The trouble with naming a sixth child. . . (Sorry so long)

I’ve never posted on a naming forum before, but maybe that will tell you how much I need specific help with naming this baby.

There are so many rules that I’ve built up for myself over the last 11 years - and after reading these forums and the Nameberry articles I can see I’m not the only one with self-imposed rules. Hehehe.

Older sibs:

[name]Guthrie[/name] - nn “G” or Guffy (My maiden name)
[name]Adeline[/name] - nn [name]Addie[/name]
[name]Sullivan[/name] - nn [name]Sully[/name]
[name]Truman[/name] - nn [name]Tru[/name]
[name]Penelope[/name] - nn [name]Pepper[/name]

My unbreakable rules -
[name]Unique[/name] first initial - I might want to monogram something ;), this includes H and K (mine and hubs initials)
Longer names with nickname potential
Steer clear of top 150 or so of SSA name popularity list.

Was super disappointed that both [name]Adeline[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] seemed to gain some popularity AFTER we had already signed, sealed, and delivered our babes. Hoping for something that won’t meet the same fate, though I know the classic, feminine names are always going to come around again.

[name]Baby[/name] is a girl.

My [name]FAVORITE[/name] name is [name]Clementine[/name] - but I feel slightly bothered by the -ine ending on both [name]Adeline[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name]. Is this bothersome to anyone else? I think [name]Mimi[/name] or [name]Minnie[/name] would be a cute nickname. Not a fan of [name]Clem[/name]. I am pretty good at keeping people from using nicknames I don’t love ([name]Penelope[/name] is never [name]Penny[/name] or [name]Nellie[/name] - always [name]Pepper[/name]).

Also like:
[name]Felicity[/name] - [name]Fifi[/name]? Filly? Lissy?
[name]Matilda[/name] - [name]Millie[/name]
[name]Beatrice[/name] - [name]Bea[/name]

Hubby wants [name]Cordelia[/name] or [name]Drucilla[/name] (no joke). He is okay with [name]Felicity[/name]. He likes [name]Clementine[/name]. Doesn’t like [name]Matilda[/name].

If you had this rather small name list, what would you go with. I want it to fit with the sibs. [name]Don[/name]'t really care if family likes it - it will grow on them.

Any of these names? Something new? Too much to ask?

Great names! I like clementine too, but i think since quite a few celebs have picked this name up, its only going to grow in popularity. I like cordelia. you can can her delia as a nickname. Would you do [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Clementine[/name] and call her CC? I think that is adorable as well and grow with her.

any chance the husband is a [name]Buffy[/name] fan?

Great names, all of them! For a sixth child, [name]Cordelia[/name] is probably my favorite out of them all, although I also like [name]Felicity[/name]. I’m not thinking of other suggestions right now but if I do, I’ll come back!

We’re working on names for #5 right now, and I feel your pain. I’m super-picky about names. My hubby is less picky than I am, but he’s picky in different ways, so there are times when we find ourselves having to ditch the whole list and start over. We’ve also seen a couple of our names travel up the charts since we decided to use them. I’ve gotten over it and decided that we’re trendsetters.

My favorite of your list is [name]Beatrice[/name]. The only real life [name]Cordelia[/name] I know is all tomboy and goes by her initials, so I guess I’m biased against that one. I like [name]Felicity[/name], too. I’d probably be reluctant to pair Clemetine with [name]Adeline[/name], but perhaps you could go with a variation like Celmentina?

Congrats on your sixth pregnancy! [name]Adeline[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name] are [name]German[/name] vintage and Greek mythological respectfully but they work together. Here are my thoughts on your name list.

