So we have baby number 2 on the way… another boy! We like the name Malachy (Mal-a-key), we have A LOT of Irish connections so like that it is Irish. I did read somewhere that there was a Malachai (Mal-a-kai, a biblical name) character in a horror movie called children of the corn. Now whilst this does not bother me in the slightest, what does niggle me is the fact that the other main character along with Malachai was Isaac. These two characters were knife yielding parents killers!
The reason I EVEN bring this up is because our first son is called… yep you guessed it… Isaac! Haha. Of course.
Is this a silly connection? I just worry people might associate my boys with these characters, or people ask me if they are named after the kids in the movie.
Malachy and Malachai are actually two names with two origins but they sounds quite similar and I just wanted some outside opinions on it!
If it helps I believe [name_m]Malachy[/name_m] is pronounced more like Malakey. [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] and [name_m]Malachy[/name_m] are a great sibling set. I think people would be more likely to pronounce [name_m]Malachy[/name_m] as [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] than associate your sons with the horror movie. But the movie is a cult classic that has been rebooted in the 21st century. I wouldn’t worry about it because your boys’ friends will likely not know the reference so there’s no concern for teasing, you may get asked by adults but I would think even that would be extremely rare especially if you use the Malakey pronunciation.
I’ve heard of and even seen the film you’re talking about and wouldn’t have ever thought of the connection. The names are Biblical to me before anything else, honestly, and I think they make a great sibset!
I think as long as you don’t use the “Kai” pronunciation, most people won’t understand or pay any mind to it. I’m a horror geek so I’d probably think about how close the names were but I definitely wouldn’t ask if you named them after the characters because who wants to name their kids after kids who killed their parents? Lol
I don’t think the movie is a big deal since [name_m]Issac[/name_m] and [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] are both Biblical names first in my mind, so even if you used [name_m]Malachi[/name_m] I doubt people would think you were naming you kids after the children of the corn. [name_m]Even[/name_m] less of an issue with [name_m]Malachy[/name_m] pronounced differently from [name_m]Malachi[/name_m].
Nah, I wouldn’t worry about it. I don’t think that that movie is super popular. Now that you mean [name_m]Malachi[/name_m], I vaguely remember that name w/that origin, pronunciation & spelling being associated w/the horror movie. I had no idea that [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] was his brother’s name. And [name_m]Isaac[/name_m] is a very well known name, so it’s not like you’re picking two unique names that people have never heard outside the movie, you know? Anyway, love [name_m]Malachy[/name_m]! It’s my nephew’s name, & it’s fun & spunky & sporty & lovable like him.
Personally I am a big horror movie fan and whenever I hear the name Malachai, Children of the Corn is the first thing I think of. I think just because it was a unique name it became heavily associated with that movie. I know [name_m]Malachy[/name_m] is a different pronunciation, but when I saw the name without reading your pronunciation I assumed it was pronounced the same, so you may need to be prepared to correct people often. I see a lot of people saying that they didn’t even think of the connection. Idk if it’s my age, where I live (an area where there’s a lot of corn fields lol) or what but I feel like everyone recognizes Children of the Corn even if you’re not a big horror movie fan. But these comments make me think maybe I’m wrong??
