the name Bay?

I can’t make up my mind about this name. It has a lot of significance as we live right by the beach and my cousins and I spent our childhood summers every day on the beach, something I’m now doing with my kids too. I just don’t know if I like it or not, whether it’s too “out there” or not. What’s you’re opinions on it?

I definitely don’t think it’s too out there. I want to say it’s the name of one of the characters on the ABC Family show Switched at Birth, but I’m not 100% sure. It has familiarity with its closeness to [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] and it fits in nicely with other nature names out there like [name_u]River[/name_u] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u].

I think [name_u]Bay[/name_u] would be a really pretty girls name, but I would probably use it more of a middle name than a first name, just since there are no nn possibiliutes.

I don’t love it, but it could definitely work in real life. It has the same feel to it as names like [name_u]Wren[/name_u] and [name_u]Sage[/name_u]. Also, it sounds a little like [name_u]Bailey[/name_u]. It would be easily accepted on a girl or a boy.

Off hand I don’t like it, but the more I think about it the more I realize how commonly used the name is. I personally see it used as a nickname A LOT and feel really comfortable using the name. In all honesty I would use a form of [name_f]Baylie[/name_f] as the birth certificate name and use [name_u]Bay[/name_u] as the nickname, that way the child has the option to go with the nickname or to go with the more traditional name. I’m obsessed with water names as well.

[name_f]My[/name_f] son- [name_u]River[/name_u] [name_m]Cole[/name_m]
Daughter- [name_u]Laken[/name_u] [name_f]Grace[/name_f]

good luck!

I absolutely love it on both a boy and a girl. For some reason it doesn’t feel even slightly hippy to me, and I have the same lovely connotations and imagery that you do.

I think it’s too out there for a first name but would be acceptable for a middle name. [name_u]Bay[/name_u] is pronounced the same as bae which is very common slang and I’m sure your kid would get joked about because of it.

I don’t get the imagery of water with bay I get the image of a bay leaf instead. I think it is usuable as a middle but for a first name I like [name_u]Bailey[/name_u] more.

I would just use it only in the middle spot. It doesn’t have the depth and history that I look for in a first name.

I agree that it’s wearable and, as another pointed out, has the same sophistication of [name_u]Sage[/name_u] or even [name_u]Juniper[/name_u] so that it doesn’t fall immediately into hippy-dippy category (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing! [name_m]Just[/name_m] means it might be more approachable for people in general). [name_f]My[/name_f] first thought is of a bay leaf too, followed quickly by water. I don’t know why, because I live on the ocean where there are plenty of bays and coves and channels.

I actually considered this for a middle name as I was searching for a name with water significance. I also saw [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] recently in a post here. Not as direct a reference, but it’s still there.

Eh, its nothing special for me, but I dislike a lot of word names. [name_f]Bayla[/name_f] feels a lot nicer
