The Casson Family names

I was just reminded of the [name_m]Casson[/name_m] Family books by [name_f]Hilary[/name_f] McKay. Each follows a different child in the same family. Their mother, [name_f]Eve[/name_f], is a painter and each of the kids are named after a different paint color:

Cadmium “Caddy”
[name_f]Saffron[/name_f] “Saffy”
[name_f]Indigo[/name_f] (the only boy)
[name_f]Rose[/name_f]

I remember thinking these names were so cool when I was a kid. I still think Cadmium is really interesting, and I love Saffy, [name_f]Indigo[/name_f], and [name_f]Rose[/name_f].

Questions for you:

  1. What do you think of the [name_m]Casson[/name_m] family names?
  2. If you were their mother and wanted to use paint colors, what colors would you use for three girls and a boy?
  3. What names might you use if you had to name three girls and a boy in a way that referenced your job, passion, or hobby?

I loved those books! Cadmium was called [name_f]Magenta[/name_f] “Maggie” in my translation. (Do you remember Rose’s full name, the one that caused a hubbub when her father found out what [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is short for? In my version it was Permanentrosa.)

I think it’s interesting that the names got easier/more namey with each child. I feel like in real life parents tend to get more adventurous.

my own color family: [name_f]Scarlett[/name_f], [name_f]Amber[/name_f], [name_f]Sky[/name_f] [name_m]Blue[/name_m] & [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
my job family (maths): [name_f]Anova[/name_f], [name_f]Infinity[/name_f], Vector & [name_f]Lemma[/name_f]
my hobby family (writing): [name_f]Hero[/name_f], [name_f]Novella[/name_f], [name_m]Anthem[/name_m] & Poesie

I was going to say Cadmium is the most out there but with a cool nickname. However upon finding out Rose’s full name is Permanent [name_f]Rose[/name_f], I’d say her full name is the most unique but has the most standard nickname.
[name_m]The[/name_m] simple [name_f]Rose[/name_f] is my personal favorite but [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] is my favorite for others

My own color names for 3 girls, 1 boy
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f] nn Sapphy or Phira
[name_f]Ivory[/name_f]

Full list if number of children were unlimited

[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] (g)
[name_f]Ivory[/name_f] (u)
[name_m]Cyan[/name_m] (b)
[name_f]Coral[/name_f] (g)
[name_f]Amber[/name_f] (g)
[name_m]Silver[/name_m] (u)
[name_f]Emerald[/name_f] (b)
[name_f]Sapphire[/name_f] (g)
[name_f]Olive[/name_f] (u, prefer g)

[name_f]Phoenicia[/name_f] (g)
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] (g unless short for Rosendel or [name_m]Rosario[/name_m])
[name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (u but if short for Ivander then only b)

My career is medicine:

[name_f]Valeria[/name_f] (means strength and healthy)
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] (means heart)
[name_m]Apollo[/name_m] (god of medicine and healing)
[name_f]Isadora[/name_f] (Gift of [name_f]Isis[/name_f], the goddess of healing, fertility, and restoration of life)

[name_m]Can[/name_m] also swap them for the other gender (Valerian, [name_f]Apollonia[/name_f] or [name_f]Apolline[/name_f], [name_m]Isidore[/name_m])

If need to be actual words in medicine, it’s a bit tricky as most sound bad or weird if you know what they are. How about:
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] (fever)
Soleus (b)
Adenine

Also considered melanin (b) and Allele (g)

If we don't care about what the words mean

Yersinia
[name_f]Candida[/name_f] “Candy”
[name_f]Melena[/name_f]
Chlamydia “Lydia”
Rubella

[name_m]Will[/name_m] also try notable pioneers in medicine but I don’t care for most of their names so let’s see if I can find four that I like enough
[name_f]Kelsey[/name_f] (Frances Oldham [name_f]Kelsey[/name_f])
[name_f]Helen[/name_f] (Taussig)
[name_m]Alexander[/name_m] (Fleming) or [name_f]Nightingale[/name_f] (Florence) for the boy
[name_f]Rosalind[/name_f] “Rose” (Franklin)

One of my hobbies is gardening edibles but most that I like lean boy to me other than [name_f]Apple[/name_f]:
[name_m]Basil[/name_m], Oregano, Parsley, [name_f]Sage[/name_f], [name_m]Kale[/name_m], [name_f]Apple[/name_f], [name_m]Huckleberry[/name_m].
How about
Parsley (g)
[name_f]Sage[/name_f] (g)
[name_m]Basil[/name_m] (b)
[name_f]Apple[/name_f]

If we expand to any flower or plant:
[name_f]Azalea[/name_f]
[name_f]Sakura[/name_f]
[name_m]Oleander[/name_m]
[name_f]Lunaria[/name_f]

Would also consider [name_f]Holly[/name_f] (g), [name_f]Rose[/name_f] (g), [name_f]Ivy[/name_f] (u), [name_f]Sequoia[/name_f] (u), [name_m]Oakley[/name_m] (u), [name_m]Florian[/name_m] (b), [name_f]Willow[/name_f] (b)

What do you think of the Casson family names?

I think the sisters are a great fit together and don’t feel overly thematic because of the botanical associations. I like all three. Cadmium is a very bold choice, although the sound feels surprisingly adjustable for human use – similiar to Caedman, Callum, Camden and Damien to name a few. I just think it’s on another level to the sisters.

If you were their mother and wanted to use paint colors, what colors would you use for three girls and a boy?

I think I’d take into consideration what colours I’m most drawn to as well as the sound of the names themselves. So with that in mind, I’m going with…

[name_m]Viridian[/name], [name_f]Ochre[/name], [name_f]Marine[/name] & [name_f]Violet[/name] :artist_palette:

What names might you use if you had to name three girls and a boy in a way that referenced your job, passion, or hobby?

For reading and writing…

[name_f]Lore[/name], [name_f]Poem[/name], [name_f]Quill[/name] & [name_m]Pace[/name] :feather:

I always thought the names were cool – Cadmium does stand out for it’s rarity while [name_f]Rose[/name_f] feels surprisingly tame! I do like nn Caddy and [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] and [name_f]Indigo[/name_f] are my faves

Going bold, I’d go with…

[name_f]Magenta[/name_f] “Mattie”
[name_f]Vermillion[/name_f] “Milla”
[name_m]Ochre[/name_m] “Oaks”
[name_m]Cerulean[/name_m] “Cece”

If I were to use names that reference my job / hobbies…

[name_f]Suvi[/name_f] [name_f]Roisin[/name_f] [name_f]Briar[/name_f]
[name_f]Acacia[/name_f] [name_f]Angharad[/name_f]
[name_m]Evander[/name_m] [name_m]Tadhg[/name_m]
[name_f]Sarai[/name_f] [name_f]Endellion[/name_f] [name_f]Neve[/name_f]

(Chosen based on the letters of acronyms i use at work as it was hard to think of names relating to the job!)

[name_f]Ginevra[/name_f]
[name_f]Katri[/name_f]
[name_m]Ozias[/name_m]
[name_f]Lux[/name_f]
