The perfect old-fashioned name for a modern girl

Hey all, I recently found out I’m due with my first baby in [name_f]October[/name_f]! I’ve managed to whittle down my list of girl names to 27 (all SO approved). Could you give me some feedback? Ranking, rating, comments, suggestions, combo pairing, whatever you like!

I really love old-fashioned names but I do wonder how they will sound on a little girl today. Our top choice is [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]. It’s an honor name but I also love [name_m]Tuck[/name_m] Everlasting and Hocus Pocus (this will be an [name_f]October[/name_f] baby after all!).

My boy list if you want to check that out

Thanks in advance!

Hello, congratulations and what an interesting list!

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Clem[/name_u] - prefer “[name_u]Clemmie[/name_u]” as a nn as think “[name_u]Clem[/name_u]” sounds a little masculine, but love the name, is on my list too

Again, really enjoyed your list and looking forward to perusing you boy names. I am in the UK so my opinions are from a British perspective if that makes a difference to you (I didn’t look if you’d listed where you’re based).

Good luck with your name hunting, when you whittle it down a little, try creating a poll, I loved polling my name ideas on here!

E x

I think most of these are fine for a girl born in the 2010s! My favorites are [name_f]Clementine[/name_f], [name_u]Eloise[/name_u], [name_f]Hazel[/name_f], [name_f]Isobel[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f], [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f], [name_f]Ramona[/name_f] and [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Some names do still feel more clunky and heavy to me, for example [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f], [name_f]Harriet[/name_f] and [name_f]Winifred[/name_f], but their nicknames make them very much wearable imo. The only ones I really can’t picture as a first name are [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]… I do think they would make for wonderfully quirky middle names!

Please do [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]!!! It’s one of my very favorites. It is so spunky and old fashioned but with the cutest modern sounding nicknames. Your whole lost is great, your SO sounds awesome. So many of these names were turned down by my husband haha. My other favorites are: [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f], [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] and [name_f]Ramona[/name_f]. Good luck.

From your list I love:
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f]
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]

On usability…
I know vintage names are often considered girly, but I’ve always found them amazingly versatile. I could see [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] sitting, with perfect posture, at a state dinner. I could also picture her in a t-shirt climbing a tall tree faster than any of her friends, not caring that there’s a new hole in her jeans. Neither imagery feels wrong. I feel like any name seen as especially girly, like [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] or [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] could be, would be ironically cool on a tomboy. To me that makes vintage names much more usable as I wouldn’t expect the girl to conform to a particular personality type. If [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] liked to wear tutus to kindergarten and play formal tea party with her dolls, her name fits the personality. If [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] refused to wear a skirt or touch anything pink, her name fits the personality. I do think, as many berries would agree, that you could potentially receive some snarky comments if you announce your choice to use a vintage name that people see as dated, but opinions will change once they see your darling little girl wearing it! If it’s a vintage name that’s already currently popular, then fantastic! Anyone who continues to be rude about your name choice is likely holding a grudge that has little to do with names.

I have always loved your combo [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Hazel[/name_f]! Other ideas (consider any repeats as ideas I second):

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Violet[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]
[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] [name_f]Matilda[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] [name_f]Pearl[/name_f]
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]
[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] [name_f]Primrose[/name_f]

I love [name_f]Pearl[/name_f] and [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] as firsts, too, but with the names I chose from your list I thought they flowed better as middles.

It’s probably obvious, but my absolute favorite is [name_f]Winifred[/name_f]. It’s so beautiful and classic! It feels like it could be tailored to any little girl’s personality with the right middle name while still being a distict, non-generic choice. Although I love the idea of a [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] called by her full name, nickname options include [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] and [name_u]Freddie[/name_u], or [name_u]Win[/name_u] or [name_m]Fred[/name_m] if you prefer a one syllable nickname.

[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] or no nn: love this. [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] is such a pretty name, especially in full and not with the nickname [name_f]Addie[/name_f]. [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is also very pretty, but I’m not sure if it’s intuitive as a nickname.

[name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f]: [name_f]Beatrice[/name_f] is a little too plain for my taste, but I like [name_f]Bea[/name_f] a lot.

[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] nn [name_f]Bea[/name_f]: Really cute. The -x ending makes [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] much more youthful sounding.

[name_f]Clementine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Clem[/name_u]: This is cute. I don’t know if it would suit absolutely everyone the way [name_f]Bea[/name_f] or [name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] would.

[name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] nn [name_f]Delia[/name_f]?: Not a fan of the nickname “[name_f]Delia[/name_f]” but [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f] in full is beautiful. [name_f]Cora[/name_f] is my favorite nickname for [name_f]Cordelia[/name_f].

[name_f]Daisy[/name_f]: I love the name [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]. It’s so sweet and pretty. It feels timeless and is one of the few names that is a bit ‘cutesy’ but actually ages well.

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]: I love this! [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] ages really nicely and the nickname [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f] is adorable. I can see this suiting a variety of personalities.

[name_f]Frances[/name_f] nn [name_u]Frankie[/name_u]: [name_f]Frances[/name_f] is a decent name, but it doesn’t really compare to your other options, in my opinion.

[name_f]Greta[/name_f]: I like [name_f]Greta[/name_f] as a middle name. I think it’s sort of a “love it or hate it” type of name so might be a bit burdensome as a first name.

[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] nn [name_f]Hattie[/name_f]: not a fan of this.

[name_f]Hazel[/name_f]: I like this name. It sounds very amiable and friendly.

[name_f]Ida[/name_f]: Not a fan of this.

