đŸ«’ The Rarest Greek Names - A & V!

Hi berries! Basically, I have a fever right now and needed a way to pass the time :smiling_face_with_tear:

One of my favourite resources on Greek names is this website, which discusses the results of a study done in 2008 analysing the names of (almost) 100.000 Greeks! But one of the sections I haven’t looked that much into before was the “unique names” section – names that were only registered once out of those 100.00 Greeks! Obviously, the study is many years old, but I don’t believe any of these names have gotten significantly more or less common since then.

[name_m]The[/name_m] list is ridiculously long, so I’m going alphabetically and doing the A & V names!

Pronunciation guide

G = hard G (like “egg”)
J = soft G (like “gym”)
DH = th like in “this”
O = AW (like “dog”)
GH = [ÉŁ], think sort of like a [name_f]French[/name_f] R (or listen to the first sound in [this word])(https://forvo.com/word/ÎłÎŹÏ„Î±/#el))
This is about how to read my explanations of the pronunciations, rather than the actual names! So If I say Diogenis = dhee-o-GHE-nees you will know how the “dh”, “o” and “gh” are meant to be said

Ooh, there are so many stunning names here. Some of my favorites:

Vasilakis - such a lofty, cool meaning.
Verini - I love how this one has such a pretty sound and feels strong and delicate
Violanthi - I don’t know what it is about [name_f]Violet[/name_f], but every version of that name is stunning to me
Athanatos - Reminds me of [name_m]Athanasios[/name_m], a character from a book I loved.
Avgousta - [name_f]Augusta[/name_f] already has so much gravitas and Avgousta feels even stronger to me.

I know what you mean! It’s especially hard with male surnames - I can’t tell if they’re Lithuanian or Greek sometimes :sweat_smile: So interesting linguistically, considering how far away we are from one another! (From the list of names you said you liked, I feel like [name_m]Amyntas[/name_m] could even pass as Lithuanian, at least to me :grin:)

I have often had to search actors to find out if they’re Greek or Lithuanian xD

Ikr! Very strange. And Lithuanian has links with Sanskrit, which again is so far away :exploding_head:
