The names Lara and Alara

Hi nameberry friends,

What do you all think of the names Lara and Alara?
Is Lara old fashioned and out of style name?
How about Alara? How do you prnounced them? Aah laa raa or E la ra?

I am considering both names for sister to Arlo.

[name_f]Lara[/name_f] feels really stylish to me, actually! It has a pan-European feel, and the only [name_f]Lara[/name_f] I know is a sister to [name_f]Margot[/name_f], both under ten years old.

I like it more than [name_f]Alara[/name_f] - they’re both nice, but I think [name_f]Alara[/name_f] could have pronunciation issues, and it feels less sparkly and exciting to me, maybe because it reminds me of more dated names like [name_f]Alyssa[/name_f]? More importantly, I just think it’s too similar to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] to work for siblings! I’d pronounce it ah-LAH-rah.

Thanks for your opinion. I agree [name_f]Alara[/name_f] and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] are mouthful and too close.
I also like the name [name_f]Lily[/name_f] so much. The only hesitation i have is that it is too popular.

I think [name_f]Lara[/name_f] is timeless and underused, and better (less confusing) as a sibling to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u].

Imho they are both far too confusing as a sister for [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] :face_with_peeking_eye: sorry!

I’m not sure about either with [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] - feels too close/matchy maybe? But if the two if we prefer [name_f]Lara[/name_f] - it’s sophisticated and tailored, soft but confident, and I love it! [name_f]My[/name_f] cousin’s daughter is [name_f]Lara[/name_f] so that’s made me like it even more!

I would pronounce [name_f]Lara[/name_f] with the same ā€˜ar’ sound that’s in [name_u]Arlo[/name_u], and [name_f]Alara[/name_f] the same way with the A being the either the short A in apple or more like
ā€œuhā€ā€¦this is all with an [name_f]English[/name_f] accent…

It may be too close in sound to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] but I wondered if you’d like [name_f]Lyra[/name_f]? I’d use [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] and [name_f]Lara[/name_f] myself (and [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] with Lyra) but [name_f]Alara[/name_f] would sadly be too similar for me. [name_f]Alara[/name_f] is one of my favourite names everrrr!! I love the meaning. Speaking of which, I also thought of [name_u]Esca[/name_u] for you.

I know two Lara’s in their 40’s/50’s, and a couple of children with the name. I don’t find it dated.

[name_f]Lara[/name_f] is light, bright and sweet but with a quiet strength too!

[name_f]Alara[/name_f] is sort of more magical and starry - I’d pronounce it uh-lar-uh (I guess more like the first one you listed).

I love [name_f]Alara[/name_f]. [name_f]Alara[/name_f] is a water fairy in Turkish mythology.

I prefer [name_f]Lara[/name_f], she feels classic and sleek and stylish.

[name_f]Alara[/name_f] I’ve not heard before but feels a bit more modern and trendy. I don’t dislike it, though.

I’d pronounce them similar, Lah-ruh and A-lah-ruh (short A at the start of [name_f]Alara[/name_f], and I’m [name_f]British[/name_f] so think of how we say the end of pretty much any name that ends in -a, ha!)

I feel like [name_f]Alara[/name_f] is a bit too close to [name_u]Arlo[/name_u] so I’d suggest [name_f]Lara[/name_f] for you out of those.
