The Willa Dilemma

Currently [name]Willa[/name] is high on my list. My personal naming preference is usually for formal names that use nicknames, but I don’t feel like this is always necessary of course. For a while I’ve thought of [name]Willa[/name] as a stand alone name, but recently have been mulling the possibility of using the full name [name]Wilhelmina[/name] as a route to [name]Willa[/name]. I’m not a fan of this spelling though, so was hoping for some [name]Berry[/name] opinions on other legitimate spelling options. (i.e. no Wyllameenah suggestions please.)

Also what are your thoughts? [name]Willa[/name] in it’s own right or [name]Wilhelmina[/name] nn [name]Willa[/name]?

Geesh so much to consider! Thank goodness little [name]Willa[/name] is just imagined right now! Hate to think what it will be like when I’m actually naming a little person!

Oh and an afterthought…I have this same issue with [name]Calla[/name]! [name]Calista[/name] nn [name]Calla[/name]? [name]Calla[/name] on it’s own? [name]Calla[/name] as a nn for something else? [name]Feel[/name] free to throw an opinion on this one out there as well.

I love the name [name]Willa[/name], but I don’t like [name]Wilhelmina[/name].

I think [name]Willa[/name] fits in with your other favorites. I’ve seen [name]Willamina[/name], but I don’t know how legit it is.

I really like [name]Willa[/name]!
I think it can definitely stand alone, but I also think [name]Wilhelmina[/name] has a lot of vintage charm.
However, if you don’t love [name]Wilhelmina[/name], don’t hesitate to go with just [name]Willa[/name] - it’s great in its own right!

I don’t like [name]Wilhelmina[/name] spelled any other way. [name]Willa[/name] is better than [name]Willamina[/name], in my opinion.

I agree with araminta. I like [name]Wilhelmina[/name], but I can see your hesitation. I wouldn’t think twice about [name]Willa[/name] on it’s own. I actually know a [name]Willa[/name], just [name]Willa[/name]. It suits her so well and can be formal and relaxed.

I really like [name]Willa[/name] on its own. [name]Willamina[/name] seems really legit to me, it’s a Scottish variant. Depending on your heritage, that might be closer to the truth than heavily [name]German[/name] [name]Wilhelmina[/name] (not that that really matters). [name]Wilhelmina[/name] also makes me really think of the modeling company! I mean, by English rules we should have [name]Williamina[/name] or Williamine or something, but we don’t, so [name]Willa[/name] is totally plausible as a full English name.

[name]Willamina[/name] is nice to my ears and I like that it’s opened up some [name]Mina[/name]/[name]Minnie[/name] etc nn possibilities, although you might not like those. It contains the word “lamina”, which means wing, I think, and is an anatomical term.

Willadean and [name]Willabelle[/name] are out there. I like them in theory, not necessarily to use.

Best wishes!

Well, I know [name]Willa[/name] can stand on it’s own. But I really like [name]Wilhelmina[/name] a lot. It looks so heavy but feels so light when said. Like mousse! Looks heavy, sounds light!

I’ve also seen [name]Williamina[/name] myself, but that looks weird. [name]Wilhelmina[/name]'s the way to go, I think. Then she not only has the option of [name]Willa[/name] but also [name]Mina[/name]/[name]Minnie[/name]/[name]Minna[/name]/[name]Min[/name], if she wants when older. So my vote goes for [name]Wilhelmina[/name] on the BC and [name]Willa[/name] for every day!

For the record, I have a [name]Josephine[/name] who regularly cycles through her many nicknames. She got up this morning and told me “Mama, I’m [name]Fifi[/name] today!” And she was.

As for [name]Calla[/name], it could be a nickname for [name]Caroline[/name] & [name]Calanthe[/name] (which I’ve seen, twice) off the top of my head, besides [name]Callista[/name]. I actually prefer [name]Calla[/name] on it’s own, it reminds me of the lily.

I’m the same. I love longer/formal names with nicknames but then there are always shorter names ([name]Luke[/name], [name]Ada[/name], [name]Owen[/name]) that I fall in love with and just don’t like (or they don’t have) longer forms. And I’m matchy so it bugs me

[name]Willemina[/name] is the Dutch spelling (legit). It’s a stretch but you could also use [name]Willa[/name] for [name]Gwendolin/name.

[name]Calla[/name] and [name]Willa[/name] are some of my favorite names, especially together!
I think their true beauty shines as a stand alone name. All paperwork would cover them up!
Honestly, [name]Wilhelmina[/name] is one of those names that ppl love to pick on. I understand its beauty as do most name lovers, but the average non name lover uses [name]Wilhelmina[/name] as an example of a hideous ridiculously funny name for a baby…my friend gets a kick out of unusual big names…ex: “you could always name her [name]Wilhelmina[/name]” followed by a laugh…sigh.

[name]Willa[/name] is awesome, but I don’t like the full name. I think when some people hear [name]WIlla[/name] they hear “[name]Willamina[/name]” however it’s spelled, so that’s the only downfall to the name for me. I would hate it if people asked…oh is your full name [name]Willamina[/name]? And I think that name might get that a lot, kwim? I would name her [name]WIlla[/name] as long as you don’t mind people asking you that and it seems you wouldn’t as you don’t mind the full name. Soooo, I think willa is perfect for you!

Oops, I missed the last bit.

Like [name]Willa[/name], I think [name]Calla[/name] can stand alone, but also has some gorgeous options like [name]Calista[/name], [name]Calliope[/name], [name]Calanthe[/name] and [name]Calypso[/name].

[name]Calliope[/name]… but you probably will have thought of that if you saw my discussion topic on [name]Calliope[/name]. I haven’t decided if it will be [name]Calla[/name] or [name]Callia[/name], but not [name]Callie[/name]…

I think [name]Willa[/name] can easily stand on its own. But if there must be something… I prefer [name]Willamina[/name] to [name]Wilhelmina[/name]. But, what’s one opinion…
