The Magical Bewitching Ones (Norwegian Style)

[name_m]Hi[/name_m]!

This is my first post, and although I could write for miles about my problem (I did in my first take), I’m gonna keep it short(-ish) and simple.

  • I need some new names on my list because almost all of the ones I have feels like middles.
  • I absolutely want the names to have wonderful meanings or history.
  • I will be using two middles.
  • and here’s the kicker: I am Norwegian (ta-da), so the names need to sound good in Norwegian! This is what makes it hard for me. I can’t go all out with my style, cause then my family, not to mention my boyfriends Swedish family, won’t be able to pronounce it…

So, yeah. This is my list so far.

[name_f]Allegra[/name_f]
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] (means" like a hawk". My brother’s name is Hauk. It’s a Norse name, and the Norwegian word for hawk)
[name_f]Christine[/name_f] (my sisters middle)
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] (boyfriends pick)
[name_f]Clea[/name_f]
[name_f]Clemency[/name_f]
Fredrikke (fred-RIKK-eh)
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermione[/name_f] (I do feel I NEED a HP- name, and this is the only one bf would accept, not that I’m complaining)
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (this is one of the two I do feel works as a fn)
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
Leonorah (my sister is [name_f]Nora[/name_f]. Would love to honor that crazy firefly)
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] (again, boyfriends pick)
[name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
Symre (SYM-reh. Norwegian flower. This is the second one I feel works as a fn)
Thale ([name_u]TAL[/name_u]-eh. Norwegian. I do love the “tale” part of it. Could work as a fn??)
[name_f]Violetta[/name_f] (My favorite band has a series of songs based on this name)

The only one I feel I could use if a child popped out today is:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] [name_f]Christine[/name_f]

Other ones I’ve thought about, but is like “hmmmm”:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
Symre Pheadra [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
Thale [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
Thale Leonorah [name_f]Odette[/name_f]

So, throw’em at me, people. You could make combos, suggest new names, convince me either way on those I have- you basically have free rains. And if you have a perfect name, but don’t know how it will work in Norwegian- just include it anyways! My family sort of expect me to choose a somewhat rare name- I’m their eccentric.

  • [name_f]Pernille[/name_f].

[name_f]Love[/name_f] your list, obviously. We’re name sisters.

Thale definitely works as a first name! I know one actually, and I think it’s a beautiful name. And are you a Kaizers fan? I love their [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] songs.

I’m going to come back later with suggestions, but the first one I thought about was Vivendel. Beautiful flower and a gorgeous name. Then Venevil and Ylajali as they’re big Norwegian literary names.

The only ones I don’t like as first names are [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] and [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]. Too difficult in Norwegian. Would you consider [name_f]Hermine[/name_f] instead? Anyway, I’ll go through my list and I’ll come up with suggestions in a bit.

I don’t know how to direct this to you, [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], but it is! I am a major Kaizers fan! And I like the idea of having their songs to use as pointers at various stages of my child life. If they have a nightmare: “Drøm videre, [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]”. If they drink too much (crossing my fingers for a child allergic to alcohol, but if my teens are any reference I think not…): “Aldri mer vodka, [name_f]Violetta[/name_f]”. Haha, I know this is dorky, but I would have laughed if it had been done to me.

I did suggest [name_f]Hermine[/name_f] to my boyfriend first, but since they don’t translate the names in the Swedish books, he just thought it was silly. (You should have been here for the great “Dumbledore/ Humlesnurr- tantrum”) As I have read the books in both Norwegian and English (a million gazillion times) it wasn’t a big deal for me. I might pronounce it like the Norwegians do anyway, I don’t know yet…

Vivendel is so cute! But it also feels like a middle to me… I don’t know why I’m so difficult with firsts.
Thank you so much for this and what is to come- I can’t wait. You are my naming hero!

I love quite a few of your names! Here are some of my favourites of your choices:
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Arwen[/name_f] - beautiful, literary name.
[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] - gorgeous, unique and love the personal significance.
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (this is one of the two I do feel works as a fn)
[name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Odette[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
Symre
Thale - though these last two are definitely a bit more challenging in English, they are lovely in Norwegian.

I happen to know of some Scandinavian names, and I like these: [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], [name_f]Nessa[/name_f], [name_f]Birgit[/name_f], [name_f]Else[/name_f], [name_u]Dagny[/name_u].