[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] nn Idgie: I don’t know about “Idgie” as a nickname but [name_f]Imogen[/name_f] is very pretty.

[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] - middle only: I love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] as a middle name. [name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] works nicely.

[name_f]Josephine[/name_f] nn [name_u]Jo[/name_u]/[name_u]Joey[/name_u]: I like this. I don’t feel too strongly about it, though. I’ve always thought [name_f]Josephine[/name_f] makes a nice middle name.

[name_u]June[/name_u]: Really pretty name but I think works better as a middle. It feels sort of sparse for a first name.

[name_f]Louise[/name_f] nn [name_u]Lou[/name_u]/[name_f]Lulu[/name_f]: Not a huge fan of this in comparison to [name_u]Eloise[/name_u]. [name_f]Louise[/name_f] feels much more plain.

[name_f]Mae[/name_f]: Pretty, but same as [name_u]June[/name_u].

[name_u]Marion[/name_u] nn [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] (SO doesn’t love [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] so much though): I don’t like [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] either. It means “granny” in [name_m]French[/name_m] so feels a little strange on a little girl.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f]: [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is a decent name. I don’t personally find it pretty but I like the [name_m]Roald[/name_m] Dahl association.

[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - middle only: [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] would be gorgeous.

[name_f]Pearl[/name_f]: I love the name [name_f]Pearl[/name_f], but it does remind me of the [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Letter.

[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] nn Prim: “Prim” just reminds me of “prim and proper.” [name_f]Primrose[/name_f] is pretty, though, especially as a middle name.

[name_f]Ramona[/name_f]: Reminds me of the book series, which is nice. It has sort of a pleasing sound and I like the meaning.

[name_f]Rose[/name_f] nn [name_f]Rosie[/name_f]: I’ve always thought [name_f]Rosie[/name_f] is a very cute name. [name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] would be gorgeous.

[name_f]Violet[/name_f]: I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the name [name_f]Violet[/name_f]. Something about it is so charming to me and the sound is so pleasing and melodic.

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u]: Not a huge fan of [name_f]Winifred[/name_f] as a full name and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f] reminds me of horses.

Overall, my favorite combinations for you are:

[name_f]Violet[/name_f] [name_f]Isobel[/name_f]
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] [name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] “[name_f]Rosie[/name_f]”
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f] [name_u]Eloise[/name_u] “[name_f]Bea[/name_f]”
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] [name_f]Josephine[/name_f]

Good luck finding the perfect name. This is a great list!

[name_u]Eloise[/name_u] - I adore this name. It’s very traditional, but wouldn’t seem old fashioned, and is so sweet.
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f] -Cute! I met a girl who went by [name_f]Harrie[/name_f] with this name, and it was a good nickname for her.
[name_f]Hazel[/name_f] -This name is a word name like a lot of modern names, but has a great charm about it.
[name_f]Ida[/name_f] - This name screams classic, and I love it.
[name_f]Imogen[/name_f] - This name has always interested me. Personally to me, this name is perfect.
[name_f]Isobel[/name_f] -I love [name_f]Isobel[/name_f] so much! You might not like it if you are deterred by popularity; [name_f]Isabella[/name_f] and [name_f]Bella[/name_f] are pretty popular right now.

[name_f]Matilda[/name_f] - [name_f]Matilda[/name_f] is a wonderful name.
[name_f]Ophelia[/name_f] - Many people think the literary association is too strong, but I think this name is just perfect.
[name_f]Ramona[/name_f] - This name feels modern and traditional at the same time. I quite like it.
[name_f]Rose[/name_f] - I think we need more first name [name_f]Rose[/name_f]'s. It’s a beautiful name.

LIKE:
[name_f]Adelaide[/name_f] nn [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] or no nn - It’s pretty but might be hard to wear
[name_f]Daisy[/name_f] - [name_f]Daisy[/name_f] is great…but to me it feels like too much of a nickname.
[name_f]Frances[/name_f] nn [name_u]Frankie[/name_u] -[name_f]Frances[/name_f] has never been my cup of tea, but I like [name_u]Frankie[/name_u].
[name_f]Greta[/name_f] - I like [name_f]Greta[/name_f], but it feels a bit too much like Grate-ah to me.
[name_u]June[/name_u] - I think it needs some more oomph.
[name_f]Mae[/name_f] - It’s beautiful for a middle name.
[name_u]Marion[/name_u] nn [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] (SO doesn’t love [name_f]Mamie[/name_f] so much though) - I think [name_u]Marion[/name_u] sounds great, but there are others on your list that I love more.
[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] - Ehhhhhh…[name_f]Pearl[/name_f] is okay. It can be quite pretty depending on the wearer of the name.
[name_f]Primrose[/name_f] nn Prim - It’s a gorgeous name, but I think of the Hunger Games series when I hear it.
[name_f]Violet[/name_f] - I enjoy [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but it again feels like it’s missing something.
[name_f]Winifred[/name_f] nn [name_f]Winnie[/name_f]/[name_u]Freddie[/name_u] - I [name_u]LOVE[/name_u] the nicknames [name_u]Freddie[/name_u] and [name_f]Winnie[/name_f], but [name_f]Winnifred[/name_f] is so hard for me to love for some weird reason.

But remember, in the end, it is you and your significant other who choose the name, so please don’t take my opinion as an end all-be all. All your names are lovely, and whatever you decide will work well for a daughter.

What a great list! I love:

[name_f]Winifred[/name_f]
[name_f]Harriet[/name_f]
[name_f]Beatrix[/name_f]
[name_f]Frances[/name_f]

I love more, but those jump out right now.