[name]Clementine[/name] - nice name but it does bother me that [name]Adeline[/name] and [name]Clementine[/name] rhyme.
[name]Felicity[/name] - I love this name. The sound and meaning make me smile. Nicknames: [name]Flick[/name], Fliss
[name]Matilda[/name] - [name]Love[/name] this name - it’s spunky but has historical depth. [name]Alas[/name], if your hubby isn’t on board, it should be eliminated.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - This is a wonderful vintage name that goes well with your daughters.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - Not my favourite Shakespearean name. A subtle connection between the sisters: it shares an “el” with [name]Adeline[/name] and [name]Penelope[/name].
[name]Drucilla[/name] - I prefer the spelling [name]Drusilla[/name]. It’s an old [name]Roman[/name] name but it does sound dark and prissy at the same time.

I really like all of the names you’ve mentioned! I actually like [name]Drusilla[/name], though I prefer [name]Drusilla[/name] to [name]Drucilla[/name]. I think that [name]Dru[/name] is very cute and wearable. I don’t think it’s my favorite of your choices, but I don’t think it’s too crazy. I remember someone who posted here a while back had a [name]Clementine[/name] nicknamed [name]Lemon[/name] which I thought was really cute, but that might me a bit out there for you. I think I like [name]Felicity[/name] best out of your options (narrowly - it’s a really hard choice, since I think they’re all great). Fliss or Flissy would be cute as a nickname. [name]Beatrice[/name] is probably my second favorite. I love [name]Bea[/name].

[name]Clementine[/name] - I love [name]Clementine[/name]. As far as the similar ending to [name]Adeline[/name], my question to you is, do your children most often go by their lovely nicknames, or are they just as often called by their full names? [name]Addie[/name] and [name]Mimi[/name] or [name]Addie[/name] and [name]Minnie[/name] aren’t nearly as similar, and if that’s what they’ll be called, and if [name]Clementine[/name] is a name you’re in love with, I think it’s still a lovely possibility.

[name]Felicity[/name] - This is such a beautiful name. I love how it sounds, as well as its meaning, and have loved it since I read L.M. [name]Montgomery[/name] books as a girl. Of the nickname possibilities, I like [name]Fifi[/name] best, but I’m biased. It’s what I call my dd, [name]Faith[/name].

[name]Matilda[/name] - [name]One[/name] of my current name crushes. I agree with a PP, though. If your DH doesn’t like it, you should cross it off the list.

[name]Beatrice[/name] - [name]Beatrice[/name] is on the top of my dh’s list, and it’s growing on me, largely because of the nicknames [name]Bess[/name], [name]Betsy[/name] and [name]Tess[/name]. I’m starting to really love it, as a matter of fact

[name]Cordelia[/name] - I’ve never been a fan of this one, even with my great love of L.M. [name]Montgomery[/name]. I am a little curious about what you think of a PP’s suggestion of [name]Cordelia[/name] [name]Clementine[/name], or better yet, [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Cordelia[/name], and calling her CC. That’s terribly cute

[name]Drucilla[/name] - I used to really like this name, and its nickname, [name]Dru[/name]. Now I’m not a fan of [name]Drucilla[/name], and even though I still love [name]Dru[/name], it’s far too similar to [name]Tru[/name] to be usable.

[name]Clementine[/name] - I like the name, but wouldn’t want two kids with rhyming names.
[name]Beatrice[/name] - [name]Love[/name] the name, but the nickname “[name]Bea[/name]” rhymes with “G” and you might have trouble when calling the kids
[name]Matilda[/name] - I agree with the others - if hubby doesn’t like it, it should go.
[name]Cordelia[/name] - I like this too. CC is a nice nickname - also possibly “[name]Cory[/name]” or “[name]Cora[/name]”?
[name]Felicity[/name] - An alternate nickname is Fellie (knew someone who went by this)
[name]Evelyn[/name] - my daughter’s name, and seems like a good fit with your family. Her nickname is [name]Evie[/name].

[name]Hi[/name] lovely to have you on nameberry and you have great naming style!

