Here is a list of names from Stupid Kid Names.com that I thought might interest you guys…
NOTE: The author of the website sometimes lists legitimate ethnic names ([name]Magda[/name], [name]Zipporah[/name]), or even relatively ordinary “English” names ([name]Aiden[/name], [name]Howard[/name]), as “stupid” based on his personal preferences. I tried to take all the recognizable, useable names off the list before posting. Sorry if I missed any.

Reminds me of the “Always [name]Sunny[/name] in Philedelphia” episode with the name ShaDynasty which spelled out is “shady nasty” lol
A lot of those are terrible, but a few are legitimate - for example, [name]Antigone[/name], Bedivere, Belphoebe, [name]Branwen[/name], Briseis, [name]Ffion[/name] and [name]Newland[/name]. A few aren’t bad as made-up names go ([name]Garland[/name], Halo).
Adding extra letters (I know a [name]Saraha[/name], pronounced like [name]Sara[/name] or [name]Sarah[/name]) seems pointless to me. Adding ‘y’s’ to replace other letters also seems pointless. I know someone who recently had a son named [name]Haidyn[/name]. Yep. Pronounced like [name]Hayden[/name], just letters switched and replaced. He’ll be spelling that for people his entire life! (Not like it matters at this point. Everyone with regular spellings have to now, too, due to those trying to make a name more unique by changing the spelling.)
Changing the spelling doesn’t make the name any different. [name]Cayden[/name], Kaidyn, [name]Kaedyn[/name], Kaedin, [name]Kayden[/name], Kaidyn, etc. are all the same name. It’s still pronounced the same in the end. It just makes it harder for others to spell in the long run.
While I disagree with the idea of overly unique names, I still say that if you like it even after considering all of the possible factors, then use it. As long as a name isn’t overly hurtful to a mass of others (the family with an [name]Adolf[/name] Hitler, [name]Aryan[/name] Nation and Hinler for an example!), then it can be an inconvenience in the long run, but nothing more than that.
My husband went to school with a girl named Champagne Killer [last name] >.<
And I was in junior high with a girl named Mercedes Benz [last name] and a little Mexican girl named America.
This college I’m at right now seems to be filled with people with these kinds of names…i’ve met a Shardeney, La’Porche, Princess, etc.
That list was difficult to read. More letters does not make the name better. And I’m really hoping that whoever used the name Travesty just liked the sound of it and didn’t choose it for its meaning.
Some were intriguing, though. I can see liking the name Tomorrow. It has a nice sound and I can see someone seeing it as a hopeful, forward-looking name.
I think [name]Romeo[/name] Cassanova is my favourite. So awkward, but at the same time, it has a great sound to it.
So most of these are horrendous, but there are actually a few I like. [name]Antigone[/name], Belphoebe and [name]Pluto[/name] are kind of interesting but I love them. I like [name]Hadley[/name] and [name]Kensington[/name] a lot, but only when spelled correctly. Also if this is a first and middle name, then [name]Romeo[/name] Cassanova is kind of cute. I can’t believe how Kheightlynne is spelled. My name is [name]Kaitlin[/name] and I’d hate it so much more spelled like that!
[name]Add[/name] “Labiya” to the list–it was in the birth announcements in my area recently.
Aside: PP already mentioned this, but a lot of these names are legitimate and not “youneeq” spellings: [name]Antigone[/name], Bedivere, [name]Branwen[/name], Briseis, [name]Caprice[/name], [name]Lettice[/name] and [name]Cotton[/name], for example, are all pretty well-established names. I think someone might have been thinking of the [name]Doctor[/name] (as in [name]Doctor[/name] Who) with “[name]Doctor[/name]” and The [name]Crow[/name] with [name]Draven[/name]. [name]Fanny[/name] and [name]Garland[/name] sound like they might have come from a Victorian novel–in fact, [name]Fanny[/name] was a character in one of [name]Alcott[/name]'s novels. [name]Keziah[/name] is from the Bible; [name]Brick[/name] is from [name]Cat[/name] on a Hot [name]Tin[/name] Roof, and Hawkeye is from both [name]James[/name] Fenimore [name]Cooper[/name]'s novels and MAS*H. I’ve also known a [name]Stormy[/name] and a Truett and never thought their names were weird or anything.
Other than that…I agree that 99% of the names on his list are completely unusable. (For example, I love Antigone, but couldn’t use it at all for several reasons.) The gross misspellings of so many of them are really and truly terrible. Check out the misspelled J names, for example. Gag.
I know a woman whose daughters are Tapestry, [name]Cherish[/name], and [name]Liberty[/name]. (I don’t know what she is thinking).
And I really hope there aren’t kids out there named Satan, Unwanted and Atheist Evolution. Sad.
Some of these I’m shocked to see on this list, especially:
[name]Alexandru[/name] - The Romanian version of [name]Alexander[/name]
[name]Antigone[/name] - Greek mythology name
Bedivere - One of [name]King[/name] [name]Arthur[/name]‘s Knights
Belphoebe - Used by [name]Edmund[/name] [name]Spenser[/name] for his poem “The Faerie [name]Queen[/name]” in 1590
Briseis - [name]Achilles[/name]’ love interest
[name]Cotton[/name] - I adore [name]Cotton[/name]
[name]Draven[/name] - Name of the main character in “The [name]Crow[/name]”
[name]Fanny[/name] - I understand the slang so I understand why it’s on this list, but it has so much history!
