The Roo Redo

Oh, here we go again…

We’re changing Roo’s name. Before you judge me too much, allow me to explain. I know her name is beautiful, I truly love it, it’s so sweet and romantic and just precious, and I am so so grateful for all the help I got naming her (the first time). It suited her perfectly when she was born, I felt like we’d hit the nail on the head so to speak. But as we’ve gotten to know her… she’s not a [name]Rosalind[/name]. It just doesn’t suit her. Maybe I’m overly sensitive about these things, but I’ve always connected feelings, colours, names, songs, elements, plants, minerals and creatures to one another. It’s a spirit thing I guess. I just can’t bear to give her a name that’s so completely not her. When I told my boyfriend, he understood and actually agreed with me, he doesn’t think she’s a [name]Rosalind[/name] either. [name]Even[/name] stranger, my Shaman says the same. Anyway, this is not a pity thread, I just wanted to explain why I’m doing what I’m doing.

This is Roo’s spirit: The blues and greens of the ocean and the sky, beautiful willow trees and the rivers running between them. [name]Light[/name], dancing and singing, joyous and sweet. Enchanting and mesmerising. [name]New[/name], open, sweet and fresh like spring.

The names we’ve found that we feel Roo in are as follows…

The obvious Roo names: Rosmerta & Rozhanitsa

The not so obvious Roo name: [name]Pandora[/name]

The [name]Pom[/name] names: Melpomene, [name]Pomeline[/name] & Polyhymnia

The Nuss/Luss names: [name]Melusine[/name] & [name]Venus[/name]

Combos I like:

Melpomene [name]Willow[/name] [name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] Ostara [name]Wren[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name]
[name]Pandora[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Selene[/name]
Polyhymnia [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Peridot[/name]
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara
Rosmerta [name]Circe[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name]
Rozhanitsa [name]Selene[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Venus[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] [name]Sybilla[/name]
[name]Venus[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name]
[name]Venus[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Wren[/name]/[name]Laurel[/name]

So do we have any opinions? Suggestions for amazing nature middles are always welcome. And I’m not very good at putting together combos, so if anyone has something that sounds better in mind, come on and tell me.

No judgement here [name]Ottilie[/name]. If she’s not a [name]Rosalind[/name], then she’s not a [name]Rosalind[/name].

[name]Will[/name] you still call her Roo? Because it is an adorable nn and I feel it fits the description you gave of her.

[name]How[/name] do you pronounce Rozhanitsa?

My favorite of your names: [name]Pomeline[/name], [name]Melusine[/name], [name]Venus[/name], and Rozhanitsa.

To be honest, [name]Peridot[/name] fits the description you gave. That fresh, new, sweet, green color.

[name]Peridot[/name] Rozhanitsa [name]Selene[/name]? I’m no good at combos either.

Of your combo choices I like [name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name]/[name]Peridot[/name], Rozhanitsa [name]Selene[/name] [name]Willow[/name] (this is really pretty), [name]Venus[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Wren[/name], [name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara.

Excited to see what you choose!

Oh, with that description she sounds just like a [name]Pomeline[/name], [name]Melusine[/name] or [name]Venus[/name]. All very pretty and melodious. Rozhanitsa and Polyhymnia seem a little too much for FNs but would make nice middles. And I think you can get away with calling her Roo whatever name you choose- it’s such a cute nickname for a little one

I’m liking [name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara and [name]Venus[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Wren[/name]. And I love [name]Sybilla[/name], [name]Selene[/name] and [name]Laurel[/name]! I’m struggling with putting combos together too. Perhaps I’ll toy with some later.

For other nature middles, perhaps: [name]Aspen[/name], [name]Fern[/name], [name]Fleur[/name], [name]Fawn[/name], [name]Hazel[/name]? Sound beautiful and magical to me, but probably not your style. And I love [name]Eva[/name] and its meaning. There’s also Loer (moon), Delen (petal), [name]Kelyn[/name] ([name]Holly[/name]) and [name]Rosen[/name] ([name]Rose[/name])

Also, do you like [name]Apolline[/name] at all? When I came across it a while ago my first thought was ‘that’s an ottilie name!’