Siblings [name]Guthrie[/name], [name]Adeline[/name], [name]Sullivan[/name], [name]Truman[/name], [name]Penelope[/name]

Your list [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Clementine[/name], [name]Felicity[/name] and [name]Matilda[/name]

Firstly I adore [name]Clementine[/name] and [name]Adeline[/name] I am not sure how I like them in a sibset but singly they are gorgeous.

Re [name]Beatrice[/name] I feel a bit neutral towards her although the nn of [name]Bea[/name] is attractive. [name]Beatrix[/name] is more energetic and appealing to me.
[name]Felicity[/name] doesn’t have the spunk of the other siblings names although it is a pretty name with a nice meaning
[name]Matilda[/name] is a big favourite of mine and I love the nn of [name]Tilly[/name] for her, it is a shame that DH doesn’t like her.

Here are a few ideas taking into account that we do not suggest any names starting with S, P, G, A or T.

I really love [name]Willow[/name] and the combo of [name]Willow[/name] [name]Wren[/name] or [name]Clementine[/name] [name]Willow[/name]
[name]Coraline[/name] similar ending to [name]Clementine[/name] with the cute nn’s of [name]Cora[/name] and [name]Coral[/name]
[name]Emmeline[/name] a beautiful name hampered by the popularity of [name]Emma[/name] perhaps a middle name spot?
[name]Helena[/name] is a serene, refined person, very elegant and lady like with nn of [name]Lena[/name] or [name]Leni[/name]
[name]Lilian[/name] and [name]Adeline[/name] are beautiful together a great match
[name]Cordelia[/name] is very pretty as is [name]Cecelia[/name] and I also love the combo of [name]Cecelia[/name] [name]Willow[/name], SO much.
[name]One[/name] of my all time favourites is [name]Juliet[/name] and she makes a gorgeous fit but maybe too popular?
[name]Cornelia[/name] again an elegant girl with the nn of [name]Leah[/name] ([name]Lia[/name]). I can’t get onboard with [name]Corny[/name] as a nn though
For a touch of the Greek classics [name]Xanthe[/name] (prnd [name]Zan[/name] thee) is beautiful and means blonde haired.
[name]Imogen[/name] or [name]Eugenie[/name]
If you like [name]Dora[/name] you may like [name]Eudora[/name]
[name]Davina[/name] a pretty name that is seldom heard
[name]Marguerite[/name] or [name]Margot[/name]
[name]Lucinda[/name]

Congrats! It certainly gets harder with each addition. I have 5 kids and I feel myself weakening on the unique first initial as I contemplate names for future children.

I really like [name]Felicity[/name] and like the nickname Fliss. I like the nickname [name]Bea[/name] more than the name [name]Beatrice[/name]. I do know that my 10 year old son really like the name [name]Beatrice[/name] because of some book he read which means that it’s out there in pop culture so it could be a real up-and-comer.

I wonder if the book was Divergent? I haven’t read it, but The [name]Baby[/name] Name [name]Wizard[/name] did an article wondering if the names of the lead characters, [name]Beatrice[/name] and [name]Tobias[/name], would increase in popularity.

There’s also a movie based on it coming out in 2014.

So, yes, that might be worth noting if you’re considering [name]Beatrice[/name].

Wow! I came to the right place. After a long discussion with my husband the other night, I was almost able to set aside my rhyming sibling aversion (because he insisted I was the ONLY person alive who would even notice). I feel a little vindicated that others would and do notice those things.

Our children do most often go by nicknames, even in school. But when I fill out forms, scrapbooks, [name]Christmas[/name] cards, etc., I think I would always see those -ine’s and cringe. :-(. Why is [name]Clementine[/name] such a cute name? I didn’t know there was a celebrity connection, so maybe it is best avoided anyway.

I can’t get on board with [name]Drucilla[/name]/[name]Drusilla[/name] and DH can’t get on board with [name]Matilda[/name], so I guess I really have to cross those out.

