There could be better names to be used in [name_f]Margaret[/name_f], [name_f]Josephine[/name_f], [name_f]Elizabeth[/name_f], and [name_f]Amy[/name_f], but as the nicknames of [name_f]Meg[/name_f], [name_u]Jo[/name_u], [name_f]Beth[/name_f], and [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is PERFECT!

If [name_u]Maria[/name_u] was pronounced MAR-yah then I could see them being similar (even then not that much) but if it’s mah-REE-ah then not at all

I just can’t not love the fact that [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is an anagram of [name_f]May[/name_f] (Louisa’s youngest sister, who the youngest is based off of in the novel). Thus… I think [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is perfect.

This isn’t necessarily directed at you so if anyone else has insight to this, I’d love to hear it.

Is [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl actually common?

Ok I’ve seen a lot of berries use [name_u]James[/name_u] as an example of a boy name being essentially unheard of on a girl to suddenly becoming common and normal on a girl but [name_u]James[/name_u] is still not popular for girls according to SSA data so am I missing something? Because I’ve been puzzled at berries using this example. After improving name collection and records around 1990, not only has [name_u]James[/name_u] never been in the top 1000 for girls as a first name in the US, but there has never been more than 100 girls named [name_u]James[/name_u] as a first name in the US per year, even after some celebrities gave their daughter the middle name [name_u]James[/name_u]. The celebrities might have caused a small brief increase in the number girls named [name_u]James[/name_u] but it really just bounces around between 25 and 80 with no clear trend of it actually becoming popular anytime soon. Maybe the celebrities helped the number of births go from hovering in the 30s to hovering in the 60s in the last 20 years but at that rate, it’s going to take a couple decades before it breaks the top 1000 (which currently needs 255 births to get on it for girls).

Thinking more about this, maybe [name_u]James[/name_u] is becoming relatively popular as a middle name? Idk where to find good data for middle name trends so I can’t see if this is where [name_u]James[/name_u] is becoming more common but it seems most people on nb who use [name_u]James[/name_u] on a girl put it in the middle spot to honor someone so maybe that’s why some people feel like it’s getting popular?

[name_u]Or[/name_u] maybe it’s just people’s views of it changing even if the charts are not reflecting it yet or something? I remember when I first heard some celebrity named their kid [name_u]James[/name_u], all I heard was negative feedback both irl and online and I’m not aware of this view having changed much but I haven’t talked names much with irl people lately and most berries tend to be too nice to talk bad about names they don’t like lol. I have seen a few people who already like boy names on girls who suddenly like it or became more embolden to use it or just want to use it as an honor for the middle spot but not enough for it to be considered common. What I usually see is most people having become inured by it (at least until another celebrity names their kid something ā€œweirdā€), accepting that some people (especially celebrities) will name their kids what they deem ā€œcrazyā€ names. But maybe other people have seen and heard better feedback on [name_u]James[/name_u] than I have :woman_shrugging:t2:

I think this is it. I’ve seen it as a middle name for so many birth announcements, but never as a first name

I’m also curious about this so if anyone knows where to find accurate middle name statistics please let me know!

I don’t know anyone with the first name [name_u]James[/name_u], boy or girl, actually! Thigh I know two people whose middle names are [name_u]James[/name_u]. One is a 50 y/o man, the other a 22 y/o girl!

I would say about half are vintage classics and half are chic international names.

Ohhh, this make so much more sense. I didn’t know this but always felt like there had to be a reason for Amy’s name since it’s a bit different from the others.

Its definitely being used more as a middle name. I’m not sure how many people irl are using it but it comes up on lists and forums as a middle name quite a bit and has gotten mainstream enough that I’ve seen people consider it just because and not as an honor name. I don’t think its actually even that common as a middle name yet but since it feels a bit daring or unusual to use [name_u]James[/name_u] for a girl it stands out more and feels like I’m seeing it everywhere since I notice every instance of it.

I think that [name_f]Amelia[/name_f] would work with the others, and [name_f]Amy[/name_f] is my favorite nn for [name_f]Amelia[/name_f], so I kind of see it, but I also read it as the only nn name in the sibset.

This was so hard to pick! Both are beautiful, but i feel like [name_f]Elowen[/name_f] [name_u]June[/name_u] flows a bit better. [name_u]June[/name_u] [name_f]Maelys[/name_f] would be lovely too.