Good luck with your name redo. I’m sure you’ll find the perfect one eventually

If you feel like her name doesn’t match her spirit, and your boyfriend and Shaman agree, you definitely shouldn’t ignore it and I completely get you. It’s why I have several options in case [name]Persephone[/name] turns out not to be a [name]Persephone[/name]. When you described her spirit and listed your name options, I had a wonderful feeling towards [name]Melusine[/name]. It’s gorgeous and I think it fits exactly how you described her. I think it’s her (in my opinion).

I [name]LOVE[/name] both your [name]Melusine[/name] combos but I love [name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name] the most. I also would love [name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] Ostara and [name]Melusine[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara.
I love [name]Willow[/name] as your nature name. or Maybe flat out [name]River[/name]?

Maybe:

[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Arwen[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Fay[/name]/[name]Faye[/name]/[name]Fey[/name]/[name]Fae[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Xanthe[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Morgana[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Ondine[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] Thelassa [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Nerida[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Atalanta[/name] [name]Willow[/name] (love this!)
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Yvaine[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Avalon[/name] [name]Willow[/name]

I could probably come up with more but I can’t think of better nature names than [name]Willow[/name] for her. I think I’ve given you a lot in other posts but am too lazy at the moment to go look >.< If you like any or want more let me know and I’ll keep working on it

For what its worth, I adore her name, I think its truly beautiful. But mum knows best, especially in these situations.

My favourite from your list is [name]Pandora[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Selene[/name]. I find Rosmerta & Rozhanitsa too harsh in sound (sorry) and a bit too clunky for my liking, but I’ll offer up Rosamel and [name]Rosalba[/name] as alternatives.

Good luck choosing a new name for your baby

No Judgement!

From your list I am really loving:
[name]Pandora[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name]-This one stood out to me the most. I can see it being used for a your little girl and when she is an adult. I am loving the vibe of it.
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara- this would be my second choice I cant decide which is better!

[name]Venus[/name]- I just think of the tennis player
and the others I am not getting the same feeling as [name]Pandora[/name] or [name]Pomeline[/name].

Good luck and I hope you find the right name for your little darling!

[name]Hi[/name] [name]Ottilie[/name],

A brave thing to do i think, changing her name, and it’s the start of whole new name-finding adventures. (in my country this is not possible without legal permission (for example because of obvious teasing potential ).

Your description made me think of Roswitha, wdyt?

Roo’s spirit is beautiful.

I don’t think you need a Roo name to continue calling her Roo. Roo simply sounds like a lovely pet name as one of my uncles used to call me Possum/[name]Blossom[/name] both of which are not related at all to my name. Maybe it’s because I’m Australian and Roo reminds me of a [name]Joey[/name], baby kangaroo.

Are the names you listed the only ones you will consider?

[name]Peridot[/name] and [name]Willow[/name] would be fabulous first names. Also [name]Laurel[/name], [name]Wren[/name] and [name]Selene[/name].

Im struggling to see how [name]Venus[/name] fits your lovely description of Roo. [name]Venus[/name] is more seduction and less spring to me.

The following names are unfamiliar to me but I like the sound of them:
[name]Melusine[/name], [name]Pomeline[/name] (does it really mean apple- that’s cool)

Other names to consider:
The image you have to me is eternally youthful, playful yet wise. [name]Serene[/name] and Content.
Maybe look for names that mean youthful, serenity, spring.

Yippee! I was wondering when you were going to ask for input. I do love [name]Rosalind[/name] Illyria, but if it’s not her name it’s not her name.

[name]How[/name] about just plain [name]Rue[/name] for you? I think it’s beautiful. “[name]Rue[/name] for you” I suppose isn’t the best association, but you liked [name]Ophelia[/name], so why not? [name]Rosemary[/name] for remembrance?
[name]Rue[/name]… basilisk-proof herb, “sour herb of grace.”

