The Aurelia Dilemma

Annnnd I’m back with another one. Seems I’m on a roll this week.

Guys I need some help. I have a love/hate relationship with [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f].
At first I absolutely detested it but then it slowly, but surely started to grow on me and I don’t know how but it found it’s way into my Top 5.

What’s the problem you might ask? Well earlier today someone mentioned that it sounded a lot like a certain bodily attribute. Areola.

Now I can’t unhear it. I wish they never told me because now I feel like the name has been ruined.
[name_m]How[/name_m] bad is it? Realistically, how high is the teasing potential?

The reason I like [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is that every single nickname for it, I love which is EXTREMELY rare.
([name_u]Ari[/name_u], [name_f]Ellie[/name_f], [name_u]Rae[/name_u], Relly, Réa, [name_u]Rory[/name_u])

The second conundrum, pronunciation.

1. Uh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-ah
2. Aw-REEL-ya
3. Or-ah-LEE-ah
4. Aw-rell-ee-ah

Which pronunciation is the correct one? Are they all correct? [name_m]How[/name_m] would YOU pronounce it? Personally I like the latter above all and would most likely pronounce it that way.

What are your thoughts?

Summary: Is [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] too close to areola? [name_m]How[/name_m] would you pronounce [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]?
èèèèèèèèèèèèda

I don’t see the similarity. [name_f]Ariella[/name_f] sounds much more like Areola, and it’s used often. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is gorgeous! I say it either as “oh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-a” or “oh-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-lee-a”

Sigh. No, it doesn’t not sound like/make me think of areola. It was a real silly thing to say. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is beautiful.

I pronounce it like #4.

I don’t see it either. It sounds nothing like areola to me.
I pronounce it like Aw-rell-ee-ah and I think it’s absolutely beautiful.

I pronounce it uh-reel-ee-uh. I don’t think it looks or sound like areola to me at all.

The person who told me this was my sister-in-law. She found out about me wanting to change my name last week and ever since then she’s been questioning me on all the names I’m considering. She’s just about found something wrong with all of them and I’m getting quite tired of it yet for some reason I find myself wanting to find a name that she approves of.

Maybe it was just the way she said it… she does have a strong accent.

I hear no similarity at all. But I do use the awh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-uh pronunciation.

I wouldn’t think of areola because, while the sounds are similar, the emphasis is not. I love [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f], I think it’s a gorgeous name! I say it like oh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-uh or or-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-uh. The first syllable is hard for me to write out exactly but the middle part is definitely [name_u]Ray[/name_u] for me.

I love [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]! I pronounce it more than one way, because I’m bilingual, but, in English, I pronounce it like #1 or #2.

I never would have made this connection, honestly I don’t think this name sounds like areola and I don’t think it would lead to teasing.

I think [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] is a lovely name and I pronounce it the same as option 4 but I’m English/Australian so not sure how it would be pronounced in the US

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] has been in my own top 5 for at least a few years and I’ve never ever made a connection to areola. I love everything about this name, and if anything my [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] makes me think about gold star instead. One of the middles I chose is [name_f]Estelle[/name_f] (star) and [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] means golden, hence the beautiful imagery.

I pronounce it Aw-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-ah or Aw-rell-ee-ah. The pronunciation difference doesn’t bother me though, not unless I actually hate the other pronunciation options, which I don’t in [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] case. When my daughter is older, she may choose what she likes best herself.

In your case, I say pick a name that you love enough to use without her approval anyway. What are other names you consider?

I wouldnt connect it with Areola

I pronounce Or-ray-lee-uh (like number 1 basically) but i also know a little Aw-REEL-ya so either work for me

I don’t think it’s too similar at all – especially with all the different pronunciations [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] can have. Plus, most kids won’t even know what an areola is so I doubt she’d be teased.

[name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]'s one of the names I always go back and forth on for pronunciation. My first instinct is aw-ree-lee-uh, but I’ve heard it being pronounced aw-ray-lee-uh.

