This makes me angry

Okay so the caps were a little unnecessary but I just need to rant right now.

I don’t understand why people think that [name]Emily[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] are next to identical names that you can switch out for one another. Like [name]Emily[/name] is too popular so you pick [name]Amelia[/name] instead. They sound different. They look different. Different beginnings. Different endings. Different meanings. Different origins.

Similar, I guess but it just really annoys me. If you love [name]Emily[/name] use [name]Emily[/name] because it’s classic. Classic names are never too popular. [name]Don[/name]'t switch it out for something that sounds kind of similar because it’s not at all the same name.

THERE RANT OVER WITH.

thank you berries.

Someone might choose [name]Amelia[/name] because it is similar to [name]Emily[/name]. They’re similar in style, name length, and feel.

Not everyone is a name nerd so they don’t know that the names are different in origin. Also, I know that while they are different in origin, they’re still very closely related (in sound), [name]Amelia[/name] being from [name]Amalia[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] being from [name]Aemilia[/name]. [name]Add[/name] to it that the names related to [name]Emily[/name] in other Romance languages are so similar to [name]Amelia[/name] (I’m looking at you, [name]Emilia[/name]), it makes it feel like they are connected.

Well, I loved [name]Oliver[/name], because it was classic and yet had a touch of quirk. I decided to go with [name]Oscar[/name] instead, as it was similar, had a similar ‘vibe’, I liked it just as much and it wasn’t as popular.

I’m sorry, I just really can’t see why that would make anyone upset. I’m not under the impression that the names share an origin (which was completely a non-issue to me); I just like them both and one was lower and more stable on the SSA charts then the other.

I’m kind of baffled by the outrage. It’s no secret that lots of people try to avoid the next big ‘it’ name or the ‘it’ name of five years ago thats now falling ([name]Emily[/name]) in favor of choices lower down on the charts.

I see your point.

I wouldn’t switch one for the other.

[name]Emily[/name] is beautiful, it has a soft and pleasant sound, whereas [name]Amelia[/name] has a unpleasant sound to my ears.

Sorry my tone wasn’t supposed to be like in an uproar or anything! It just is one of those little things that bothers me. I’m not gonna go out and start a petition or something haha.

I understand the whole popular/trendy vs unique battle which I think is the reason a lot of parents use similar names instead of the one they love. But in my opinion [name]Emily[/name] is a classic so it shouldn’t be defined as popular so why would you switch it? Especially to a name like [name]Amelia[/name] which is also very classy but becoming equally as popular.

I agree with this. The names are different but they do have similar sound, length and feel. [name]Emily[/name] is a beautiful name but so it [name]Amelia[/name]. I can easily see how someone who likes the name [name]Emily[/name] could also like the name [name]Amelia[/name].

I totally understand why somebody would like both names, they’re both beautiful!

I think what got me going was multiple people told my sister she could not use [name]Amelia[/name] for her daughter because it’s the same as [name]Emily[/name] which is my name, apparently you cannot have an [name]Emily[/name] AND [name]Amelia[/name] in the family. Sometimes it feels like people think of them as identical not just similar. That’s where I was coming from. Does that make more sense? I have nothing against liking them both cause they are similar, just when people mistake them for identical/interchangeable names.

I get what you mean now. Yes they are different names and [name]Amelia[/name] is still usable, I can also see how it would be confusing to have both an [name]Emily[/name] and an [name]Amelia[/name] in the same family though.

Some people read [name]Amelia[/name] like [name]Emilia[/name], so [name]Emily[/name] and [name]Amelia[/name] might be similar to someone who pronounce [name]Amelia[/name] like [name]Emilia[/name].

Also, I think many parents who want to use rare name don’t care if name is classic or not. These parents want children with unique or semi-unique name, so “classic” names are out of question.

Some people read Amelia like Emilia, so Emily and Amelia might be similar to someone who pronounce Amelia like Emilia.

Good point! So [name]Amelia[/name] would be pronouced like Eh-mi-lia? That’s how I read [name]Emilia[/name] in my head but I read [name]Amelia[/name] like Uh-meal-ee-a. That makes sense to think of them as more similar that way then.

[name]Amelia[/name] to me is- Uh-meel-ee-a
[name]Emilia[/name] would be- [name]Em[/name]-eel-ee-a
and [name]Emily[/name]'s like- [name]Em[/name]-uh-lee

So yes, they all sound pretty similar. If a person (especially a non-name nerd) liked one because of it’s similarity to the others without taking into account the origin, it would still make sense to me. I do think you’re right though… if the problem with the name [name]Emily[/name] was the popularity issue than using [name]Amelia[/name] instead wouldn’t solve that in my opinion as it is also very popular. I’m sure everyone has their favorite, just like any other similar sounding names. =]

I think even with classic names parents may be worried if it’s in the top 10 since nobody really wants their child to be [name]Emily[/name] J or anything. I don’t think an [name]Amelia[/name] and [name]Emily[/name] in one family is an issue. But in our family we have a lot of exact duplicate names. I share a name with my [name]SIL[/name] and my [name]SIL[/name]'s husband shares a name with my husband. Oh and my daughter is the fourth [name]Mary[/name] lastname currently living however she is the only person who really is just called [name]Mary[/name] since most either use their middle name with it, go by their middle name or everyone just calls them Grandma/Great-Grandma. But it works and really isn’t that confusing.

[name]Florence[/name] is lovely. Go for it!
As for me, me name is [name]Sierra[/name]. Pretty. Kind of common for my age group, but still distinctive. Only thing is, I never see my name on the mugs and keychains you see in stores. But that isn’t too bad. When I was little, I sometimes resented my name because you can’t make a non-ghetto nickname with it and because it was sort of uncommon in my school. I wanted a more common name. But mostly I like it. People compliment it. It has grown on me through the years. My sister’s name is [name]Jennifer[/name] [name]Olivia[/name] though. So common! But it fits her, so I guess it is fine :).

LOL… I love ranting sometimes. Feels great ;).

I am strange, I think. Because I am the only person I know that loves the name [name]Emily[/name], but cannot even kind of like [name]Emma[/name] or [name]Amelia[/name]. Intellectually I think it would make more sense if I liked all three or disliked all three, you know?

But I only like [name]Emily[/name].
