So my first thought was bi-thee-uh because I knew about the dd = th sound that @Carys1 noted. But I didn’t know that the y = uh! Very interesting.
thank you so much
I prefer [name_f]Gioia[/name_f] (had it on my list for a while) if we’re talking names that seem like [name_f]Joy[/name_f] but aren’t [name_f]Joy[/name_f], also because [name_f]Joie[/name_f] looks like [name_f]Zoie[/name_f], so like different spelling of [name_f]Zoe[/name_f] , if that makes sense?
I like it in theory, but I personally love [name_f]Joy[/name_f] as-is, and worry [name_f]Joie[/name_f] might get pronounced like [name_u]Joey[/name_u] a lot? That was my first instinct as a non-[name_u]French[/name_u] speaker.
I hadn’t thought about that!
Yes, I’m afraid you may be right
Nice when you don’t mispronounce it, so I vote “why not [name_f]Joy[/name_f]?”. I don’t think it’s pronounced [name_f]Joy[/name_f].

In [name_u]French[/name_u] it would be pronounced sort of like Jzwahh, not like [name_f]Joy[/name_f], which is what I think would cause complications, since I (a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaker) would be both confused and slightly put off by pronouncing [name_f]Joie[/name_f] like [name_f]Joy[/name_f].
Which of the following would you like to see on my girls list? (See UC for other names.)
- [name_f]Belle[/name_f]
- [name_f]Daisy[/name_f]
- [name_f]Gwen[/name_f]
- [name_f]Sylvie[/name_f]
- None of these. Keep looking!

Its more Jwwahhh then Jzwahh though
I’m also a [name_u]French[/name_u] speaker and second @rorawhale’s comment that it would be pronounced closer to jzwah (here is an audio clip I found) I also second feeling slightly put off. If you decide to pronounce it like [name_f]Joy[/name_f], I would keep it in the middle spot to avoid confusion.
I had a dream about [name_f]Elidy[/name_f] so naturally it feels very special today. I know the spelling is a little off-looking, but I think it could be warmed up to.
if...
Elidi & [name_f]Elidy[/name_f] are pronounced like “eh lih dee”
[name_f]Lydda[/name_f] is pronounced like “lih da”
- Elidi/Elidy
- Lydda
- Elidy (“[name_f]Lydda[/name_f]”)

@katkabet
I might be overestimating because the [name_u]Percy[/name_u] [name_u]Jackson[/name_u] books are such a big part of my life that any name in it is automatically tied to the books.
The book series definitely comes to mind right away with the name [name_u]Percy[/name_u], but I don’t think that the association with the books makes it unusable just because you’ve never read them.
Fwiw, I also think of The [name_f]Scarlet[/name_f] Pimpernel, so it’s not like [name_u]Percy[/name_u] is a one-person kind of name.
