They hate it, we love it - baby girl Apple

My fiancé and I are absolutely stuck on girls names. We agree the name should be unique without being too strange. my first choice was Porcelina [name]Opal[/name], NN “[name]Poppy[/name]” after a smashing pumpkins song, but that was vetoed immediately as he thinks it’s a stripper name.

[name]Long[/name] story short, we have only agreed on one name we both love:

[name]Apple[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Rowe[/name]

Our families hate it, we love it, and we’re honestly stumped at any other ideas. [name]Lucille[/name] was my grandmother’s middle name, so we think we should use it if at all possible.

But I need opinions…are people going to think we are tree huggers, ipad junkies, or gwenyth Paltrow superfans? Help!!!

If I met parents of an [name]Apple[/name], I wouldn’t think they were tree huggers, but I would think they were either big fans of [name]Apple[/name] or [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow/[name]Chris[/name] [name]Martin[/name] superfans.

I’m afraid [name]Apple[/name] doesn’t work as a first name for me. I know people will say that [name]Clementine[/name] is a fruit name, but there’s a HUGE difference there, and that’s the fact [name]Clementine[/name] was a given name before it became the name of a fruit.

I’ve always thought a good alternative to [name]Apple[/name], is the name [name]Pomona[/name], which means “fruit tree.” [name]Pomona[/name] was the [name]Roman[/name] goddess of fruit trees and it’s from her name the French word for [name]Apple[/name] (pomme) came from. I could picture a little [name]Pomona[/name] who was nicknamed “[name]Apple[/name]” and I certainly think [name]Pomona[/name] is better as a first name.

(Yes, I know, [name]Pomona[/name] is a town in [name]California[/name]… but it was a first name before being a place name… so I don’t count it as an out and out place name).

First, if you love it, do it!
Second, I think it goes with the recent trends. For example, [name]Clementine[/name] & [name]Olive[/name]. I also like that your mixing a newer name with a traditional, family-honoring middle. Once your baby is born, your family will forget about the name and just enjoy her.

I like [name]Apple[/name]! I also adore apple trees and apples are delicious - the reason [name]Gwyn[/name] wanted it for her daughter was the wholesomeness, sweetness and wisdom of the apple. [name]How[/name] cute is that? And [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow is amazing, I love her. I never think of apple the company when I hear [name]Apple[/name]; I think of the fruit, the trees, apple jam, apple cake, apple bread, the most wisdomous fruit. I think you should go for it, never let your family sway you from the name you love.

If you want something else, there’s [name]Pomona[/name] as [name]Maggie[/name] said, or [name]Pomeline[/name] or [name]Apolline[/name].

I think of [name]Gwyneth[/name] straight away. [name]Appolonia[/name] is very nice and you could call her [name]Apple[/name].

I honestly think it’s a lose-lose choice. It’s not really unique when you take one of the most “out there” celeb baby names and use it on your own child. I see [name]Apple[/name] as a name coming across as more of a personal statement, rather than with your child’s best interests in mind (I very much doubt that’s the case, but it rubs me the wrong way because of that).
[name]Apple[/name] [name]Martin[/name] is probably growing up just fine being named [name]Apple[/name] [name]Martin[/name], and I’m sure there are many, many people with much stranger names who don’t run in to any issues.
What is it about [name]Apple[/name] that you love?
While looking for similarly themed lists for suggestions, I came across this article which as been discussed here before:

I’ve seen an incredible amount of name remorse posts here- so many that I thought the board was full of fakers who couldn’t make up their minds, but it turns out name remorse is actually a really big ‘thing’.

When you said Porcelina [name]Opal[/name], my first thought was [name]Opaline[/name] or [name]Ottoline[/name]. I [name]LOVE[/name] [name]Opal[/name] and [name]Poppy[/name], by the way! I think [name]Opaline[/name] or [name]Opalina[/name] “[name]Poppy[/name]” works great. [name]Opaline[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] repeats some sounds, and honestly, I love that too. Most of my own favourite combos repeat L, EE, O and S sounds, actually. Ooh, [name]Opalina[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] sounds even better!