I love Rosmerta. What a rare and fine name! Minerally in a way - like roses growing out of rocks. And I love your pairing of [name]Circe[/name] and [name]Willow[/name].
Rosmerta [name]Circe[/name] [name]Willow[/name].

[name]Pomeline[/name] is such a dignified apple-name. [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow could have used your help. Apples are magical.
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Sybilla[/name] [name]Snow[/name]? Thinking of [name]Snow[/name] White…
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Wren[/name]? That would be a real tapestry of a name - apples and gazelles and birds.
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Sybilla[/name] [name]Garnet[/name]
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Sybilla[/name] [name]Roxane[/name]. Not sure why, but I like [name]Roxane[/name] for you.

[name]Roxane[/name] [name]Artemis[/name] Laerke
[name]Roxane[/name] [name]Artemis[/name] [name]Lake[/name]
[name]Roxane[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name] [name]Agnethe[/name] or [name]Roxane[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name] [name]Inez[/name] …some kind of [name]Agnes[/name] variant could be nice.
[name]Roxane[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Rue[/name]

Hmmm… What about [name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Venus[/name] [name]Willow[/name]? Or those three names in any order?

I think you’ll need to strike a careful balance between honoring her spirit and living/working in this world. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be named after old Slavic goddesses of winter or ancient Celtic fertility goddesses. Melpomene will have pronunciation problems (not insurmountable) and [name]Pomeline[/name] might be a little too cutesy. [name]Pandora[/name] & her box still might have a few cringe-worthy adolescent teasing moments, and [name]Venus[/name] is a little too luscious imo.

That leaves, for me, [name]Melusine[/name] and Polyhymnia (and the latter is almost too much). [name]Melusine[/name] to me feels like a much colder name than [name]Rosalind[/name].

Some other ‘Roo’ options:

[name]Aruna[/name] (“the personification of sunrise” in Sanskrit)
[name]Jerusha[/name]
Sigrun (if you’re feeling Nordic)
Rohese (Anglo-[name]Saxon[/name] form of [name]Rose[/name]); also a Norman French version of Hrodohaidis, “kind fame”
Rohini (a star-- Aldebaran-- and a governing birth-sign in Hindu astrology. If you read the description of people assigned its influence, it sounds like Roo!)

Rossana (the Italianate version of Rukhsana/[name]Roxanna[/name], “dawn”)
Rolande (feminine version of Roland, in use since medieval times)
Roshni (“morning light, radiance, luster”)
Rosenda “Fame, path” in Galician

Before the baby was born you were specifically looking for blue-green, watery, forest-y names. Have you revisited any of those lists?

[name]Rosalind[/name] is a beautiful name, but I can definitely understand the struggle of not fitting your name…my own name has never suited me and it’s frustrating indeed!

I love [name]Pomeline[/name] so much! It’s definitely my favorite of your first name options, so whimsical but still elegant, and brimming with sweetness. It sounds perfect for the description of your daughter.

My second favorite is Rosmerta, so lovely, and not a drastic change so it would be very easy for family to adjust to, I think.

I’m not fond of [name]Venus[/name] or Polyhymnia, they both sound almost…anatomical to me, like some kind of medical condition or body part. [name]Both[/name] also feel kind of heavy, not the springy, joyful description of your babe. I like the sound of [name]Pandora[/name], but the [name]Pandora[/name]'s box story seems just a tad too dark of a connotation.

The first thing that came to mind when reading your post was [name]Mazarine[/name], like the mazarine blue butterfly. [name]Reading[/name] the mazarine blue butterfly description on Wikipedia (looked it up to double check spelling) sounded so perfect for your daughter. I feel like she needs a name with whimsy, and [name]Mazarine[/name] certainly has that! Also, Mazy/[name]Maisie[/name] is a very cute nn.

I also really like the suggestion of [name]Peridot[/name] for a fn, such a sweet and pretty name, gentle but spunky! Also like [name]Sybil[/name]/[name]Sybilla[/name] and the idea of an [name]Agnes[/name] variant…perhaps the Welsh [name]Nesta[/name]? It sounds nature-y and springy, bringing thoughts of nests full of new life.

