Thisbe

I’ve been really crushing on the name [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] for a while now, but im curious as to what other people think of it?

I think it’s lovely! I love the spelling and it has a very sweet, innocent sound. I think I would prefer it as a middle name though.

[name_m]How[/name_m] do you pronounce that?

Only if you have a son named [name_m]Pyramus[/name_m].

I love it. Its mythic background gives it all the romance and drama of names like [name_f]Isolde[/name_f] or [name_f]Eurydice[/name_f], but the name itself has a very spunky feel to it. I think Nameberry’s description for it is perfect: “lively and cute – in a slightly thistly, prickly way.”

I absolutely love [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] - it’s so interesting and lively, and “[name_f]Bee[/name_f]” is a cute potential nickname (for whoever asked about pronunciation, it’s THIZ-bee, pronounced like “Frisbee” except with a Th- instead of Fr-). But I go back and forth about whether it’s a viable name for a modern human, or a guilty pleasure/great dog name. My SO, who has an unusual name himself and favors them, likes it for a girl, so maybe we will end up using it!

I am afraid that being a huge fan of “A Midsummer [name_m]Night[/name_m]'s [name_u]Dream[/name_u]” by [name_m]William[/name_m] [name_m]Shakespeare[/name_m] means that every time I see the Name [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] on Nameberry I get the giggles, sorry, because of the hilarious Mechanics Play within a Play! But I am sure that I am in the minority!

I personally can’t say I like it, even though I love similar sounding names like [name_f]Phoebe[/name_f]. [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] just lacks a certain charm and appeal for me, though I am beginning to feel like I am in the minority here.

I don’t know what it is about [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] that sets me off of it, but I personally don’t like the name. To me it sounds a bit… Lisp-y. Sorry.

I adore [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]! One of my favorite girl names. I’m considering it as a middle for [name_f]Amalia[/name_f].

I love [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f]! I feel like it’s sort of off-limits for me, since it’s a part of Greek mythology (to my limited knowledge). While I may like some other names from other religions, I feel like it’s weird to profess to be a born-again [name_m]Christian[/name_m] (and proud of it!) and yet honor another religion above my own. I wouldn’t use [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f] just like I wouldn’t use [name_m]Bodhi[/name_m] or [name_m]Mohammad[/name_m]. I would love to meet a [name_f]Thisbe[/name_f], though.

It’s lovely and refreshing.

I am all for different names, and mythological names make some the best… but I can’t come at this one, sorry. All I can think is “rhymes with frisbee”. Also, it took me a while to get my head around the pronunciation. It sounds as it looks, but I think people might assume it is more complicated than it is, because it has such a unique pronunciation.