I pronounce it “aw-[name_f]REE[/name_f]-lee-ah”. The name has always reminded me of ‘areola’ or ‘orally’, so I would personally never use it!

I pronounce it like #2.

Apologies for thread bumping but I just woke up and read all of the replies. I feel incredibly relieved. All of you put my mind at ease with the areola thing. Thank you. Your responses were just what I needed to hear. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] will stay on my list.

I’d say you’re right. Who cares what her or anyone else thinks. I need to stop looking for other’s approval (a life long habit that isn’t just with names, unfortunately) and pick a name that makes me happy. That’s all that matters right?

I’m still working on my list but so far the other choices I’m considering are;

A

  • [name_u]Artemis[/name_u] “[name_u]Ari[/name_u]”
  • [name_f]Athena[/name_f]
  • [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]”
  • [name_f]Alyx[/name_f] (short for [name_f]Alyxandra[/name_f]?)

E

  • [name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]”
  • [name_f]Eve[/name_f]

S
- [name_f]Saskia[/name_f] “Sassy” (“[name_u]Sasha[/name_u]”?)

  • [name_f]Serafina[/name_f] “[name_f]Sera[/name_f]”

Z
- [name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f] “[name_f]Zee[/name_f]”

I adore [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] and agree with the other posters that it doesn’t remind me of areola at all. I pronounce it primarily as “uh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-uh” because it’s how Romanians and Spanish speakers say the name, which are the dominant cultures our family will be blending. Obviously we say it in an Americanized way, but I think it’s just lovely. I’ve made peace with the other pronunciations and don’t mind if other people use them, but we’ll always say uh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-uh or ah-RELL-ee-uh. My sister in law is eye-ing the name though so we’ll see who gets to use it first, haha.

Anyway, here are my thoughts on the other names on your list:

[name_u]Artemis[/name_u] “[name_u]Ari[/name_u]” - [name_u]Love[/name_u] this name. Not sure I’d use it myself but I love the idea of it! Perfect goddess to be named after.

[name_f]Athena[/name_f] - Absolutely [name_f]ADORE[/name_f] [name_f]Athena[/name_f]. It’s one of my favorite names in the world. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a lovely nickname for it.

[name_f]Amelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” - I like this one but it’s just so common that I feel like it doesn’t quite suit your style? You have such an unique, intriguing style and this doesn’t seem to fit.

[name_f]Alyx[/name_f] (short for [name_f]Alyxandra[/name_f]?) - Hmm. I know someone who uses this spelling (a boy). I think it’s fine but I don’t love it. It feels kind of pointless to me to change the spelling of the very well known [name_f]Alexandra[/name_f].

[name_f]Eleanor[/name_f] “[name_f]Ellie[/name_f]” - I like it! A bit serious, but pretty.

[name_f]Eve[/name_f] - Not my style. Feels too religious.

[name_f]Saskia[/name_f] “Sassy” ("[name_u]Sasha[/name_u]"?) - [name_u]Love[/name_u] it! Prefer the nickname [name_u]Sasha[/name_u].

[name_f]Serafina[/name_f] “[name_f]Sera[/name_f]” - Beautiful. I love this spelling, too. It makes me think of mermaids :)/

[name_f]Zephyrine[/name_f] “[name_f]Zee[/name_f]” - This one is definitely cool and unusual. I like the nickname [name_f]Zee[/name_f]. I stumble a bit on the pronunciation, though.

I’ve known about this name for a long time and never noticed the areola connection. I think most people don’t.

I pronounce it Oh-RELL-ee-a (I guess #4). That said, I think #1 is beautiful, and if someone told me to pronounce it like that, I would.

I never would have made the connection with areola, and I doubt kids will. I pronounce [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f] (Uh-[name_u]RAY[/name_u]-lee-ah)

I don’t see how it’s any closer to Areola than [name_f]Ariella[/name_f] is. [name_f]Aurelia[/name_f]'s lovely. I say it as Aw-rell-ee-ah.