[name]Ffion[/name] - A favorite, Welsh for “foxglove”
Kacper - Polish form of the name [name]Jasper[/name]
[name]Lettice[/name] - Medieval form of the name [name]Letitia[/name]
[name]Pepper[/name] - Adorable
[name]Pluto[/name] - A [name]Roman[/name] God (Besides a planet)
Quetzalcoatl - Okay, maybe not the name for a modern child, but that doesn’t make it a bad name! It’s the Nahuatl name of a God
[name]Spirit[/name] - Not the worst name out there
[name]Tanaquil[/name] - Beautiful name of a famous ballerina
[name]Torquil[/name] - A handsome Scottish name
Voltairine - Name of anarchist Voltairine de Cleyre, after the philospher Voltaire
Ylva - A Scandinavian name meaning “she-wolf”
Xochiquetzal - Aztec [name]Goddess[/name] of love, means “flower feather”
However some of them are truly sad but I felt the need to point out these few names.
Thanks for the info, Ribbons, but could you honestly be introduced to a person with one of these names and not come close to laughing or rolling your eyes? In modern American society, I mean, not Romania or the Middle Ages? Maybe Briseis or Bedivere would be okay, but [name]Pepper[/name]? [name]Cotton[/name]? [name]Pluto[/name]?? These sound like names for pets at best imo.
Wow. I know some of these are legitimate names, but… All things considered in this list, [name]Cayden[/name]/[name]Kayden[/name]/[name]Caiden[/name]/[name]Caydin[/name] has never looked so good.
I wonder if Sundae and [name]Taffy[/name] are sisters?
I am starting to agree with pp that normal spelling isn’t as much of an advantage any more since it’s not as assumed as it used to be, and I think that will be more and more true for a while at least with up and coming generations. I still prefer standard spellings of course.
But the bigger point I think is that if the name is not blatantly obviously an insult ([name]Charlie[/name] Horse [name]Dick[/name]? Atheist Evolution? If these are real…I sigh and shake head), I’d rather save my judgment for things that matter. If I met an [name]Alexandru[/name] or a [name]Lettice[/name], sure, I wouldn’t laugh. I might raise an eyebrow inwardly but it would go away with time. I’m sure other people would laugh at times but it would go down eventually in most cases. I mean, particularly if [name]Alexandru[/name] is an immigrant, or if [name]Lettice[/name] is a family name. In both cases, as in many here, there maybe a helpful nickname. If Alexnadru goes by [name]Alex[/name] or [name]Lettice[/name] goes by [name]Lettie[/name] or [name]Ettie[/name], some of the difficulty goes away.
I’ll add to the should-this-be-on-here list [name]Bascom[/name]. I can’t find much info about this intriguing name, but it used to regularly make the top 1000 in the early years for which we have records (1880s-1900s, I think), so I think it’s more so-old-people-forgot-it than truly truly left field. I suspect it’s related to Spanish [name]Vasco[/name] like [name]Vasco[/name] Da Gama, from which the last name Vasquez also comes? If it’s prn Bass-come I suppose that’s unfortunate, but I always kind of imagine BahzCOMB, like a French prn. While exotic, it doesn’t really strike me as any more difficult on a kid than [name]Sebastian[/name] or something. Lack of nicknames is a challenge I suppose.
Also [name]Michal[/name] - this is a Biblical girls’ name, the wife of [name]King[/name] [name]David[/name], meeSHALL when I’ve heard it. Headache if it’s a misspelled [name]Michael[/name] or [name]Michelle[/name], but just an unusual-but-relatable Biblical name if not.
Help, my eyes are bleeding!! lol
fuzzycub - Actually, yes, I could. [name]Pepper[/name] is probably better as a nickname for say, [name]Penelope[/name], but it’s still cute. [name]Cotton[/name] I think is a lovely name for a little boy, very handsome. And [name]Pluto[/name] is just plain awesome, I’d love to meet one especially if they were named for the [name]Roman[/name] God. There are worse names out there than [name]Pepper[/name] or [name]Cotton[/name] or [name]Pluto[/name].
I agree with others that many of these names are not awful. I was surprised to see [name]Ceara[/name] on here – that’s the Celtic spelling of [name]Kiera[/name], which is a fairly common name. Others are just very ancient names that are not necessarily horrible – Caractacus, [name]Keziah[/name], [name]Antigone[/name], Bedivere, [name]Torquil[/name], Ylva, [name]Lettice[/name]. I know young women named [name]Lyric[/name] and [name]Draven[/name] – I don’t consider either to be awful names. I actually kind of like [name]Lyric[/name].
Sure, some of these names are truly awful, but lots are perfectly fine. I’d be sad if I found my unusual name on a list of “stupid” or “awful” kid names.
[name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Pepper[/name]. I was shocked to see it on this list.
But the world and this site are bigger than [name]North[/name] [name]America[/name]. Whoever put [name]Ffion[/name] on there is just showing their ignorance of a name from another culture that is perfectly acceptable to use.