With Porcelina, [name]Opal[/name], [name]Poppy[/name] and [name]Apple[/name] all being top thoughts for you, I’m going to go with some naturey names that I think work well (and aren’t ‘stripperish’, but I’m a bad judge for that, haha) :
[name]Linnea[/name]
[name]Bryony[/name]/ [name]Briony[/name]
[name]Jessamine[/name]
[name]Coral[/name]
[name]Garnet[/name] (I love this on a boy, but it can work on a girl, too)
Gleam (I know someone who has this as a last name, and I think it’s pretty neat)
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Pomeline[/name]/ Pomellina/ [name]Pomona[/name] (all are very apple-y to me. “pomme” is apple in French, and apparently this name is related. I think you could get away with calling her [name]Apple[/name], without putting it down as her legal name. [name]Pomeline[/name] and Pomellina are very close to Porcelina, too, so maybe that works to combine Porcelina and [name]Apple[/name] without your SO thinking of strippers?)
[name]Meadow[/name] (what makes [name]Meadow[/name] any better than [name]Apple[/name]? Nothing, but I know a [name]Meadow[/name] so I find it more wearable, whereas the only [name]Apple[/name] I know is the celeb baby)

Any honestly, it’s your child and you won’t be the only one with a little [name]Apple[/name] out there. [name]Blythe[/name] [name]Danner[/name] got used to having a granddaughter named [name]Apple[/name], and I’m sure your parents will too.

Honestly, I kind of like [name]Apple[/name]! I would rather name my child [name]Apple[/name] than [name]Everly[/name], which I absolutely dislike. I actually didn’t think of [name]Gwyneth[/name] or the company when you said [name]Apple[/name]. I just saw…well…an apple. A nice, red apple. You should go for it.

I like [name]Apple[/name], too! I mean, it’s a GP, and it seems sort of crazy to actually use, but this is coming from someone with an extremely safe naming style. I just love the imagery of apples and their sweet and innocent and sort of scholarly… it’s a really cool name, I think. I like the idea of [name]Apolline[/name] (or even [name]Appolonia[/name]) with the nn [name]Apple[/name]? I think that’s quite sweet.

I remember years ago someone on another forum had been considering the combo [name]Apple[/name] [name]Mia[/name], and that’s when I fell for it, I still love that combo. [name]Apple[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] is really sweet, too, though, and I love the significance of [name]Lucille[/name]! I think [name]Apple[/name] [name]Lou[/name] would be an adorable nn, too! I would love to see someone brave enough to use [name]Apple[/name], and I think [name]Apple[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] is great–I just don’t think I could go with it personally. I’m not sure that really helps you, though, haha, sorry.

I think [name]Apple[/name] is super sweet. I love nature names and this one is more unique. I love how feminine and soft it sounds. Oh well if your family doesn’t like it, its your choice to make, and you both love it.
I also like your choice [name]Opal[/name] Would the fiancé approve of [name]Opal[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] Row? pretty! Its less “strippery” without Porcelina perhaps?

I really like the suggestion pf [name]Pomona[/name]!

I think of Goop right away when I hear [name]Apple[/name] used as a name (and I’m not a very big fan of hers - to say the least). However, I don’t mind the name and I think it would make a quite lovely middle name (I think it’s too out-there as a first). In terms of celebrity baby names, it’s not nearly as horrific as [name]Jermajesty[/name], [name]Rainbow[/name] or [name]Bluebell[/name].

I also totally stand behind the idea of using [name]Pomeline[/name] as a possible substitute. It’s a wonderful name.

I honestly totally love [name]Apple[/name]! I loved it before [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow had anything to do with it. I used to name the daughter in my [name]Sim[/name] family “[name]Mary[/name] [name]Apple[/name]”. Did anyone else play that game? If I were to use it in real life, I would probably use it as a middle name like that. I wouldn’t be brave enough to put it first. My hubby turned it down, though. Coincidentally, our daughter’s middle name is [name]Lucille[/name] after my grandmother, too.

