@OctaviaMay I desperately wanted to vote for Sasha Florian and Hugo Thyme as well but I was out of votes! Hugo Thyme is so balanced and peaceful somehow :green_heart:

@PeachyMum I think Romany is usable for a person with ties to this culture but otherwise it stays into cultural appropriation. It sounds stunning, I certainly see the appeal. Have you come across Romana and Romina?
@tori101 your opinion on poll # 7605 would be very valuable :heart_decoration:

@Etymology how is Arianell pronounced please?

I tried my best to answer your thoughtful questions but I am so not organised about any of this. :see_no_evil: [name_f]My[/name_f] short list is actually pretty transient - it only lives in my head because I figure if a name’s really important I won’t forget it, and I kind of test them by just not writing my short list down! Other than that, I don’t really categorise my lists based on length - it’s more based on why I like the names, which could be its etymology makes me happy, it’s a nature name, it has a Finnish name day, etc
But for the sake of these polls I treated those lumped together as my long list! (They all exist in one long note on my phone anyway, with tags and subheadings )

Yea thinking you’re right there. Sadly [name_m]Romany[/name_m] needs to stay a GP or a ‘NB name only’ :see_no_evil: Sadly looked at all the [name_f]Roma[/name_f]- names & no others appeal for some reason. Sometimes I think it’s a good thing I’ve already had & named my kids so don’t need to stress about using these names in actual RL :see_no_evil::joy: x

Hello feeling very technologically inept but which poll sorry? I cannot find this particular one :woman_facepalming:t3: I have responded to one that I think your referring too!

Personally I think it should be avoided as it’s an ethnic group. In my eyes it’s like naming a child Ashkenazi or Irish. It just feels odd. I actually met a little girl named R0ma R0s3 the other day which in all honesty just made me feel uneasy. Especially as the mum chose this name to be fashionable with no connection to the capital (R0m3) or ethnic group. I just think avoid names that could cause offence to infringed societies especially when there is so many glorious names out there. Why not use Romilly instead of Romany? Or Romy instead of R0m@?

Appreciate your comment  As mentioned it wouldn’t be for an actual RL child just wondering if when names like [name_f]Gypsy[/name_f] have been being used for years if in RL [name_m]Romany[/name_m] could work as well. I don’t dislike [name_f]Romilly[/name_f] just don’t love it, same with [name_f]Romy[/name_f], although both are beautiful names.

Side note, I don’t dislike [name_f]Roma[/name_f] or think it would be offensive to use just because of no links to [name_m]Rome[/name_m] (avoiding the culture in this example) it’s not different than people using [name_f]Florence[/name_f], [name_m]Rome[/name_m], [name_f]India[/name_f], [name_f]London[/name_f], [name_m]Cairo[/name_m], [name_m]Milan[/name_m], [name_m]Orlando[/name_m], [name_m]Dallas[/name_m] etc. to fit in with the current/previous trends when they had no connection to that country/city/state

@PeachyMum I think even as GP’s it’s a bit awkward. I just think we shouldn’t show appreciation to names that could be considered offensive.

[name_f]Roma[/name_f] refers to Romani people it’s a colloquial term. In the UK (well especially where I am) we have a lot of Romani/Traveller people so these terms feel very prominent. I therefore feel it’s different to using [name_f]Florence[/name_f] or [name_m]Paris[/name_m] as there isn’t the same connotations. Romani people - Wikipedia

[name_m]Ah[/name_m] snap, I’m also UK with a several travellers around us & surrounding towns - another reason why I wouldn’t use the name in RL but was curious if people would given the name [name_f]Gypsy[/name_f] I fully get what your saying I just also think of the [name_f]Goddess[/name_f] [name_f]Roma[/name_f] & simply [name_m]Rome[/name_m], hence why I said ignoring the Romani people connection I didn’t consider the name to be offensive
I do enjoy seeing things from other peoples perspective, & while it won’t make me remove [name_m]Romany[/name_m] from my GP list, I appreciate the conversation on it. [name_f]Hope[/name_f] you have a great day

regarding “given the name Gypsy” – that term should be used even less as a name than [name_m]Romany[/name_m], as it’s a straight-up slur. I’m aware that people do, but that shouldn’t count towards anything else being considered okay or not.

Agreed. Never said Gypsy was ok just that it’s a name used & it made me wonder how Romany would be considered/seen for RL. Again this was never a name I’d use in RL (nor do I have a reason to), I was just simply curious
. First time in all my time on NB I’ve ever regretted making a post :woman_facepalming:t3:

If an admin would prefer I deleted the poll in case it causes further offence, please reach out as I have no problem doing so x

I don’t think anything needs to be deleted here. It was an overall kind and respectful conversation, there’s no need to eradicate any sign of discourse on this site

Summary

[name_f]My[/name_f] lists exist exclusively in my head so I answered in a sort of theoretical sense. I’ve been intending to write them down more concretely but haven’t yet.
For me my “short” list is probably between 20-30 and are my top favorites consisting of about half forever faves and half current loves off of my longer lists that I cycle through and change pretty frequently. This is the list I go to when asked to list my top 10/20/25/etc. [name_f]My[/name_f] “middle” list is probably about 100 names long and is all the names I like enough to seriously consider using and generally pull from for all of my imaginary sibsets/namebanks for bandwagons/etc. [name_f]My[/name_f] “long” list is serveral hundred names long and is every name I like at all. This is the list I pull suggestions from and my backup list if my future SO doesn’t like any of my actual faves. If it doesn’t make that list, I actively dislike it and would not consider it or absolutely could never use it for some reason. All of these lengths are for my girl list, my boy’s lists tend to be about 1/3 shorter.
As far as GP/Middle name only goes, my short list often includes one or two of my top favorite middle name picks that I love and would totally use for a first if it weren’t for specific reasons that are keeping them in GP territory for first names. The middle list has a few more like that that are slightly less top fave but still great. The GP that are more out there and I really would only use them as a middle if at all are only on my long list. Family names that are direct enough honors that I could only ever use them as a middle and there is zero chance under any circumstances of them being first names are usually more on a separate “top middle name picks” list but might get written down on a middle or long list depending on the exact parameters I was using for the list when I wrote it.

In the US I would spell the culture’s name Romani and pronounce it ro-MAH-nee, meanwhile [name_m]Romany[/name_m] I would pronounce RO-muh-nee (and I actually know someone with this name). I didn’t even connect [name_m]Romany[/name_m] at first other than the fact it has ‘Roma’ in it.

However I looked it up and it seems like it the culture is sometimes spelled [name_m]Romany[/name_m] and pronounced RO-muh-nee so that makes me more hesitant about [name_m]Romany[/name_m] as a name.