My favorite of the leftovers has to be [name]Felicity[/name], hands down, so I’m thinking that’s the way we’ll probably head. I kind of like the Fliss nickname, and I know [name]Fifi[/name] will happen naturally.

Thanks soooo much for taking the time to respond. :-). Can’t wait to see all my little ducklings’ together and see how we mesh. I’m 33 weeks, so it’s coming up quickly.

[name]Glad[/name] that you like Fliss for [name]Felicity[/name]. I had hubbys convinced to let me use [name]Felicity[/name] nn Fliss until I decided that I didn’t love it with my last name since my last name starts with a T.

What about [name]Wilhelmina[/name]? You could get to the nicknames you like, it has its own unique initial and matches the siblings names, especially the sisters.

I like [name]Beatrice[/name] or [name]Beatrix[/name].

A few others:
[name]Genevieve[/name]
[name]Imogen[/name]
[name]Josephina[/name]
[name]Virginia[/name]
[name]Marguerite[/name]
[name]Bernadette[/name]
[name]Millicent[/name]
[name]Eleanora[/name]

[name]How[/name] about [name]Clementia[/name]? [name]Just[/name] a suggestion.

Between your list and your husbands my favorite name is [name]Cordelia[/name], and her nickname could be [name]Cody[/name]. Good luck!

I love [name]Matilda[/name], shame he doesn’t like it :frowning:
From your list I would go with: [name]Felicity[/name]

Others (sorry for repeats): [name]Tabitha[/name], [name]Evelyn[/name], [name]Theodora[/name], [name]Alexandra[/name], [name]Delaney[/name], [name]Anastasia[/name], [name]Lillian[/name], [name]Charlotte[/name]?

Good [name]Luck[/name] x

[name]Hope[/name] you check back in. My favorite of all your choices is [name]Cordelia[/name]-- very underappreciated classic and perfect with your children’s names. I am not a fan of [name]Cody[/name] as a nickname or [name]Cory[/name] but there are so many other great possibilities.

I also like [name]Felicity[/name] for you.

Others have suggested some great alternatives but in the end, I can’t imagine two choices better than those!

[name]Just[/name] a quick thought I didn’t see mentioned: The nickname I naturally gravitate toward with [name]Cordelia[/name] is [name]Delly[/name], which I think is sweet and fits in with your other kids’ nicknames!
Best of luck whatever you choose!

[name]Clementine[/name] would be far away in birth order from [name]Adaline[/name] so you would hardly ever say their names together unless they both are in truble at the same time  If you were to list your kids it would be [name]Guthrie[/name], [name]Adaline[/name], [name]Truman[/name] [name]Sullivan[/name], [name]Penelope[/name] and Clemintine. Or it would be G, [name]Addie[/name], [name]Tru[/name], [name]Sully[/name], [name]Pepper[/name] and [name]Mimi[/name]. So I do not see a problem with the two having the same ending. I love [name]Cordelia[/name] and want to push you to use this, but thats my own bias. I feel like [name]Beatrice[/name]/ [name]Bea[/name] is going to have the same fate as [name]Penelope[/name]… she is climbing and is on everyone’s short list right now, so I feel like she is 4 more years and one celebrity away from blowing up. Other fanciful classic names I think would go well would be [name]Rosalie[/name] (nn [name]Rose[/name], [name]Allie[/name], [name]Sally[/name], [name]Roz[/name]) [name]Florence[/name] ([name]Flower[/name], [name]Flo[/name], Fliss, [name]Floss[/name], [name]Wren[/name]) My favorite classic nickname is [name]Birdie[/name], she is not as up and comming as [name]Hatty[/name], [name]Millie[/name] [name]Josie[/name], but fits well… Formal names for [name]Birdie[/name] could be [name]Bernadette[/name], [name]Beatrice[/name], [name]Bernice[/name], Bergitta, [name]Bridget[/name] and of course bird names like [name]Wren[/name], [name]Raven[/name], [name]Robin[/name] ect.
