[name]Just[/name] how usable are goddess names? [name]Both[/name] our girls have the [name]Roman[/name] vesrions of Greek goddesses in their names. It’s a tradition we’d like to continue. Some of my favorites:
[name]Athena[/name]
[name]Artemis[/name] ([name]Thea[/name] is a great nn for both)
[name]Hero[/name]
[name]Phaedra[/name]
[name]Freja[/name] (super popular in AUS and UK)
[name]Do[/name] these carry too much weight in their original forms? Any others you might suggest?
Personally, I love [name]Phaedra[/name]. Beautiful but not too popular.
I love greek mythology! which is why my dog’s name is [name]Athena[/name] so that’s really all I can associate it with But for [name]Artemis[/name] you could use [name]Diana[/name] which is the roman version. Personally, I think [name]Diana[/name] is a lovely, elegant, and classic name.
What are your other daughter’s names? If you don’t mind me asking
I like [name]Athena[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name] and [name]Freja[/name]… I think they are usable.
[name]Freja[/name] is popular here, though usually spelt [name]Freya[/name]. It’s very usable though not really my thing. I like [name]Athena[/name] more but its more uncommon. I like [name]Artemisia[/name] more than [name]Artemis[/name] but that could be seen as making it even clunkier.
My favourite goddess names are:
[name]Phoebe[/name]
[name]Iris[/name]
[name]Minerva[/name] (I prefer this to [name]Athena[/name])
[name]Isis[/name]
[name]Laetitia[/name]
[name]Demetria[/name]/[name]Demeter[/name]
I wouldn’t call [name]Freya[/name] super popular in Australia- isnt it like #200 in NSW?
I think its in the top 100 in Tas and Canberra tho.
[name]Phaedra[/name] and [name]Hero[/name] aren’t goddesses, just so you know I love mythology, and I planned on using one in my daughter’s name, although that didn’t happen. I tried to stay away from the major goddesses because of the associations. And there are so many demi goddesses and nymphs with beautiful names too!
[name]Roman[/name] demi-goddesses:
[name]Aurora[/name]

[name]Evadne[/name]
[name]Io[/name]
Otrera
[name]Pandora[/name]
[name]Psyche[/name]
I made a post about mythological names here, although some are pretty out there
greco-roman:
[name]Hestia[/name]
[name]Persephone[/name]
northern european:
[name]Brigid[/name]
[name]Morgan[/name] (or [name]Morrigan[/name]/ [name]Morgana[/name])
Sif
[name]Macha[/name]
Frigg or Frigga
[name]Iduna[/name]
So psyched to see [name]Freja[/name] there (and how lovely to see “my own”, Danish spelling of the name). Though if your other children have names of [name]Roman[/name]/Greek goddesses, I’d personally use another name of a [name]Roman[/name]/Greek goddess for another kid.
My own personal favourites (Greek/[name]Roman[/name]):
[name]Athena[/name]/[name]Minerva[/name]
[name]Ceres[/name]/[name]Demeter[/name]
[name]Gaia[/name] (technically not a goddess but the personification of [name]Earth[/name])
[name]Gallia[/name]
[name]Hera[/name]/[name]Juno[/name]
[name]Hestia[/name]/[name]Vesta[/name]
[name]Pomona[/name]
Some Norse Goddesses for your consideration:
[name]Eir[/name]
Frigg
Gefion
Idunn
[name]Nanna[/name]
Yerp. It’s one of those ‘every other girl’ names at the moment! Although they tend to spell it [name]Freya[/name] as someone above said. Not half as pretty as [name]Freja[/name] in my opinion.
@ottilie - yes, they are only mythological. But I like those names and want to keep my options open. I don’t want to get locked into a pattern if we don’t love our choices. For example, [name]Minerva[/name] and [name]Diana[/name] would fit perfectly, but we just don’t like them. And too bad, too. They are beautiful names. [name]Hero[/name], oh she is a challenge, has particular significance for Papa Owlett and me. I just don’t think we can make it work. I’m still holding out hope for a mn… Maybe? Great lists! I am particularly fond of [name]Ione[/name]. I’m pleased to see she’s a nymph!
@bettydogooder - I suppose my definition of “super popular” is a broad one. I feel any name 200 and below is pretty popular It’s not a bad thing, though I do cringe when IEEE certain names creeping up the charts. I was just saying that it’s more familiar in other English-speaking countries, then here. Yet.
@shivbziks - I prefer the [name]Freja[/name] spelling, too. Same with [name]Sonja[/name]. [name]Freja[/name] has been on my favorites list since before baby #1, but Papa Owlett said “No goddesses!” Then he goes and picks [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Irene[/name]. Silly boys.
So Eupheme/ [name]Euphemia[/name] has promise! [name]Effie[/name] is a family name.
[name]Aura[/name], too, as [name]Aurelia[/name] is one of our favorites.
I’ll ruminate on those for a while while I scope out @Moonkai’s post!
Thanks!
Lotis- a water nymph and daughter of [name]Poseidon[/name]. She was changed into a [name]Lotus[/name] tree
[name]Pallas[/name]- daughter of Triton but [name]Zeus[/name] raised her so she and [name]Athena[/name] grew up like sisters
[name]Clio[/name]- a muse. Had a son named [name]Hyacinth[/name]
Rhode- a nymph water
Calyce “cal-lee-see”- a mortal woman
[name]Athena[/name], [name]Phaedra[/name], and [name]Freja[/name] are usable. [name]Hero[/name] is a very poor idea imo, and not for the goddess connection. [name]Artemis[/name] is usable too, but more obviously myth connected. I also fail to see the connection to [name]Thea[/name] from [name]Artemis[/name].