Here are some combos:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]
Thale [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Birgit[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Birgit[/name_f] [name_f]Astrid[/name_f]
Thale [name_f]Juliette[/name_f] [name_f]Else[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] [name_u]Dagny[/name_u]
Thale [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
Thale [name_f]Astrid[/name_f] [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Nessa[/name_f]
Symre [name_u]Dagny[/name_u] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]

I love;

[name_f]Clara[/name_f]
[name_f]Genevieve[/name_f]
[name_f]Juliet[/name_f]

[name_m]Hi[/name_m] [name_f]Pernille[/name_f]! I have a very soft spot for both [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] and [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]. Symre is intriguing, very pretty! Hadn’t heard that one before. [name_f]Hermine[/name_f] is such a beautiful name. [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] is starting to grow on me…

Symre [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] Symre [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Hermine[/name_f] [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] Vivendel [name_f]Filippa[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] Fredrikke

… I don’t know how good they turned out, but I really like your options:)

Suggestions: Villemo, Ysaline, [name_f]Cassiopeia[/name_f], [name_f]Eloise[/name_f], [name_f]Anemone[/name_f]

@bibliophile. Thank you for listing your loves. It feels good to know they just don’t sound good in my head. Sadly, nearly all your suggestions are considered dated here in Norway… But my bf actually loves [name_f]Astrid[/name_f], so I might grow to love that one. You make gorgeous combos! I especially like:
Symre [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Juliette[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] (Symre [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f])
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]

Ps. I saw the name Enjolras in your signature and just died. I [name_f]LOVE[/name_f] him. [name_f]Share[/name_f] the courage to use him, please.

@boyandgirl. Thank you! My boyfriend will be pleased to see some [name_f]Clara[/name_f]- love. I love [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] too! [name_f]Do[/name_f] you think I could get away with using [name_f]Ginny[/name_f] as a nn?

@svea. [name_m]Hi[/name_m]! Is Svea your actual name? I adore that, it’s so sweet and charming. Symre is so beautiful when my boyfriend say it in Swedish, so I’m not surprised you love it! And you make fantastic combos! I love them all, they made me realize that the names actually are usable as first. Thank you! I especially adore:
[name_f]Hermine[/name_f] [name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] Vivendel [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] (bf demands the ph-)

I also love the suggestion of Villemo, but my stupid bf has vetoed both that and the ever so cute Hillevi.

Suggestions:

[name_f]Adara[/name_f]
Alvilde
[name_f]Apolline[/name_f]
[name_f]Aurora[/name_f] (I know this is popular, but I think [name_f]Aurora[/name_f] shines at her best in Norwegian and Swedish)

[name_f]Tindra[/name_f]
[name_f]Tuva[/name_f]
[name_f]Tyra[/name_f]
[name_u]Vega[/name_u]
[name_u]Vesper[/name_u] (I saw a birth announcement for twins [name_f]Bella[/name_f] and [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] in Afterposten once and I was surprised how well [name_u]Vesper[/name_u] works in Norwegian)
Ylva
[name_f]Zelda[/name_f]

No, I’m actually a [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] I’m glad that you like them. Hillevi is such a great name, what a shame that he doesn’t like it! [name_f]Hedvig[/name_f], [name_f]Ingela[/name_f], Alvhilde, [name_f]Vendela[/name_f], [name_f]Elfrida[/name_f]? I also have a soft spot for names like [name_f]Ingeborg[/name_f] and [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f], but have no idea how they’re perceived in Norway;)

@ottilie. Oh, over half your list is names I would love to use, but can’t. I need to know less people. The new ones I loved from your list, (Ivalo, [name_f]Zelda[/name_f], [name_u]Vesper[/name_u], Lerke, Éowyn, [name_f]Adara[/name_f]), made my boyfriend make the weirdest face. I swear, if it was up to him our child would be named [name_f]Angelica[/name_f] or [name_f]Annabelle[/name_f]… I love the [name_u]Vesper[/name_u]/ [name_f]Bella[/name_f] twins. I actually know a twin couple named [name_f]Eira[/name_f] and [name_f]Tyra[/name_f]. I think it’s so darling. Thank you so much for your input and please; keep’em coming if you think of some more.

@svea. [name_f]Sarah[/name_f] is a beautiful name too! Funny though, my bf’s grandmother is Svea and his sister is [name_f]Sara[/name_f], haha. I do not know what his deal is, he is the weirdest guy ever. I do love [name_f]Ingeborg[/name_f] but my best friend has dibs on it and again- bf hates [name_f]Sunniva[/name_f]. This man will be my end…

I love a lot of the names you have listed. [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] (prefer it spelled [name_f]Amedea[/name_f], but [name_f]Amadea[/name_f] is lovely all the same), [name_f]Arwen[/name_f], [name_f]Clara[/name_f], [name_f]Clea[/name_f] (which, dare I say, sounds terrific in Norwegian), Fredrikke (again, I prefer Frederikke which is the Danish spelling, but Fredrikke is lovely as well), [name_f]Isolde[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Odette[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Philippa[/name_f] and Symre (had never heard this one before, it’s gorgeous!). Thale

[name_m]Just[/name_m] some quick combinations:

[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Clea[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Clea[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]

Thale [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
Thale [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]

These are mainly just Scandinavian-inspired shots in the dark and most of them are rather old-fashioned:

Bjørg
[name_f]Dagmar[/name_f]

I don’t know how but this became extremely long, pardon me

@shvibziks. Please don’t apologize for the length! This was a joy reading through! I adore your combos, especially:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Clea[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]
Symre Fredrikke [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f]
Symre [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] (made my heart skip a beat!)
Thale [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Philippa[/name_f]

I am intrigued with the idea of spelling it [name_f]Amedea[/name_f]. It’s truly gorgeous and it’s not as “a-ed” as [name_f]Amadea[/name_f]. I’m gonna think about it! Also, thank you for the [name_f]Clea[/name_f] comment! I was actually quite worried about it because in m dialect we say “klea” meaning “the clothes” and we have a thick “l” so it’s really not attractive. I think if people use the prettier thin “l” it’s not gonna be a problem! I am so happy about all the love Symre is getting!! I’m just loving it more and more. [name_f]Do[/name_f] you speak Danish? Does it work in your language too?

