The names we have left over, thoughts

Don’t know what we’re having yet, but we have a boy name picked out. The girls list is pretty broad, but it’s my 5th pregnancy and not all names that I liked before hit the same. What are your thoughts when you hear:
Ottilie
Charlotte
Caroline
Rosie
Posie
Etta

Is Ottilie too “unique” and is Caroline too “grown up”?
Does one of these stand out more than the others in a good way? Middle name suggestions welcome too.

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] → sweet, vintage and sort of lacy - with cute nicknames [name_f]Tillie[/name_f], [name_m]Otto[/name_m], [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], and [name_m]Otter[/name_m]! It’s currently in the UK top 100 so not too fair to me

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] → classic, solid and timeless! Versatile nickname options too - [name_f]Lottie[/name_f], [name_m]Charlie[/name_m], [name_f]Lettie[/name_f], [name_f]Char[/name_f].

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] → classic and elegant - I don’t think it’s too grown up. It’s not my fave on the list, but nicknames [name_f]Callie[/name_f], [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_f]Caro[/name_f], [name_f]Lina[/name_f], [name_f]Coco[/name_f], [name_f]Cece[/name_f] etc make it approachable

[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] → sweet and bright and energetic

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] → cutesy but sassy, fresh and fun. It stands out a little as the most obviously nickname-y, as in, not so established as a full name yet.

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] → snappy, sweet and vintage. I like its quiet strength and style.

I like [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] personally, followed by [name_f]Etta[/name_f] and [name_f]Rosie[/name_f].

Might not be for you, but [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] would combine the elements of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], and you could call her [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] [name_f]Posie[/name_f]? [name_m]Or[/name_m] there’s [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] ‘Posie’ ‘Rosie’?

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Flora[/name_f] - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Sophie[/name_f] - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Bluebell[/name_f] - [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Faye[/name_f]

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]Delphine[/name_f] - [name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]Nadia[/name_f] - [name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]Lydia[/name_f] - [name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]Renee[/name_f]

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Leonie[/name_f] - [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Mabel[/name_f] - [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Saffron[/name_f] - [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourite from your list is [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]. It’s such a timeless name that works well for any age! I think it’s adorable on a little girl, and grows up well too.

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - pretty and delicate, feels rare and unusual (in a good way!) despite its current popularity in the UK.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - beautiful and timeless; comes with adorably classic nicknames [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_m]Charlie[/name_m].

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - classic but not too grown up at all, it feels pretty ageless to me.

[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - sweet and bubbly but a little slight as a first name(?)

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] - similar to [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]. Not my favourite, but it could work as a nickname.

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - cute, fun and surprisingly strong! Has a pleasant vintage feel.

Personally, I quite like [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f].

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - I know two girls under 5 called this so it doesn’t feel too unique to me. It’s a beautiful name with lovely NN options.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - a beautiful classic & timeless name.

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - little ‘old’ sounding for a baby IMO but on par with a lot of other names that are currently in style so it wouldn’t look out of place & you could always use a NN like [name_f]Carrie[/name_f], [name_f]Cara[/name_f], [name_f]Linny[/name_f] etc. when shes younger.

[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - personally this should be a NN for a [name_f]Rose[/name_f]- name IMO just so she has something more formal for later in life, eg. [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f], [name_f]Rosanna[/name_f], Rosamary, [name_f]Rosalba[/name_f], [name_f]Rosaura[/name_f], Rosafiere, [name_f]Rosalind[/name_f], [name_f]Rosabelle[/name_f] etc.

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] - I really Posey/Posie but I do worry it sounds to NN-ish. I’d personally go for [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] with the NN [name_f]Posie[/name_f].

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - cute & lovely name but for some reason doesn’t appeal to me.

[name_f]My[/name_f] favourites from your list would be [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] & [name_f]Posie[/name_f].

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is not as unheard of as it once was and is honestly my favorite from your list with [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] a distant second. I don’t think it’s too ‘grown up’ especially with [name_f]Linny[/name_f] or [name_m]Cary[/name_m] as nicknames.