Other names that came to mind:
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Opal[/name]
[name]Meadow[/name]
[name]Primrose[/name] (this too would be a good roo name!)
Dragonfly (kinda out there, but I think it’d be a great middle)
Poplar
[name]Lilac[/name]
[name]Fern[/name]
[name]Blythe[/name]
Perenelle (name of [name]Nicolas[/name] Flamel’s wife, beautiful history and legendary feel, and “perennial” is both a great meaning/connection, it’s also very springy because it brings to mind the blossoming of perennial flowers…so lovely.)

Can’t wait to hear what you decide!

I’m back with Roo names as I don’t like either of yours very much (Sorry!). I also don’t think you need Roo-/[name]Ro[/name]-/Ru names to call her Roo, it’s just an adorable nickname.

Rocana (beautiful woman)
Rodia (rose)
[name]Rodina[/name]
[name]Rohana[/name] (sandalwood) and I [name]ADORE[/name] this one for you – [name]Rohana[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name]/[name]Rohana[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] [name]Sybilla[/name]/[name]Rohana[/name] [name]Willow[/name] [name]Selene[/name]
Rohesia (rose/kind/sort)
[name]Romilly[/name] (wanderer)
Rosabel/Rosabella (beautiful rose)
[name]Rosina[/name]
[name]Rowena[/name] (fame/friend/pike etc)
[name]Roxana[/name] (bright, dawn,light)
Ruhani (spiritual)

So [name]Melusine[/name] and [name]Rohana[/name] are my absolute favorites for you! [name]Rohana[/name] in the lead by a bit (it’s soft, beautiful, makes me think of valleys and streams…gorgeous!)

That’s the thing about people…we are not static spirits. We are constantly growing, changing, and evolving. What if your sweet and fresh, blue ocean infant grows up to be a spunky and energetic, red fire 5-year-old and later a passionately curious, endless sky of sparkling stars adult. Obviously, it’s your baby, and you should do what makes you happy, but I’m afraid it may be impossible to have the feeling you get from a name perfectly match the feeling you get from her spirit at all times. Maybe instead of thinking of it as her name not matching who she is, think of it as her spirit adding new meaning and depth to her name. Let her define her name rather than letting the name define her.

[name]Just[/name] my two cents. I’m sure that with your good taste, she will have a strikingly beautiful name no matter what you decide. Good luck!

I agree with [name]Blade[/name]'s assessment. Some of these names are a bit too much to work in the real world. I hate to say it, but I could see your daughter opting to go by one of her middle names if given one of these combinations. I don’t mean to be too harsh, but it’s just the way I see it.

I know you have listed some names before that I think would fit the description you are looking for. The two that come to mind are [name]Roxana[/name] and [name]Melisande[/name]. I think both of these names are beautiful. They are both a little exotic but can also work very well in the real world. I like [name]Roxana[/name] especially because the Roo nickname still fits. I think you can continue to call her by the nickname Roo though with whatever you decide. Nicknames have a way of coming about on their own.

The one name that definitely does not fit what you are looking for is [name]Pandora[/name]. I don’t get the light, watery, spring connection at all. It’s a very heavy and dark name, in my opinion.

And I really love the middle name options of [name]Willow[/name], [name]Laurel[/name], and [name]Phoebe[/name]. [name]Sybilla[/name] is pretty too but I prefer [name]Sybella[/name].

'Scuse me, just have to say that [name]Aruna[/name] and [name]Rohana[/name] are stunning. Like a stun gun.

Also, I am brilliant. [name]Roxane[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Rue[/name]? What could be better? Elegant, spunky, vibrant. This one!
[name]Roxana[/name]'s good too…
My sister-cousin [name]Roxy[/name] “Roo” shares [name]Rosalind[/name]'s b-day.

