Summary

This just reminds me that once when I was researching actual [name_m]Breton[/name_m] names (rather than the game series’ version of Bretons), I found an article that said it was for the real language’s names but then presented a body of text that clearly was copied from some body of text about the Bretons in the [name_m]Elder[/name_m] Scrolls.

Maybe [name_f]Aeris[/name_f] could work?

A little background: I have synesthesia (specifically colors associated with letters, numbers, names, words, feelings, etc.) and I’ve just started trying to make combos but I’m struggling with the color associations!

So to my fellow berries with synesthesia (I think there are a lot of us!) does your synesthesia affect what names you put together?

  • Yes, I try to pair names with the exact same color/taste/smell/sound/whatever
  • Yes, I try to pair names with complementary colors/tastes/smells/sounds/etc.
  • Yes, I try to avoid pairing names with the same colors/tastes/you get the point
  • No, it doesn’t affect my decisions
  • I don’t have synesthesia
  • Other (please elaborate!)

And if you voted any of the yes options above, how strongly does it affect your opinion? 1 being very little, 10 being that you can’t stand it any other way

I voted other because all three of the Yes options can apply. For me its less that I’m purposefully pairing specific names together and more that the color vibes makes some names bad together, either because they just really clash because they’re too different, or because sometimes names in the same color family go prefectly together but other times they’re too much together and I get too strong of a specific mental image for it to feel like a versatile combo for a real person.

To elaborate on it not affecting my decisions: I’m a very practical person (in certain areas of life) who takes making combos probably too seriously  and my main concern when making them is how well they verbally flow together, so my color associations with names rarely enter my mind during that time. Not that they don’t matter to me, just that my practical side typically takes over and I don’t think of them as predominantly.

I agree, a lot of the time the colour and other associations take a back seat to other things but every so often the combination of colours makes me go ‘ew no, definitely not’ or ‘oh wow, the colours make this combo extra good!!’

What’s in a name? A Shakespeare poll series :performing_arts:

I’ve decided to poll ALL of the names used by Shakespeare, starting with the letter A. Characters known only as formal titles have been discounted and repeat names are only counted once.

Nice short one today, not many Ds!

i wouldn’t say i have synaesthesia, but i definitely have some colour associations with names. it does affect my combos and sibsets a lot - for example, my two favourite girl names (aurembiaix and persephone) are copper and purple and that’s a rancid combination that makes me not like them together. therefore, in my ideal sibset, ive ended up subbing out persephone for my number three name (eurydice) because she’s a sort of honey-and-cream colour, which goes way better with aurembiaix.

I don’t have synesthesia but I do associate colors with certain letters and sounds (not synesthesia because I can recall memories that influenced my associations, which wouldn’t be there with synesthesia). it does play into the names I use in combos and sibsets.

I voted complementary - I try to put “cool” names with “warm” names and avoid major clashes. Both in combos and in sibsets. But I wouldn’t pair names that have a really similar or strong color/vibe because then it’s a bit overpowering. Like if two names feel inky, navy blue then it’s amplified in the combo and it sort of takes away some of the depth (+ makes it harder to pair with siblings/imagine fitting into my life as a hypothetically real child).

Another example because this is what I keep thinking of

Mostly I just see the colors and underlying aesthetic/vibe that goes with them, but there was one time where I made a UC that I could only describe as tasting like one of those chocolate oranges? And I loved it, it really took over the senses. But I had to change it so soon because I had trouble seeing them as potential kids/my kids, because IRL I am not living in a color or aesthetic so it was hard to combine my normcore (?) with these very strong sensory names.

Would bird names on siblings be too much or cute? (Like, dunno, Robin and Lark or Robin and Dove!)

  • Cute! :nest_with_eggs:
  • Too theme-y :empty_nest:

I only like the [name_m] Riker [/name_m] spelling, but still voted for it because it’s effectively the same name.