Lastly, thank you so much for your suggestions! I have the same thing to say to you as to [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]- I know so many with names you have mentioned, so I can’t use them even though I would love to! I am gonna show some new ones to my bf though! [name_m]Cross[/name_m] your fingers for me!

This was the longest response ever, haha. Now I’m the one saying sorry. I just have to mention: I see [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] Ivalo Alatáriel in your signature- oh, my god, that name is to die for!!! It literally made me smile of joy!

[name_f]Lovely[/name_f] list! [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] is the one I love best!
I love the meaning behind [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]. Her nickname could be [name_u]Story[/name_u].
I am not good at making combos. I will just suggest some names that might tickle your fancy. Sorry if I repeat any. There were a lot of lovely suggestions already.

[name_f]Freja[/name_f]/[name_f]Freya[/name_f]
[name_f]Linnea[/name_f]
[name_f]Sidra[/name_f]
[name_f]Sigrid[/name_f]
[name_f]Signe[/name_f]/[name_f]Signy[/name_f]
[name_f]Este[/name_f], [name_f]Estee[/name_f], Esty
[name_f]Brea[/name_f]/[name_f]Bria[/name_f]
[name_f]Thea[/name_f]
[name_u]Penna[/name_u]
Olenna
[name_f]Iva[/name_f]
[name_f]Vera[/name_f]
[name_f]Viviette[/name_f]
[name_f]Ilaria[/name_f]
[name_f]Elara[/name_f]
Eisa
[name_f]Iselin[/name_f]

@pernillemarie Sorry about the datedness of the names! I unfortunately have limited knowledge about what’s actually used up in your neck of the woods. [name_f]Glad[/name_f] you liked some of the combos.
And yes! Enjolras - I’m so glad more people like the name (and get the reference!).

Well, I don’t speak Norwegian, but I had a childhood friend named [name_f]Clea[/name_f] and to my Danish ear it sounds ravishing  I do speak Danish and I think it sound lovely in Danish as well, though most people would probably confuse it with Simre which means “to simmer”, but to be completely honest with you, Simre is a great-sounding word.

I was pretty proud of [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] Ivalo Alatáriel myself, mainly because I had an endless amount of struggles surrounding [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] + combinations

@niteowl13. I too love [name_f]Arwen[/name_f]. My bf is negative towards it, but I’ll turn him around! I adore the nn [name_u]Story[/name_u] for [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]! Thank you for your suggestions, a lot of beautiful names there!

@bibliophile. It’s sad, really, all the names you mentioned are beautiful, but they are sort of connected to old teatchers or school secretaries reaking of coffee and sigaretts. Not exactly the imagery I want to carry on to my child. But I’m so pleased they are being used in other contries! They are too pretty to go to waste.

Oh, Enjolras- my ultimate [name_m]Prince[/name_m] Charming. [name_m]Both[/name_m] my bf and I are huge fans, so it might not be impossible I get too use it (as a middle).

@shvibziks. I can live with that! [name_m]Both[/name_m] [name_f]Clea[/name_f] and Symre is climbing my list- thank you!

It’s truly a wonderful name! I know about the hardships of combomaking. I love all my names, but as I feel like they are all middles I want to use them all in one name. It will be longer than the names of Danish [name_m]Royal[/name_m] Family! Scream out if you think of a combo as gorgeous for me!

I just love these names! I wish I was Norwegian so I had an ‘excuse’ to use a lot of these :stuck_out_tongue:
Favourite combos:
[name_f]Allegra[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] [name_f]Clea[/name_f]
[name_f]Clara[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] Leonorah
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f]
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]
Best of luck!

@jem. Think you so much! And that is so weird, cause I would feel more comfortable using all of them (except Symre and Thale) if I lived in the US or UK! Where do you live and what names do you feel doesn’t work? I love your combos! Espescially:
[name_f]Isolde[/name_f] [name_f]Violetta[/name_f] [name_f]Soleil[/name_f]
[name_f]Phaedra[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f] [name_f]Noelle[/name_f]
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] [name_f]Arwen[/name_f] [name_f]Hermione[/name_f] (overload on the “fantasy” names?)
[name_f]Philippa[/name_f] [name_f]Genevieve[/name_f] [name_f]Astoria[/name_f]

Chesten is Cornish for [name_f]Christine[/name_f], thought I’d throw that out there.
What do you think of [name_f]Cornelia[/name_f] or Kornoelje?

[name_f]Astoria[/name_f] - beautiful. I would not use it in the U.S. so you are lucky.
[name_f]Amadea[/name_f] & [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] are very beautiful.
