Expecting our baby girl in about 6 weeks. Loving the name [name_f]Thea[/name_f] but wondering if it’s too close to [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]?
My FIL’s wife is named [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]. No direct connection to [name_f]Thea[/name_f] (her nn is [name_f]Terri[/name_f]) but since [name_f]Thea[/name_f] could be a nn for [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] it’s got me thinking. We get along okay with her but some members of my family and my MIL’s family don’t really care for her. Also, when I was pregnant with my older daughter my FIL asked us if we were going to name our daughter after MIL who had passed a few years earlier and DH told him we weren’t doing honor names (we named her a different name with the same initials as MIL). So I don’t know if I really want people to think there’s a connection but I also don’t know if I want to eliminate one of my favorite names over it.
No I don’t think [name_f]Thea[/name_f] & [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] is soo similar honestly I didn’t even connect with [name_f]Thea[/name_f] being a nickname for [name_f]Theresa[/name_f]. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is a nickname for [name_f]Theodora[/name_f] whereas I would say the nickname for [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] is [name_f]Terri[/name_f] or [name_f]Tess[/name_f]. I honestly wouldn’t worry about that connection. [name_f]Thea[/name_f] is lovely!
To me they are two completely different names and I would never thought of [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as a nickname for [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] actually…now that you pointed it out I can see it but it sounds weird to me
I think you’ll be just fine— as similar as the letters are, the names feel very different. I think the soft ‘th’ in [name_f]Thea[/name_f] as opposed to the hard ‘T’ of [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] makes a big difference.
A close friend was once doubting the name [name_f]Mara[/name_f] due to associations with a [name_f]Marianne[/name_f]… five years later, her daughter loves her name and nobody has ever connected the two. I think it’s easy to overthink it when you’re seeing a name written down a lot, but in real life unless two names are phonetically super-similar it won’t be an issue.
Thank you all! [name_f]My[/name_f] husband thinks that even though the letters are part of the name that since the sounds aren’t really similar it’s not something that anyone would ever think of.
Its not too close if you know someone by one name or the other.
It would be too close only if [name_f]Thea[/name_f] and [name_f]Theresa[/name_f] were names for two sisters.