I was blown away by Rosmerta. For me, it fits your description to a T. Rosmerta seems fresh, spring-like, and lovely. It’s also not much of a stretch from [name]Rosalind[/name], so that might be a plus. Still have the same Roo potential! Best of luck! I know whatever you choose will be creative and beautiful.

I’m sad to hear that [name]Rosalind[/name] Illyria doesn’t work for her - it’s so very lovely. However, I’m sure you’ll find something equally ravishing and far more appropriate.

From your list, I really like [name]Melusine[/name] and Rosmerta. I agree with Dantea that [name]Melusine[/name] matches your description of Roo’s spirit wonderfully. [name]Melusine[/name] is very greenish-blue with a hint of silver to me and is indeed my favorite from your list. Rosmerta is beautiful and unexpected, and I do like that it preserves ‘Roo’.

[name]Pomeline[/name] is quite delightful, but she feels far more autumn to me - perhaps because that’s prime apple harvesting time? I also want to like [name]Roxane[/name]/[name]Roxana[/name] for this little girl, but that name is just so gold and wintery to me.

Some ideas:
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Amoret[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Tamar[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Yseult[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Arcadia[/name] [name]Danae[/name] (I really like this one)
[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name] [name]Noor[/name]

Rosemerta [name]Iris[/name] [name]Melisande[/name]
Rosmerta [name]Iris[/name] [name]Leontine[/name]
Rosmerta [name]Daphne[/name] [name]Ondine[/name]
Rosmerta [name]Seraphina[/name] [name]Elaine[/name]
Rosmerta [name]Charis[/name] [name]Apolline[/name]

Loving dantea’s suggestion of [name]Rohana[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name]! [name]Rohana[/name] is beautiful. I also like niftylavalamp’s suggestion of [name]Mazarine[/name].

I’m a long time lover of [name]Pandora[/name]. [name]Pandora[/name] feels very wild blue rivers and enchanting green forests to me.

Rosmerta and Rozhanitsa feel like lesser versions of [name]Rosalind[/name] to me; I’d just stick with [name]Rosalind[/name] if that’s the route you want to go.

Melpomene and Polyhymnia are far too out there for a first name, imo. Better left in the middle.

[name]Melusine[/name] is very cool. It’s slinkier than your other name choices, however. It reminds me of a glass prism, shimmering in the moonlight. Very pretty, but different.

[name]Venus[/name] is another cool one, but like [name]Melusine[/name], it doesn’t bring to mind your vision. Slinky and sensual.

Would you consider some of the other names you had on your lists before she was born? [name]Circe[/name] and [name]Ceridwen[/name] are the only ones I remember, and I still think they’re absolutely perfect for your little girl.

Edit: Also, I forgot to suggest Fairuza, because I was distracted with Rohana.

[name]Ottilie[/name], I love [name]Rosalind[/name]'s current name, but I’m sure you wouldn’t change it without a good reason. All your combos are so magical, shimmery and gorgeous!

My favourites are:

[name]Melusine[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Melusine[/name] Ostara [name]Wren[/name]
Rosmerta [name]Circe[/name] [name]Tabitha[/name]
Rozhanitsa [name]Selene[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
Melpomene [name]Willow[/name] [name]Artemis[/name]
[name]Pomeline[/name] [name]Laurel[/name] Ostara

I don’t really like [name]Tabitha[/name] because it reminds me of tabby cats. Melpomene and [name]Pomeline[/name] are both beautiful and I love them but I don’t like how the “pom” sound reminds me of Pomeranians and apples (it just seems like a strange association for a name). I’m not a fan of [name]Pandora[/name] either, sorry. While all the names in your Polyhymnia combo are lovely, it’s a bit too much alliteration for me.

I’ll try changing/making some more combos:

Rosmerta [name]Selene[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Sybilla[/name] [name]Phoebe[/name] [name]Artemis[/name]
Polyhymnia [name]Venus[/name] [name]Amethyst[/name]
Polyhymnia [name]Amethyst[/name] [name]Selene[/name]
Rozhanitsa [name]Venus[/name] Melpomene
Melpomene [name]Phoebe[/name] Ostara