Middles for [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f]:

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Elaine[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Rose[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Jayne[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Maren[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Francesca[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Lark[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] Verlaine
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]

Middles for [name_f]Caroline[/name_f]

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Louisa[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Mae[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Senna[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Ruby[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Gianna[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Eliza[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Odette[/name_f]

Hopefully these help

You have a very sweet style!!

I think these names fall into three different categories for me:

  1. Underused vintage

I think [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] fits well here. I love that [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] has that cutesy feel of a nickname while being a full name.

  1. Timeless classic

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] and [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] fit here. Both are strong and feminine classics that have a timeless sparkle. They feel well-loved and familiar, and yet I am always so thrilled to hear them being used.

  1. [name_f]Vintage[/name_f] nicknames

I think [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], [name_f]Posie[/name_f], and [name_f]Etta[/name_f] all fit here. They are stunning little names and yet they all pack quite a punch. They are friendly and bright, without being too over the top cutesy. I’m someone who prefers a full name for the birth certificate but this doesn’t bother you then I say go for it! You seem to have more names in this category so maybe these are more your style?

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - love the name, really like Dottie/Dot as a nickname, familiar but uncommon makes for the perfect name
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - I like it, like [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] as a nickname, very popular and just a tad boring but still one of the popular names I like hearing, ageless
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - pretty but not my fave, timeless name, will age well, don’t love any of the obvious nicknames
[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - much prefer [name_f]Rose[/name_f], [name_f]Rosalie[/name_f] or Rosalind; [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] feels too sweet and just very nicknamey to me
[name_f]Posie[/name_f] - [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] with an extra bit of sweetness but actually feels less nicknamey, just not my personal fave, not versatile enough for my liking
[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - I like this on paper but said out loud I’m not super fond of [name_f]Etta[/name_f], still a strong, retro name that feels very quirky

[name_f]My[/name_f] faves my a mile are [name_f]Posie[/name_f] and [name_f]Etta[/name_f]. They are just my style - vintage, quirky-cute and pack a punch.

Not a fan of [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] and I find it too juvenile. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is too frilly for me. [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is perfectly pleasant and inoffensive but bland.

While I’m not a fan of it myself, I’m actually really drawn to [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] for you. If the thought of having something more serious / less cutesy / nicknamey begins to sway things (wouldn’t bother me re [name_f]Posie[/name_f] & [name_f]Etta[/name_f] but I totally get why it might become a factor), this is the one I’d go for. It’s a slightly subversive classic imo - not quite fully classic & timeless like eg [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f] - a little more fun than that, with a slightly 70s retro revival thing going on, which I like. But well-trodden and familiar - just unexpected and fresh for this generation. Defs manages to swerve being dated too.

Plus [name_f]Caro[/name_f] as a nn is cool.

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - I really want to like this name… I think O names are so interesting, [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Tilly[/name_f] would be such cute nns… it’s unexpected, dainty, and strong…. Unfortunately there was a troll years ago on this site who called herself [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] and she did a lot of awful things and broke the hearts of a lot of berries. This was probably close to a decade ago, but the damage she did still sticks with me and it’s hard for me to separate [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] from that person. It’s a lovely name, and I don’t think it’s too unique at all, but I just couldn’t use it myself. I love the idea of [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]. But I personally would use [name_f]Odilia[/name_f] (which is related) or Hebrew soundalike [name_f]Odelia[/name_f] instead. But for someone without those associations, I think [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] is a great name!

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - she’s more popular than I’d like but even so, I’ve never met a Charlotte… so I would still happily use it. I adore [name_f]Lottie[/name_f] and [name_f]Lola[/name_f] as nicknames for her… [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] is one of my favorite names of all time.

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - I don’t think it’s too grown up, no! I met a cute little [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] years ago and I think it works brilliantly for a girl of all ages. I can’t get past [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] Bingley myself but it’s lovely for someone else’s baby! I love the nns [name_f]Cara[/name_f] or even Caro—I had a friend years ago from another baby name site whose name was [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] nn [name_f]Caro[/name_f] and I found it so fun. Calla/Callie is also sweet, or [name_f]Lina[/name_f]!

[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - not the biggest [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] fan, there’s only 1 [name_f]Rose[/name_f] name I’d consider using (Rosemary), but I do love hearing [name_f]Rosie[/name_f], she is so sweet.

