Are the initials BM unusable because of its other acronym use???
We are the alphabetters,[name_f]Carol[/name_f] and [name_m]David[/name_m], kids [name_f]Elena[/name_f], [name_f]Felicity[/name_f] and [name_m]Archer[/name_m]. If we ever had another child, (debatable) we would want to fill in the B. Except, I just realized the initials would be BM. Too gross???
Right, middle name would start with P, so it would be BPM which has nice heart tones. But has anyone been in situations where you just put your first and last initials, or is there always the choice to add the middle??
[name_f]Do[/name_f] people outside of the medical field generally make the connection? I used to be as weary of the initials BM (and [name_u]BO[/name_u], lol) as BJ, but my mom is in the medical field, and I wasn’t too keen on the association to body odor or human excrement, haha. But I’ve never met anyone else who was really put off by it, and I think most times you can put both initials? I have to initial things at work, but you definitely can do all three initials. Most people only do first and last, though. I may go to all three initials, just because there’s another AR there. haha.
I wouldn’t be too worried about BM, but if he did go into the medical field, it might be unfortunate.
I’ve always had the option to add whatever initials I want. (Full, first and last, sometimes just my first). Coming from someone who looks at names all day for work, average people couldn’t care less what someone’s initials are. They just want to deal with whatever is going on in their lives and are usually too busy to focus on stuff like that. I have a coworker whose initials were A.S.S. and he absolutely loved it. No one at work could have cared less one way or another.
Lol yeah my mom is a nurse, so BM is common everyday language to me for bowel movement Lol, even my hubby knew right away what BM stands for, which is why I wondered how far spread it is. And I think, within police circles, BM is black male! Which we aren’t! Sigh
I guess I’m torn, part of me wants to fill in that B with another beautiful boy if possible, the other part of me is saying vasectomy!!!
My brother’s initials are BM and my dad is a doctor. I can’t remember a single instance growing up when it came up. I don’t think anyone pays attention honestly, and he just used his middle initial too.
I literally had no idea what BM could even refer to until you said it! I’m pretty sure hardly anyone would notice, especially if he had a middle initial too.
I had no idea what you were referring to and I spend a lot of time in/around hospitals/using medical terms (multiple medical issues myself and job related).
I thought you were meaning in relation to bottom!
My friend has these initials and the only time it ever gave us a laugh was when he said his parents were seriously considering giving him the middle name Ulysees to specifically spell out B.U.M with his full initials.
There are way too many things to worry in life about and this isn’t one of them!
e.g. my maiden initials were KF which is the symbol for chemical compound potassuim floride (just googled - never once came up in my life) and my married initials are KR (never been an issue that someone thinks I haven’t signed off an email properly as this is a common abbreviation for Kind Regards!)
My husbands initials are BM and I didn’t even realize the connection until I started reading this post. As far as I know, it hasn’t ever come up. And his parents are both in the medical field… My sister in law is dating a guy with the initials BJ right now, and he prefers for people to call him BJ over his full name. If he can survive in this day and age as a BJ, I’m sure BM is fine.
I think it’s fine…I wouldn’t worry about it too much. [name_m]How[/name_m] often do you have to write your initials anyway? By the way, I love your kids’ names!!!
The only times I’ve ever encountered BM as an acronym have been in medical/professional caregiving settings. I kind of doubt a lot of the general population would notice.
To answer another question above, I find I use just my first and last initials a lot more often than my first, middle and last, although probably there are times when I could throw in my middle and it wouldn’t be a problem (which BPM might be inclined to do).
M is a pretty common last initial, so I’m sure there are lots of people with those initials out there.
I grew up with the initials BM (full initials BKM) and not one person has ever made that connection (not even my parents when selecting my name). I made that connection when I was older, but got over it and wasn’t something that has bothered me. I grew up just fine and have never been teased about it.
It is something I worry about from time to time, but honestly I don’t think it matters. I have a friend who’s birth name is [name_u]James[/name_u] [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] (goes by “[name_m]Ben[/name_m]”). [name_u]Story[/name_u] goes that his parents originally wanted to name [name_m]Benjamin[/name_m] [name_u]James[/name_u] but due to their last name starting with ‘M’ they were worried about the whole ‘bowel movement’ association (neither of his parents work in the medical field). Then they were worried about his first and middle name being “BJ”. I think maybe some people will notice it, though I hope they have enough tact to keep it to themselves. People aren’t going to actively think if nothing person’s initials spell out anything. If you want to give your child a name that starts with ‘B’ I say go for it.
