agonising over this, so it’s time to ask for some help!
He’s a fairly important character, so I can’t just refer to him as “TBD” forever. The story takes place in a typical Medieval Fantasy Setting™, and so far I’ve used a voluntarily messy mix of nature, classical mythology and Arthurian names with a few inventions thrown in.
A few information about "TBD"!
As the title states, he’s an alchemist; as well as a highly intelligent but aloof kind of person; an insufferable genius who forgets to be kind, so to speak. He’s very rarely seen sitting still or “doing nothing” and spends most of his time working/experimenting, creating various potions and remedies, observing nature, studying strange and unusual subjects, etc. “I do not have time for this / for you” is definitely one of his go-to phrases.
He was recently offered a prestigious position at the king’s court, his (dangerous) creations being deemed useful as a war is unfolding. “TBD” quite clearly despises the king, but nonetheless accepted the offer, as the war (which he sees as a foolish waste of time and resources) hit him hard. He’s satisfied with this arrangement for the time being, as it gives him 1. money and 2. a sense of security in these troubled times.
He has an adopted child named Datura (after the poisonous flowering plant) and is a surprisingly loving parent despite his rather unfeeling personality (but clearly doesn’t care enough about his kid’s emotional imbalance and spoiled attitude).
I tried my hand at Artbreeder to give you a good idea of his appearance:
In the past, I’ve considered naming him [name_m]Helio[/name_m] or [name_m]Sylvander[/name_m] / Silvander but neither feels 100% right. Any suggestions are welcome!
If you were considering [name_m]Sylvander[/name_m] / Silvander (which I think suits him well), you may like [name_m]Silvestre[/name_m] (a variant of Sylvester), [name_m]Sylvester[/name_m] / Silvestor perhaps just [name_m]Silver[/name_m].
@GeographyDragon Thank you! These are great suggestions, I particularly like [name_m]Lysander[/name_m], [name_m]Edmund[/name_m], [name_m]Leander[/name_m] and [name_m]Soren[/name_m]! I’m also sort of reconsidering [name_m]Sylvander[/name_m] / Silvander, haha.
That’s very kind of you! You’ve been a great help, but if you do have any more ideas, please feel free to share them as I will probably need a few days to mull things over anyway.
I’m glad that you like it! Botanical names can provide a lot of inspiration, and I don’t regret my choice here.
@marysia Thank you! I absolutely love [name_m]Hadrian[/name_m]. Calidore, [name_m]Everard[/name_m] and [name_m]Sylas[/name_m] are great too, and it’s funny that you mentioned [name_m]Amadeus[/name_m], I remember [name_m]Amedeo[/name_m] being my first thought in the very early stages of development, so… another one to reconsider, maybe?
@Victory55 Ooh, I hadn’t thought of [name_m]Roderick[/name_m]! [name_f]Love[/name_f] that name. Thank you!
@Johannaa Thank you! [name_m]Donato[/name_m] and [name_m]Alvaro[/name_m] are two I probably wouldn’t have thought of on my own, but I really do like them. And [name_m]Nicander[/name_m] (what a great meaning)!