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] - not fond of the spelling but I’m a massive fan of [name_f]Posy[/name_f]! Either by itself or as a nn for [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] or [name_f]Mariposa[/name_f].

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - not my favorite, but it suits your style well!

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f], [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f], and [name_f]Posy[/name_f] are my favorites; good luck!

Ottilie: Catchy, stylish, stands out, good caboose name (If it is a caboose) because it doesn’t settle.
Charlotte- Well established and great at any age, but there are so many of them now, that she may have 3-4 in a class.
Caroline- Beautiful classic. Not too growny. Works at any age.
Rosie- It’s sweet. She sounds like the baby of the sibs. I prefer Rosemary.
Posie- Fun name. More intriguing than Rosie but less serious.
Etta- I’ve loved Etta for a long time. My favorite on your list.

Mn-
Ottilie Madge, Ottilie Ann, Ottilie Charlotte, Ottilie Clare, Ottilie Pearl, Ottilie Sarah, Ottilie Marla, Ottilie Cosette, Ottilie Cora, Ottilie Blanche

Etta Charlotte, Etta Caroline, Etta Rosemary, Etta Jocelyn, Etta Renae, Etta Jean, Etta Millicent, Etta Beatrice, Etta Isabel, Etta Abigail

I’d certainly choose Etta, but if you’re still deciding, the following names fit your combined style-

Thea, Gemma, Rosemary, Holly, Bethany, Ivah, Natalie, Eliza, Jillian/Gillian, Romilly, Claudia, Constance, Fiona

I like your names.
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is actually one of my all time favorites

“Too unique” is something that you’ll have to decide yourself. I can’t really answer that without knowing where you live and how “out there” you’re comfortable with. But a lot of people come here looking for unique names on purpose, they’re oddly kind of popular right now. [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] isn’t that hard to say or spell, but it’s also not that familiar (at least in the US where I am) so you might have to spell it out for people or explain it some of the time.

“Too grown up” isn’t really a problem in my opinion, she’s hopefully going to be an adult a lot longer than she’s a kid, after all. If you mean like, is it so dated/old ladyish that it’s hard to picture on a child, I’d say no, it isn’t. [name_f]Caroline[/name_f] is a classic name I can picture equally on all age groups.

Some combos of these names that I like:
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Posie[/name_f]
[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f]
[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]
[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] [name_f]Etta[/name_f]

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] stands out the most. It’s cute, short, yet refined and would age well with the child. It’s a fun nickname yet a full name at the same time. It’s uncommon but familiar. This would be my choice of your list.

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]May[/name_f]
[name_f]Posie[/name_f] [name_f]Claire[/name_f]

[name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] - It’s hard to find names that are cutesy YET mature, but I think [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] does it well. It’s the right amount of unique.

[name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] - It’s sweet, but too popular. If you love it, however, I wouldn’t let it dissuade me from using it.

[name_f]Caroline[/name_f] - Not at all grown up! I think it’s similar to [name_f]Charlotte[/name_f] although I feel [name_f]Carolina[/name_f] could give it a youthful touch.

[name_f]Rosie[/name_f] - Could work as a middle name or nickname.

[name_f]Posie[/name_f] - Not too fond of it.

[name_f]Etta[/name_f] - [name_f]Lovely[/name_f]! Some may find it dated but I think it’s quite charming. If paired with a nature middle, say [name_f]Etta[/name_f] [name_f]Willow[/name_f], I think it is quite beautiful.

Thank you! I really really love [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] but my pause with the name is the “uniqueness”… It’s great to know it’s actually trending!

The other thing is, I realize it’s pronounced Oh-TILL-ee-a in [name_m]German[/name_m]. I pronounce it Ott-illee, like [name_f]Natalie[/name_f]. Would it be wrong of me to use the name and pronounce this way?

Thank you!

Thank you! [name_f]Glad[/name_f] to know that [name_f]Ottilie[/name_f] isn’t super unheard of or out there!
Yes, these absolutely help!

tbh, how you pronounce it is the way most people where I am pronounce it so :person_shrugging:
