Thomas and its origin?

Thomas is the Greek version of the Aramaic name Ta’oma. So would you say this name is Greek or is it Aramaic ??

The reason I ask is id love to use a Greek middle name and when I looked up Thomas some sources say it’s Greek and others Aramaic.

(I know there are plenty of other Greek names, so I don’t need a list of potential Greek names or anything, right now)

Just interested in berries thoughts regarding the origin.

I think Thomas is different enough from Ta’oma to be more Greek than Aramaic.
For example, you’d say that Erzsebet is Hungarian even though the origins of Elizabeth are Hebrew, because it’s an international variation of that original form.

I see it as a Greek name

[name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is a Greek name of Aramaic origin. That does not make it Aramaic.

It’s like if we take a look at the word “number”. It is originally from the Latin numerus and we came to use it via the Old [name_u]French[/name_u] nombre and then the Anglo-French noumbre. That does not make “number” a Latin or even a [name_u]French[/name_u] word.

Thanks I see what you are saying. So are you saying [name_m]Thomas[/name_m] is the Greek version of an Aramaic name? I guess that’s what I am asking.

A bit like [name_u]Elias[/name_u] and [name_u]Elijah[/name_u]? [name_u]Elias[/name_u] is the Greek but [name_u]Elijah[/name_u] is the Hebrew ?

I believe it is of Greek origin

It is a Greek form of an Aramaic name, yes. It is just like [name_u]Elias[/name_u] and [name_u]Elijah[/name_u].