I like the suggestions of [name]Opal[/name]/[name]Opaline[/name], [name]Pomona[/name] (nn [name]Apple[/name]), [name]Poppy[/name], and [name]Bryony[/name]. You could also just switch it to [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Apple[/name] instead. [name]Lucy[/name] [name]Apple[/name] is cute!

I have to agree with some of the comments. If I met baby [name]Apple[/name] I would think you were a big [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow (barf) fan. She ruined the name for everyone, sorry.

What do you like about the name? It’s very simple and sweet, nature inspired but unusual.

[name]How[/name] about:

[name]Wren[/name]
[name]Lark[/name]
[name]Starling[/name]
[name]Azalea[/name]
[name]Lilac[/name]
Alyssum
[name]Amaryllis[/name]
[name]Calla[/name]-- [name]Love[/name] [name]Calla[/name] [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Rowe[/name]!
[name]Marigold[/name]
[name]Zahra[/name]
[name]Aster[/name]

I like [name]Apple[/name]. It’s a sweet name.

I think straightaway of [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow. I don’t particularly care for it. I think [name]Pomeline[/name]/Pommeline/Pommelina, etc. are a great compromise between [name]Apple[/name] and Porcelina, and I think you could use [name]Poppy[/name] as a nickname.

If you really love it…then go for it.

However, be prepared for a lot of " Like [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow’s daughter??"

I find [name]Apple[/name] nice and usable for all the reasons that have been mentioned. I like the historical, mythological, symbolic and popular culture associations of the fruit (okay, except maybe [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow). As far as nature names go, [name]Apple[/name] is similar in style to names like [name]Wren[/name], [name]Blue[/name], [name]Lark[/name], or [name]Lilac[/name]; it’s certainly nicer (and more substantial) than [name]Neveah[/name] or Mckinleigh. That being said, do give her a more “serious” middle name like [name]Lucille[/name] to give her options when she grows up.

If you decide that [name]Apple[/name] is too adventurous for you and you want to appease the grandparents, you still have 2 options:

  1. [name]Tuck[/name] [name]Apple[/name] in the middle: something like “[name]Mary[/name] [name]Apple[/name] [name]Jones[/name]” or “[name]Lucille[/name] [name]Apple[/name] [name]Jones[/name]” would be seen as a very normal name to have on birth announcements or résumées (lots of people have uncommon surnames as middles), but you could still call her [name]Apple[/name] at home.

  2. Use [name]Apple[/name] as a nickname: [name]Appoline[/name] and [name]Appolonia[/name] are the the obvious choices, but you also have [name]Pomeline[/name], Pommelina, [name]Avalon[/name], or maybe a type of [name]Apple[/name] (like the [name]Author[/name] [name]Plum[/name] Sykes, whose name is actually [name]Victoria[/name] and was nicknamed so after the [name]Victoria[/name] [name]Plum[/name]). [name]Ambrosia[/name], [name]Aurora[/name], [name]Gala[/name], [name]Calypso[/name], [name]Luna[/name], [name]Opal[/name] (more in List of apple cultivars - Wikipedia).

Instead of [name]Apple[/name], how about [name]Apolline[/name] or [name]Pomeline[/name]? I think they’re both adorable names and sound great with [name]Lucille[/name] [name]Rowe[/name].

[name]Apple[/name] is okay, but I immediately think of [name]Gwyneth[/name] Paltrow. If you adore the name, then go for it, otherwise be aware that almost every person you meet will dislike the name and question your motives for choosing it.

I think [name]Apple[/name] grows on you. I think a great way to know if it is right for your family is to ask, would you want that to be your name? If the answer is yes, then it’s likely a good fit!

I think it’s sweet that you want to honor family…but I will say I heavily prefer [name]Lucy[/name] to [name]Lucille[/name].
