The running joke is that the rest of the characters, who pronounce it as “neeko-lazh”, are constantly corrected by the adoptive father of Nikolaj and the Latvian characters. But the father and the Latvians then also pronounce Nikolaj as “neeko-lazh” when they’re correcting the others (so they tell them they’re saying it wrong and then say the same thing back to them as the ‘correct way’ - that’s the joke). This pronounciation would not only be incorrect in Latvia but Nikolaj is not even a Latvian name - it would be ‘Nikolajs’. So I think the writers maybe didn’t do any research at all and just picked the name randomly for the joke because it “sounded Slavic”.
