Siblings named [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m] ([name_u]Max[/name_u]), [name_f]Annika[/name_f] ([name_f]Annie[/name_f]), and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m] ([name_u]Theo[/name_u]).
I’m totally crushing on the ‘Merit’ names right now. And the nickname ‘[name_f]Merri[/name_f]’ or ‘[name_f]Mari[/name_f]’ is super cute.
(For ease of use, all would be pronounced the same, i.e. ‘Merit’.)
Which spelling do you prefer and why?
Merit - derived from Ancient Egyptian meaning ‘beloved’ AND a Puritan virtue name meaning ‘worthiness/value.’
[name_u]Merritt[/name_u] - English surname. Not as interesting a name history, but still with the ‘Merit’ sound while looking more like a name. [name_f]May[/name_f] also consider Merrit.
[name_f]Marit[/name_f] - Northern European form of [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], and name of the Norwegian Crown [name_f]Princess[/name_f].
[name_u]Maret[/name_u] - ? Northern European form of [name_f]Martha[/name_f]? (Which is my late mother’s name - but, really, I could see any of the forms of ‘Merit’ being an honor name for my mother.)
(Other names we’re considering include [name_f]Verity[/name_f], [name_f]Rebekah[/name_f], and [name_f]Katrina[/name_f].)
I’m partial to [name_f]Marit[/name_f]… I love the Norwegian Crown [name_f]Princess[/name_f], she’s so beautiful, kind and smart. Merit would be second, but I think [name_f]Marit[/name_f]'s much more beautiful.
Merit because it is a wonderful virtue name. Perhaps the only way I could find a virtue name word I like better would to somehow find something that means “integrity” but is wearable.
I like Merit the best. Short, sweet and to the point. I understand wanting to use [name_u]Maret[/name_u] because maybe the “a” makes it slightly more feminine, but to me [name_u]Maret[/name_u] looks like [name_f]Margaret[/name_f] forgot a few letters… So Merit, definitely
I love [name_u]Merritt[/name_u], Merit, and [name_f]Verity[/name_f]. I think of [name_u]Merritt[/name_u]/Merit more as a boy’s name and [name_f]Verity[/name_f] as a girl’s name. I also prefer [name_f]Verity[/name_f] with [name_m]Maxwell[/name_m], [name_f]Annika[/name_f], and [name_m]Theodore[/name_m].
I love this name! I would use Merit. It feels simplest to just use the common word spelling. It could be clarified by saying, “like the word” instead of spelling it out. I am considering using it if we have another girl. [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] Island is near where my family lives in Fl so that spelling makes it feel like a place name for me.
Another vote for the simple Merit. I love [name_f]Verity[/name_f] too. A couple of more suggestions for you-- [name_f]Constance[/name_f] or [name_f]Clemence[/name_f].
I like [name_u]Maret[/name_u] or [name_f]Marit[/name_f] the best, especially with a sister named [name_f]Annika[/name_f]. [name_m]Just[/name_m] sort of meh about Merit, and I would assume a [name_u]Merritt[/name_u] was a boy.
Merit would be my preference, but with your sibset I think [name_f]Verity[/name_f] is beautiful and fits nicely. [name_f]Verity[/name_f] [name_f]Martha[/name_f] is my suggestion.
Thanks for the input!
It’s interesting that you brought that up as I only found that spelling of the name after I had already posted.
I definately think [name_f]Meret[/name_f] has merit. Ha!
I [name_f]DO[/name_f] really like [name_f]Verity[/name_f], but for some reason the ‘y’/‘ie’ sounding ending just isn’t sitting right with me. Perhaps it’s my association with ‘y’/‘ie’ endings with nicknames?
I’m really liking that [name_u]Maret[/name_u]/[name_f]Marit[/name_f]/[name_f]Meret[/name_f] has that Northern European flavor with a sophisticated edge, but also has all the fun and flair of a virtue name (with the potential honor name for my mother thrown in there for a bit of bonus).
With the three spellings - [name_u]Maret[/name_u], [name_f]Marit[/name_f], [name_f]Meret[/name_f] - which looks/sounds best with [name_f]Annika[/name_f]?
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] and [name_u]Maret[/name_u].
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] and [name_f]Marit[/name_f].
[name_f]Annika[/name_f] and [name_f]Meret[/name_f].
[name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Merri[/name_f].
[name_f]Annie[/name_f] and [name_f]Mary[/name_f].
[name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], and [name_f]Mari[/name_f].
[name_u]Max[/name_u], [name_f]Annie[/name_f], [name_u]Theo[/name_u], and [name_f]Meri[/name_f].
